21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

Well I decided today/yesterday that I will get this 1/2 track going. I got the Tamiya "tracked vehicle chassis kit" (the orange wheel, rubber belt and runs on 2 AA battery thing) and I plan to get the gearbox online and another mato S&S set and wire it up that way. I don't really want to make the front wheels steer at the moment so I think a mato kit will work fine.

Hey mate -- could you, or someone else that has one of these opened up measure the width of where the gearbox sits -- I've seen that conversion (to 251/9) but I just wanna know the width-dimensions of where the gearbox sits...

Here is a few photos, hope they help. These show the 21st Century Panzer IV drive installed. The distance between the two "rails" on the bottom is 1 15/16" or 49 mm.

The half track mods were all done by Merle (Bullyhys)

Hope this helps

Someone had a thread on a while ago, and also on a german site, using a 1;25 scale RC Panther for the half track suspension that seemed to fit pretty well and eliminated a lot of scratch making, track cutting & refitting etc. . It was a wire controlled tank but apparently easy to convert to RC.

RE: 21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

I was thinking of doing something similar as I have 3, and lots of Academy and Tamiya 1/25 spares laying about, plenty of gearboxes. It'd probably be larger than 1/16 by the time I was finished...

But these are the exact kind of thoughts I'm trying to avoid so close to Christmas, money is elsewhere and I dont want projects to side-track me, I've got enough on my plate :)

Where can you buy one of these halftracks? Any dealers in Canada? Maybe Wallymart?

the "Stuka zu Fuss" is a neat half track. I have mine set up to fire Estes C rockets. Simply insert a brass tube into the rear laucher boxes and the blast won't effect the plastic. Pick up some small nose cones and glue them onto the rocket motors, otherwise, the rockets will fly everywhere and scare the pants off people. A bit of work getting the wire strung, half track positioned and rockets loaded but a great crowd pleaser.

Yeah, the Rocket Launcher version. :D

"The Wurfrahmen 40 (literally "Launch Frame 40") was a German World War II multiple rocket launcher. It combined the SdKfz 251 halftrack with rocket artillery to form a more mobile, hardened artillery piece than the Nebelwerfer. It was nicknamed Stuka zu Fuss ("Stuka on Foot" or "Walking Stuka") and "Bellowing Cow".

Thanks Kevin,

Guys here is the mark to attain, to date I have successifully made 4 such conversions 2 belong to my family, 1 belongs to KSOC, and the most recent which is nearing compleation is going to a member of Texas Armor.

3 of these 251s are Pakwagons and Kevin at our last conversation is still undecided as to which version for his. All 4 units have steering front wheels and track steering(or if you like track brakes)
All 3 Pakwagons have movable AT-gun and Tamiya compatible combat systems via Tankhobby.

Happy New Year

Okay!! been working more on it and I got the dremel tool back from my dad...

anyhow i had to trim off the stuff sticking out of the sides of the gear box and had to mount it in the higher speed setting... anyhow pics:

Gear box - had to shave the circle parts, trim the middle shaft and trim off the fastener tabs on the bottom.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture049.jpg

Had to remove the floor section. popped out okay
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture051.jpg

Inside the body - had to trim out the front humps you see along the inside. they didnt actually hold anything...
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture050.jpg

Got the gearbox in there okay. it was a bit tricky! had to put the final gears that go on the wheel pegs in the casing then turn upside down then put it in place and put the pegs in!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture054.jpg

got the wheel on. looks right right?
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture055.jpg

Nope, sticks out too far. more trimming to come!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...Picture056.jpg

for the peg holes i heated up the allen wrench that comes with for the set screws then just poked them through the plastic where the holes for the existing drive wheels were. then reamed out with a screwdriver and all was good

Stuff could you make a complete list of the gearboxes and such that you use in your project? I have 2 of these halftracks that i want to RC.

RE: 21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

I used the tamiya twin gear box. output C (you will know when you get it) and wheels from the tracked vehicle kit. gonna use a mate S&S upgrade kit to make it rc. not gonna make the steering work though. first time thing.

Anyone done this to the new US halftrack?

RE: 21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

US halftracks like Trumpeters M16 AA will be harder because of the drivetrain design. Do-able yes, and I'm sure someone will do one soon :)

You know you could use the turret motor and control to make the steering work using a standard Heng long set-up. You would need to use both joysticks, but it is doable.

RE: 21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

or find a cheap rc car to get the steering gear from, even a broken one -- usually the steering survives :)

The_Stuff 12-31-2007 10:15 AM

RE: 21st Century 1:18 1/2 Track

I could use the turret motor controls yes, but then how would i control a custom turret for it :P

thinking of cannibalizing the turret out of the parts LAV thing i have.

on a side note, i trimmed some of the back spacing on the gear wheels, bout 1/2 a cm of each and they now line up well. (think that is 3/8 of an inch)

also instead of ripping out the rear axle like every other person has done, I am planning on making an insert to go around the rear axle that will hold onto the track and that way I wont wreck anything trying to pry it apart :P wish me luck!!

was at LHS today and found this kit for 18 bucks. was something that someone just never put together. I know it is a smaller scale, but it fits on top of my 1/2 track. I am thinking of just cutting off behind the main gun part and trimming it to fit. Also thinking of doing it as something russian captured. Also kit will provide me with lots of cool parts like hand rails and so forth.

what do you guys think?
