White Washed Tiger
 

I used an electric toothbrush and some white paint to gve my Tiger that white washed look. I went with something that represents a wash nearing the end of the season.

Windex strips acrylic paint in seconds, and this is how the wash was removed in places.

It looks really good, superb in fact.

Closely replicates the look of peeling, eroded paint very well especially those large areas on the barrel. This appears to be a great technique you've discovered. It looks random enough to be real. Not overdone.

If I understand correctly, you painted the whitewash with a regular brush and then removed some with the toothbrush (and Windex)?
Regular Windex or Windex w/ Ammonia, etc.?

I used a wide soft paint brush, and an electric tooth brush. The wide brush applied the paint, and the electric toothbrush moved it around. Windex on a paper towel then was used to remove random areas of paint after the paint had dried.

Great idea on the toothbrush and windex. I'll have to try that. Also really nice detailing and colors on the TC's machinegun. Tank and weathering are great and very realistic. You may want to flip the flag over that's laying on the grilles...the hackenkreuz is pointing backwards.

Well Uhu keeps coming up with more interesting things about Tigers and I keep running back to the workbench to add more.

Here are the lifting lugs that were used to pull the turret from the chassis. I simulated a complete one between the tool boxes. The last shot also shows the over all effect. This was accomplished using black eye shadow.(No smart comments, I have teenage girls at home and come by the stuff honestly)

The judges at home aren't so sure about the new finish. I had to explain this white wash was applied with a mop, and that is why you see brush strokes and such a rough finish. I think the Misses liked the cleaner weathered grey better. I guess I better buy another one for that:D

Tell me about it, Jose keeps me on my toes all right! Ive just started a T34 and I have a feeling a few suggestions are coming my way. Im thinking of doing the T34 in white wash (Kursk) actually so this thread help to give me some ideas.

One I just came up with, for a real natural looking wash effect, try painting on NEAT flat base, once dry it goes white and well, washy really.

I discoverd that accidentally on a model railroad project I was working on. Never thought to try it. I wouldn't mind seeing pictures when you get some.

The Windex discovery was another accident. I was working on the cannon in the Pershing and as a result the finish was very oily from my finger prints. There was a bottle of windex on my workbench and I thought that would work as good as anything. I sprayed the model, only to find the windex was immediately lifting the paint. I gently padded off the Windex and discovered a very believable peeling effect had occurred

I'm very impressed with the whitewash finish of your Tiger!. It looks awesome to me!. Your second pic showing a close up of the fog grenade launchers is incredible! reminds me of real Tiger pics, just photoshop it, make it B&W with a slight sepia tone and hop! a wartime Signal photo! (I have some "criticisms" about your Tiger, but your painting skills make me speechless (dumb?)...)

BTW I googled for Windex and it seems that is a glass-cleaner, imagine that any other brand should work...here we don't have this particular brand:)

Heres a quick piccy showing the effect that neat flat base gives, this was only a tester and its on the red ox primed T34 but still looks good. You can imagine that crewman slapping it on in hurry. I discovered it by accident too, I just mixed in too much one day nd when it dried of course the whole paint job which was supposed to be dark grey wash, went winter wash!

Don't worry about the criticisms. That is how a guy gets better. Remember I have only been modelling armour for about 3 months, and know very little about the prototypes, except from what I have learned from the fine people here. But like you said in another post, remember this is a Heng Long and I have no intention of doing major reconstruction. Your helpful little hints have helped me do easy things that are in the grasp of any modeler.

If it is something simple that doesn't involve a complete rebuilt, tell what isn't right, and I can work on correcting it. ( I know about the jack pad. On my Tiger it is a storage bin, but I will fix that soon.):D

The actual Battle of Kursk occured in July of 1943, so there wasn't any white washing of T34's during that conflict and the T34/85 was first introduced in 1944, totally missing that battle.

Antenna position. Although your turret suggest a command Tiger, that rear mounted antenna.....
Turret track links holders...see the pics.
Those strange grids on top of the engine air intakes (?).
(Kriegsflagge and other discussions not to mention, eheheeehh...)
Just suggestions, not necessary at all. Still astonished by your whitewash.:)
And now a pair of doubts of mine, is the MG a Solothurn or an MG 34? Were those Luftwaffe magazines ever used in Tigers?

Yes the track holders. I had fabricated them and added them, but when I fit in a VS cannon, I ended up breaking them off. I will rebuild them!!!!. I know about the flag, but I actually saw one flying from a Tiger. I have yet to find where on the web I stumbled onto it. I surmized perhaps the guy lost a brother in the submarine service or something.

The antenna. Oh well, next time I have to pull the turret apart, I'll think of moving it.

All good catches, and I will put them on the to do list!!!!!.

Ahhhh the machine gun. It came with a Century 21 infantry man. It was cheap, handy, and most people would never know.:D

Uhu, Where is the Tiger in the photos? Looks like an exit hole from an 76mm or 18 pouder HVAP. I have seen a few 85 and 90mm holes in M-46s and the holes are bigger that on that Tiger.

I was wondering that too. Looks like a late Tiger because of the turret guard on the deck.
