Flakpanzer turret

HI Building a Flakpanzer Coelian turret with twin 37 mm cannons for a Panther. Can't do videos yet if anyone wants to look its here, you tube then search for Flakpanzer turret test 2
Bought a Takom 2 in 1 Flackpanzer 1/35 kit then made turret 1/16 scale in styrene. Looks like i need 10 or so posts before photos and links etc.

Sweet can't wait to see it! I'm a Panther fanboy and would love to get a flakpanzer coelian for battling with club members. After you finish yours would you be willing to do another one for me that would work on a tamiya panther? www.desertarmor.com

Hi Don't think i am a good enough builder for selling on. This is my first scratch build using styrene sheet . One problem is that it uses servos, Tamiya turret is usually motor / 2 wire for elevation and this does not have a normal recoil function . Recoil is just a continuous servo to imitate the fast flak recoil. I had a search for one before deciding to try and build one, found one selling in Germany for about 100 euro plus postage, can't remember if it was just the turret or fitted out with elevation and flak function. Some more posts and i will be able to show build.

That's okay. So what kind of electronics you gonna use?

Hi Using an Elmod fusion pro board, easy to setup functions and the app works on a mac. Sounds are ace and you can load custom ones onto the tanks.

Pnzjgr 12-03-2020 10:02 AM

That sounds (lol) great! Do you already have the el mod system?

Hi Have 4 in tanks , i like messing about with the settings . Just plug a usb cable in, no taking SD cards out or pressing buttons on a TV remote control. Burned out a servo port on an IBU board and tried the Elmod boards, another plus is the LEDs are protected against reverse polarity and no need to fit resistors.

Tankster 12-03-2020 01:15 PM

I definitely agree. Other than my radio, the awesome Elmod board is what maintains my high level of interest in this hobby.

Pnzjgr 12-03-2020 05:18 PM

What other four tanks do you have?

ronnie42 12-04-2020 03:16 AM

Now i have 10 posts i can show flak panzer build. Made a few mistakes , what do they say measure twice before cutting. Fixed with thin styrene and filler to even up each side, you can see them in the next post. Part one turret sides, cannon elevation and tubes for recoil, the little calculations are rounded down or up as this is not going to be a perfect model.

1/35 to 1/16 is 219% to make life easy used 220% , less than 1% out.

Hi Pnzjgr Sorry missed that post have 5, two Tamiya KTs early and late , Taigen Panther F , Tiger 1 mid and a Panther G Henglong all running Elmod boards bar the late Tamiya.

Pnzjgr 12-04-2020 10:59 PM

Wow! That is awesome so far, looks really good! Hope you're having fun doing it. Can't wait to see more.

Part 2 turret top and lining up the cannons, started some brass work and detail on roof. This is when you start to find some faults as it all comes together.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...fddcf14aaf.jpg
Beefed up cannon support tubes and lining up to glue in.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...ae04466da0.jpg
Brass for muzzle and the shaped part on elevation unit.

Muzzle and shaped barrel support made, trying to copy plastic kit part.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...df8441af1f.jpg
Styrene roof parts fitted and started detailHatches fitted .
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...f7dbd00eb9.jpg
Hatches fitted and rain guards made with thin brass rod. Will use BLUESTUFF to make a mould for the smoke/ grenade launcher.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...72bb4a7fd1.jpg
This part will be hard , should be thinking about buying a 3D printer.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...0ff99ef351.jpg
Styrene tubes spaced out and centre filled with epoxy then cleanup. Need to catch some parts that are not square or level before painting.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...83b771b319.jpg
Periscope covers in brass and some plastic coated wire for handles, may strip the plastic off if they look oversize before painting.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...39f7efc232.jpg
Rear hatch and some filler to tidy up some issues, primer always shows up issues.

