Hello everyone
I'm new to the RC Tank hobby but not to the RC Hobby I have a Heng Long Tiger and Bulldog and was looking at picking up a 1/8 scale Elite Armor Challenger 2, I was told this was the place to ask if these 1/8 tanks are worth the money or not. I've done some searching on the forum and found one or two past post about the 1/8 M1.

Man, you've got to have a large hobby room to store those tanks! :D

Hello and welcome.
Not really been here that long myself.
Have to say that this is one of if not the most friendliest and helpfull forums about tanks.
Not seen much on here about the larger scales so far so the more who join up with them the better.
There is a forum in the UK (not sure if I'm allowed to say on here which one) that mainly has members with 1/8 and 1/6 scale tanks.

One thing I think everone likes (including me) on this forum is pictures of your tanks.If you do get a Chally2 be sure to show us.

Welcome aboard. I'm pretty new myself, and I find these RC tanks to be very addicting. You started out with two, but in a month or two you will find yourself with at least four with no room to store them. The most popular scale is 1/16, and that scale has the most selections to choose from. I rarely see 1/8 tanks.

Welcome aboard. Yes they are addictive. I have a T-34 on the way and a Panzer III. My friend just received his Pershing a couple of days ago and he is enjoying it. I currently own 2 HL TANKS a Tiger and a Panther and I am enjoying them. I find I want to get a JAGPANTHER, a King Tiger and a Walker Bulldog for my collection of RC tanks so far.

I got my first Heng Long Tiger in 2004, it's one of the very first one they put out, at the moment it's being refitted .....I found Moto....need I say more :D

Addiction, I agree the Tiger blew its board about two days after I got it and it's been on display duty, I decided to try again and picked up a Bulldog through hobbytron, I had to put it back together again after the Jim Carry delivery goon kicked it off the truck :eek: It runs great, I plan to collect all the Heng Long line can't, beat that price.

I believe replacement boards are back in stock, at least the last time I checked a couple of days ago.

For information abou 1/8 or 1/6, you should look up a member on this forum called "DAP". I am his friend, and have seen his tanks in person, which are impressive. He has the tanks and experience which you seek. He has a 1/6 Tiger 1, a 1/8 M1A1 among others. He also is doing 1/16 scale. If you check the thread entitled "Tank Photo Gallery" above in this forum, you can see his stuff, as he has pictures on there. He should be a great source of information on these large scale tanks. If you PM him, I am sure he'd help and give some advice.

Welcome to the forum! I have a 1/8 King Tiger from RC Armory (photos are with winter camo). [link]http://www.rcarmory.com[/link] There are only a few others in the forum with the larger scale tanks.

My investment in the 1/8 KT was around $2500. There are additional options but it max's out with shipping to under $3000. The tracks, drive sprockets, and idler wheels are metal. The hull and turret consist of a PVC type material (designed with strength yet lighter than metal). It uses two 12V batteries, a Vantec ESC, two industrial motors with chain drive, etc. Very well engineered and built. Check out rcarmory's web site for details.

I've had nothing but fun with it.

There is the 1/6 scale M5 Stuart that you can find on eBay for around $125. It has good potential but needs upgrades to its ESC and other components -- lots of forum discussions on how to do this. The biggest difference is that most parts are plastic (relatively thin but OK if you don't bash it around too much). I also have a Stuart but it doesn't compare to the 1/8 KT in quality.

Other large scale tanks are available, and very good ones, such as, the Armortek products. These are built by our British friends, who do outstanding work with its engineering and manufacturing (from what I've read and discussed with others who own them). However, they are relatively expensive -- somewhere around $7500 for a 1/6 scale Tiger I shipped to the US. Also, see Model Works (also British) -- they make what appears to be a very nice steel and brass Tiger 1. There is also the Russian made 1/6, 1/8, and 1/4 scale tanks -- they rely on fiberglass hulls and turrets but everything else is cast metals, which may be OK.

It all depends on how much you're willing to invest. (Or, like me, can sneak it past she-who-must-be-obeyed.)

Handling these beasts is another consideration. My 1/8 KT weighs around 65 lbs, which isn't too bad. I've constructed a ramp and work trolley, and just take it very slow when maneuvering onto/off of the trolley.

Once you're hooked, it doesn't matter which scale you have, it becomes a very interesting and fun hobby.

Hey navspook great King Tiger how does she do in the snow?

I've looked at RC Armory, they do have great prices and are comming out with a 1/8 Sherman M1A1, yo yo got have one of those! I like the style of modern armor as well and I like 1/8 because of the transport problems that come with 1/6 before tanks I was a Rock Crawler... still am, but a change of direction took place with me getting this bulldog it's the sound thats in sync with the movement thats got me hooked. Money well like any hobby I always soak way more into a project than it's worth ($250.-$350. for a truck and $1200 for the upgrades) but it's worth it to me when I finish the task with a perfect creation...well perfect to me:D to go 1/8 is a costly process but like the wife, the hobby dictates:eek:

The 1/8 KT does well in snow so long as you allow it to cold soak outside for about an hour. Otherwise, snow melts and freezes again in the idler wheels and the tracks guides slip. See photo.

I live in Westcliffe, CO (hey, only a couple of hours from La Junta!) so we get our share of snow, esp this past winter.

I didn't know RC Armory is coming out with a 1/8 Sherman -- something I would consider. They're also working on a 1/6 StugIII -- probably something not too large to manage. I think Mike D. of RCA told me he was shooting for late summer 2007.

Another forum member, Trevor, just ordered a 1/8 KT from RCA. He would be a good source for information on his experiences as he builds one.
