Tamiya Tiger I 1/16 travel lock?
Hi,
I'm building a Tamiya Tiger I, and decided to modify it to a mid production model (with travel lock). I've been able to acquire most of the parts, although I'm still waiting for some to arrive. Haven't been able to track down a travel lock part though. Is there anywhere to purchase one? Thanks David |
The Tiger One travel lock was internal, but I have seen the pictures of external travel locks. The pictures I have seen it is just a rectangular piece of wood with a semi-circular notch at the top for the gun tube/barrel to rest on. The turret was rotated with the barrel towards the rear of the tank and then lowered onto the wooden piece.
It would be easy to make it out of a piece of balsa wood. Here is a pic I found. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...231645b679.jpg Steve |
Hi Steve,
Thanks ... I haven't seen that photo before. The mid production travel lock I'm looking for was for end of '43 to beginning of '44. And was discontinued starting on the late model with steel wheels. I'll attach a link of a photo. Tiger 331 of 101st SS Heavy Panzer Battalion https://www.worldwarphotos.info/gall...1-france-1944/ |
david,
Now that I look at the picture, I do recall seeing that travel lock. From the angle in the photo it looks similar to the travel lock the Tamiya Pershing tank used, you might be able to get one of those to fake it. I have never seen the Tiger version made in 1/16th scale but Schumo made the Pershing unit in metal. You may be able to find one of those. If you have a 3D printer you could print one or you might look on Shapeways and see if they have one you could buy. Here is a picture of the Schumo part for the Pershing you can see the similarity. ETO Armor used to stock these but they are out of stock. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...37f72c1aaa.jpg Steve |
I don't know how good the quality of this one is, but it's cheap and would at least give you a head start. https://www.ebay.com/itm/WWII-Wehrma...4AAOSwMHdXTKwL

I got the one from Ludwig’s. It’s not 100% accurate but with a little work it looks good. Sorry no photos right now.

I guess this is the best one available right now. Question: Does it come assembled? When/if possible ... load a photo to see how it looks after your tweaks? |

David if you do decide to buy the Travel Lock (Or anything else) from Chris you should remind him that you are resident in the USA ( I assume that you are ?) and not liable to the 19% Value added tax (VAT)that all EU based companies are forced to charge on sales within the European Union,
That saving will help to relieve some of the postal charges.:D |

I've bought from four online stores in Europe already, and purchased the Tiger I from USA ... I'm in Canada. One store has one or two parts, another store has several, next store has one part, etc ... lol :) Then realizing some of the parts bought aren't the best choice available ... a little bit of trial and error. In hindsight, it's all good though ... some of the delays gave me time to think things through a bit more. |

This is the Chris Ludwig travel lock. As you can see it’s not perfect but I think it’s good enough for my liking. I chose to display it in the open position, partly due to a glue mishap. But am satisfied with the outcome. The chain is from a necklace, I am going to make a small handle for the end of the chain. Cheers Mark |

I was planning to have it in the open (combat) position ... so this will work. Just sent an email to order one |