ronnie42 12-06-2020 05:48 AM

Part 3 Tidied up roof and fitted a new flash switch, micro switch died when i reversed recoil servo. Using a leaf switch now as they are robust. Almost have the smooth styrene roughed up to look like rolled armour plate.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...7d872c94fa.jpg
Found a gearwheel same size as the elevation drum, made the elevation easy to fit. Continuous servo for recoil
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...55d4bd806b.jpg
Cut slots in muzzle brake , need a clean up.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...7266249993.jpg
Added round sprue to detail the bolts , need to buy some plastic bolt head kits

Hull red on forgot to fix some areas that are not square.
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...8daae0f41d.jpg
Dark yellow on the parts not needing fixed then filler and hull red again

Crius 12-06-2020 06:17 AM

Will both barrels recoil at the same time? I saw a project similar to this where the guy had used a cam mechanism so that the gun barrels recoiled alternatively. It looks really cool, I just wish I could find that now.

Hi Crius No they recoil in unison, found a video of twin 37mm flak and they fired at the same time. Wanted to do the alternate recoil but its a pain as the turret and elevation setup is tight. 2 servos off the same circuit and 180% offset on the servo horns would work but i don't have the space in the turret. Crius how easy is it to post up videos here?

ronnie42 12-06-2020 09:56 AM

Little video , elevation is on a slider and not as smooth as on a stick , need a longer sound file and adjust to sync with the flash

ronnie42 12-07-2020 05:31 AM

Started the camo, its going to be Ambush pattern with the dots or the late green and yellow. Going to try and replicate the interlocking plates , scribe the lines and paint / wash to give the impression. If i do any more will cut the styrene with the notches for the plates. As this is the first scratch build of a turret or hull not too bothered as i now know what is required for building with interlocking plates.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...f46fd32393.jpg
Will end up as one of these two camo patterns
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d2ea973fc9.jpg
Tamiya dark yellow 2 , light coats want some hull red showing thro in places. Some tape to mask off periscopes
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...eb0266b222.jpg
Tamiya dark green 2 , German grey for the barrels
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...dab155d8d7.jpg
Want to show the interlocking plates, if its a mess doing them at least can paint over again .
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...7ad1c4c60d.jpg
Rear green needs a touch up or just say its wear from in and out of the hatch.

ronnie42 12-07-2020 08:03 AM

Going to cut out the weld lines , a rub with a file will straighten the cuts out. Should tone down and blend in if i get the painting right.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...e698a045b2.jpg
Marked out started to make the interlocking .
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...d8939aca8a.jpg
First side almost done , need to look for a file thats the right shape.

ronnie42 12-07-2020 09:40 AM

Touched up the first side . No problems with the paint match . Much easier doing the other side as you have learned from the 1st .
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...1f9827a476.jpg
Some paint on to see how it looks, some more filing to smooth out the weld channels.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...99f9c93850.jpg
2nd side is better found a little file with a wider tip to clean up the cut marks.

ronnie42 12-08-2020 02:21 AM

Thats the sides done, painted up looks like just one of the weld lines to straighten. Should do the line on the angled plate to tie everything in.

That looks great, Ronnie. And what you said above is definitely true, you need a 3D printer. We all need a 3D printer. I'd be willing to bet that 30 years from now we'll all have one. Kind of the way it happened with computers, 30 years ago hardly anybody had a computer in their house, now we carry them in our pocket.

and if I can go off topic for just a second, anybody that's concerned about being chipped if you get the coronavirus vaccine, they don't need to chip you. We all have cell phones, and that's all the tracking the government needs. We take our little chip with us everywhere we go.

ronnie42 12-10-2020 09:53 AM

Tidied up the weld lines and added the numbers, a little issue with some paint under the mask . Once thats fixed some flat varnish to seal the paintwork, the yellow turned out well due to lots of light coats over the hull red
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...40748ed8dc.jpg
Don't like transfers as they never totally blend in.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...5a208fb77c.jpg
Numbers are off a little but did they measure when doing the real thing.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.rcu...58036b9d4c.jpg
Should do some light deck tan or buff passes with the airbrush to tone down the bright numbers.

MAUS45 12-10-2020 01:50 PM

Wow. great scratch build!!!
