Differences in tamiya sets?

I'm looking to make the plunge into the high-end tank scene. The Tamiya leopard is just plain out of my price range... was hoping the price would go down, but to no avail. And if that's too pricey, well, the 1/8 are just right out.

So It's pretty much in the air with the Pershing, tiger, king tiger, and sherman. Looking at prices, they vary quite a bit. Why is this? What are the differences(aside from the obvious) with these sets.

Also, I've seen two versions of the tiger. A DMD version is around at a significantly higher price point.

Thanks all.

Be careful of shipping prices!

Check the Tamiya website for full option kit numbers and make sure which ever you buy matches that number.

Of the two kits Tiger and Pershing. I dont own a tiger so will give advice if you buy a Pershing.

1. replace the stock motors with 480's (this goes for tiger as well)
2. buy Daryl Turners quick change gearbox plate
3. cut the speaker box down to provide more room in the hull (It is very tight)
(put a strip of plastic to keep the battery from running up against exposed gears)
4. use tape to bundle wires do not use cable ties.
5. buy the idler upgrade there are two types both cost less then 30.00

I am sure there are Tamiya Tiger 1 owners who can make recommendations on for those tanks
Which I would also like to hear.

James

with the four 'full option' tanks you mentioned, If you shop around, the Pershing, Tiger 1 and KT are all fairly similar in price. The Sherman is cheaper, partly due to the smaller size (I suppose) and also it does not have a recoiling gun like the other three.

Oh one other thing on the pershing . Cut off those tamiya power connectors and replace them with Deans .. this saves a lot of space and will help prevent turret rotation binding problems.

James

Boba,
Welcome. being your first tank, I would say Tiger1, good runner and lots of room inside.
as for cutting pershing speaker box, I do not like that idea at all. first it will need some work, second, it reduce the base of sound, so it does not sound that powerful any more.
I use charging system, so everything is just right inside. you do not have to open the tank anymore to charge the battery.
good luck,
tom

Tomzag, I'm definately emulating the internal charging you've done. And thanks for the rest of the info, all.

Right now, the tiger is looking pretty nice, I guess I'll start focusing some of my attention to the posts in here about that build.
