They offered me no solution or fix other than to suggest I change radios and that DID NOT work, because something else failed! The Tamiya Attack Radio System did work ALL the transmitter tank functions normally, for about a dozen cannon fires and then it didn't! I am 99.9% sure I have a faulty turret control unit and I think you do too! Please contact Gary at Tamiya America about your Abram's turret control unit problem. The gun firing shut down problem is fixed! I did not have the rear light harness hooked up to the “chassis control unit”. So, my fault, builder error, but no mention of that in the assembly and or ops instruction manual. Now we know though, LOL. Here's the big BUT, if you DO NOT have all the components hooked-up to the Chassis and turret control units the system will shut off when the main gun is fired, we believe this is a build-in safety feature. When we installed your systems into our runner tank and hooked up everything, both worked great. Once you complete the set-up in step 30 of the manual, I know it's tempting but do not fire the main gun. Both your systems are now set to your radio transmitter, all you need do is finish the kits, and do not fire the gun until everything is hooked up! Shad Tamiya USA actually replaced the Chassis Control Unit, but did not admit it, LOL. So, it is alive and well now, after a lengthy delay. |

The following tips assume your model is setup per both manuals, everything is plugged in and "all operates to spec", but now it doesn't, with the TBU & LED Emitter installed! 1. Issue. Fresh Battery Swaps with the Tamiya Battle Unit and LED Emitter plugged into the Turret Control Unit. Your Abrams now shuts down after firing the main gun. The work around FIX: The model is turned off. With the fresh charged battery connected, unplug the Tamiya battle unit receiver base and the LED Emitter from the Turret Control Unit and then correctly plug them both back in. This procedure will restore firing the main gun, without the resulting shut down. 2. Issue. The volume control at the Chassis Control Unit is turned up as loud as possible. When firing the main gun, the model shuts down. The work around FIX: Lower the volume slightly, until the model does not shut down after firing the main gun. 3. No clue as to why these two glitches occur, but at least there is a work around solution without out having to suffer through Tamiya USA's email nonsense! 4. The good news is the Abrams model, once RC setup, is a fine backyard runner and gives and takes hits nicely. Plus, it handles rough driving at the hands of both enthusiastic kids and clumsy adults; OK. Enjoy, John |
Well, everything works on the Abrams, except, I have had to dial back the turret rotation on my Airtronics radio. Anything above 50% on the channel setting the turret rotates non stop in the direction I signal and continues until the switch activates, the sound shuts down and the tank basically resets itself. It is an out of control rotation. Even at 50% if I firewall the stick in any direction it's rotation is out of control. I do have the Tamiya radio coming today, that should solve the issue, I can't understand why this is an issue though.

I experienced the same glitch using a Futaba Skysport 2.4 radio system. After switching to the Tamiya Attack 2.4 with the “updated” receiver that strange issue went away. What remained was the main gun firing, tank shutdown issue using the Tamiya Attack Radio. Besides NOT having the rear lights hooked up, my builder bad, the kit’s Chassis Control Unit was faulty. Tamiya USA emailed me an additional rc setup instruction, which is DO NOT fire the main gun until all components are hooked up! They stealthily replaced my Chassis Control Unit (the board in the hull), whatever, the Abrams works now. Tips: Read the “Idiosyncrasies post” above concerning fresh battery swaps, another and different tank shut down issue, LOL. Just when you think your all rc setup good, something new pops up. An easy fix though. I did alert the Tamiya USA tech about this issue, from first contact. They did not address the issue, at least not for my kits. Probably glitch information overload relative to their capabilities to deal with the known issues. Plus, the Tamiya supervisor was defensive and not willing to admit the Abrams electronics had issues and focused only on setup procedures and not firing the main gun until all components are plugged in and ready to go. Of course, that is really important, but not the whole story or fix if a board is bad! John |
Almost makes me wonder if they did any qc testing at all. Awful lot of bugs. Almost like Tamiya was in a mad rush to get the Abrams out by some hard deadline no matter what.

The Tamiya Abrams rc tank sound effects accuracy is Clark toy like wrong. Most glaring incorrect, especially the Abrams’ brass shell ejection sound effect. The Abrams M1A2 does not use brass shell casings :) Very poor technical research on Tamiya engineering’s part. I would hazard to guess Tamiya out sourced the Abrams electronics package to Clark and if so they are over charging big time for this low quality electronics package used in the Abrams modern rc tank kit. That hunch stated, I still enjoy both my rc Tamiya Abrams and a new favorite. John |
You could always buy a cheap henglong and build it yourself how you want. But you have already done that John. You should see mine in ludicris mode, its fast but not fast enough to jump. Need bigger motors! |
Well, at least the shell ejecting will be right for my M1 I'm going to make from my HL Abrams. I'm going to keep the Tamiya stock.

I have the HL Abrams converted to USMC M1A1. I have the DBRC4 and Benedini. Between the 2 the Tamiya just seems of higher quality overall (torsion suspension, metal arms, bearings, excellent recoil, awesome gearbox etc.) The HL has some issues also. The DBRC4 is very picky when it comes to power. I have a new battery in it even with this it has started to shut itself down after a few minutes of running. If I battle the HL I will need to add the back up battery pack for the board. Up side is DBRC4 plays the Marine Corps Hymn LOL. Overall the Tamy is just better.

Question, you did not fire the main gun until every rc set up task was completed? If so, I think your kit’s turret control unit and the chassis control unit are at fault and require replacement. Contact Tamiya USA and request replacements. Be prepared to send them both your units. Figured it out. It was the turret rotation limiter switch. I have never seen Tamiya use it before. I noticed that the runaway rotation started at either the 10 or 2 position during the rotation no matter how slow I rotated it. If it started at the 2 o'clock position it would run to the 10 o'clock position and visa versa. Double checked the plug in location, promptly shook my head and realize reading the other manual helps. I had plugged it into the wrong 2 pin location. Corrected! All is running perfect! This was not a Tamiya error but a builder error.
