Taigen gear wear - normal?
 

Hi, I have a ~2 month old Taigen Panther F w/ a metal V2 steel gear box. After using it for about 45 minutes, I opened it to change the battery. I noticed there was a lot of metal shavings inside. 1 gear in particular(right side) seemed really worn down. The gears are originally black, but this 1 gear had all the black worn off. Is this normal? Will grease prevent more wear?

It looks as if the pinion is pressed a bit too hard against the gearbox. Try pressing straight downward on the motor on that side to relieve a bit of pressure. Please take care only to press down a bit! The color you see is the brass from the pinion gear.

You can loosen the motor screws and 're-seat' the gear with comfortable movement before tightning up.

You could also loosen the motor screws, then slide a piece of thin paper between the pinion and gear. Then tighten the motor screws and remove the paper by spinning the pinion gear. This will help in giving you a better mesh between the two gears. If the paper ends up giving too much space and the gears are not meshing fully you may want to look at the wall of the gearbox frame at the motor mount and see if its bent at all which would be "leaning" the motor and pinion into that gear.

They are replaceable, though you may need a gear puller to get it off and a vice to press fit another on.


I would use the one you have now, as damaging the motor shaft or armature by gear removal is likely.


Better to purchase a new motor and pinion already installed, not expensive at all.

That's what I thought. Hopefully I'll get some life out of it. The teeth are almost 20% worn.
