King Tiger Paint
 

Doing my research early...thinking of getting a KT. Are there any paint scheme pictures for solid color KTs? I don't want to mess up a camo scheme...my paint skills aren't that good. I figure a weathered solid color I can handle :)

I am not aware of any solid color schemes for the King Tiger model that Tamiya do as when they were produced during WWII the German army schemes were the various three tone ones. However there may be some I am not aware of and I will chck my books later.

It is not too difficult to do a camo job though as they were mainly hard edged schemes so could be done with brush. Alternatively paint the tank in a dark yellow colour and then mask of the bits you want to leave that color. You can use stuff like blue tak or silly putty to mask as it goes round curves and corners easily. Then spray the second color of green. mask off some more and then spray the brown. Once all is dry the masking can be peeled off to reveal your camo. An advantage of doing it this way is you can use spray cans rather than an airbrush if you wish as you do not have to be accurate like you do with freehand airbrushing.

Update

Just checked through my Panzer Colors books and found a King Tiger in overall sand yellow. It has multiple kill rings on the barrel in white and no numbers on the turret or unit markings. It is stated as being one from SS Panzer Abt 503 circa early 1945. It is a color drawing but these books are usually correct with their illustatrations so it is an option.

Also, some of the Porsche turret KTs were painted in overall sand yellow, some of these with a winter whitewash over that.

I have used the silly putty technique myself on 1:35 scale armour and it works well. It does not give a very hard edge as there is a bit of softness to it but it depends how hard you push the stuff onto the tank how soft the line is (worth experimenting on a piece of scrap if you are worried). It is actually blue tak I use as we do not get silly putty in the UK. As long as it is not plasticine or any other petroleum based putty it is ok though - play-doh also works but I hate the smell of it but used it so the kids could net get it to tread into the carpets and furniture [:@] it is all gone now though :D

What about a winter whitewash? You could attempt the camouflage (regardless of the results, good/bad) and paint a faded, peeling winter whitewash over it leaving some of the underlying camo to show through.

Now there's an idea! :D

After you are done with the camo, just thin the white and add layers until you are satisfied with the transparency.

Thanks Harq. It started out as quite a train wreck!

The pics are mixed up, but at first I was going to paint it in just Dark Yellow. After looking at more pictures, it was obvious that the one I wanted to model had camo underneath of a very weathered whitewash, so I added the camo. Then the whitewash. Then more whitewash, until it looked right. Along the way I took Testors dark earth and put it on the running gear and on the hull.
