Newbie given TANK!!!

I don't know much about tanks or rc but I have just been given one that does not work and would like to get it working.

It is a TAMIYA KING TIGER 1/16 (1981)

It seems in good condition but has a few loose wires and no main battery.

It is not designed to fire or change trajectory of the gun, it does have a strobe unit in the turret.

Anybody know the model number?

What voltage is the main battery?

Where can I find a wiring diagram?

main battery is a 7.2 volt 6 cell stick pack available from local model shop they may also be able to order instructions

Welcome to the forums m8 another UKer :D
There are a number of versions of the King Tiger in 1/16th scale that I can think of. There is the static version the Porsche Turret (#36201), there is the motorized version with the Henschel turret (#36204), and there is an RC version with the Henschel turret (#56018)

Alot of people here have the KT so im sure your answers will come shorty as you can see quite a few kt builds going on at the minute in forum :D
And as knowing a little about rc tanks to a newbie i would say the kt is probally the best tamiya kit in my view you lucky ***!!lol enjoy...[8D]

I have the KT with the old clutch system and strobe. I got it used w/radio years ago (on 9/11 in fact!). It's a solid tank, the only problems are the useless rear tensioner and clutch system.

RE: Newbie given TANK!!!

I fixed a couple of loose wires, installed 4 x AA batteries and all the servos work :D

It is the Henschel turret, it has one motor and a double clutch system.

Does this make it kit no. #56018 ?

How much would I expect to pay for the battery and charger?

CountChocula - Do you have any plans?

Thanks,

Mike

Hi 944,
I recommend that you restore your Tamiya tiger as close to original as possible. Some of these tanks are worth a bunch of money to model collectors, and just the original box that it came in is worth money. Consider getting a cheap battery pack and charger for testing the Tiger out, and if all is OK, try to get a Tamiya batt/charger so as to stay as original as possible. Search the net for a Tamiya owners manual and instructions. These models are only going up in value as time goes by.

After some time surfing I believe it to be a 56004, one of the first RC King Tigers.........Must do the lottery this week:)

Are these early models still 7.2 volts?

Will it work on 6v for a bench test?

Sorry for the delay, 944.

Yes, you have a 56004. It can be tested on 6 volts just fine, but make sure you only run the flash on 3 volts (the supplied 2x C cell clip, or suitable replacement) It is the first issue of the King Tiger with a Henschel turret, and all the other Tiger kits are based on this initial design with mods beeing done later for the others.

It CAN be converted to DMD gearboxes, but its not worth upgrading it to full MF operation due to separate component expenses. Does it have the clunky turret traverse gearbox in the middle of the chassis? If not, it can still be bought, item 53400 , about $40 bucks.

My first tank was a 56004, and had a few of them go through my hands in the over twenty years since then.

The only obvious suggestion I'd say is if you're going to use stock 7.2 packs in it, go get one of the integy 55 turn lathe motors (INT SCM 5501) and put that in place instead of the stock 540. It'll slow the tank down to almost perfect scale speed, and give you HUGE amounts of torque and climb ability.

Hope that helps.

Purchased 2 used batteries from ebay for £4.99. One battery was discharged but the the other had enough charge for a test.

It works!!!

....in a straight line, Turret also works.

On inspection the clutches are seized. I have manage to free them but one seems to drag.

I need to charge the battery and retest but I have no charger.

Will a 9v charger work for now?

Mike

dont think so you can get a fast charger that will charge the 7.2 in about 30 mins can be 12volt or mains or bothif 12volt they need a carbattery for power[&:]
