T-66 Tracks

Is is ridiculous for a Sherman with the 105 Howitzer to have T-66 tracks? I don't want to build a Firefly, but I like the tracks. [&:]

RE: T-66 Tracks

I don't think the T-66 tracks ever came on the M4 105mm, but it can't look any weirder than sticking a longer barrel into the 105's M52 gun mount.

If you like 'em, put them on! :D

build a Pershing or Super Pershing and use the T-71's. They are sweet.

say they had to replace tracks and due to war conditions, selection was limited

RE: T-66 Tracks

After I read this posting it got me curious about T66 tracks on 105 Shermans so I started digging thru all the reference books I have.

In "Sherman: A History of the American Medium Tank" by R.P. Hunnicutt there's a couple of references to T66 tracks on these models. In the back of the book there are pages with nothing but detailed specs on each different model of Sherman. On page 547, the entire page is for "MEDIUM TANK M4A3(105) HVSS". There is listed: 'Tracks: Center Guide; T66, T80, and T84'. Earlier in this thick book, on page 271, is line drawings showing view from the side, top, front, and back of "Medium Tank M4(105) HVSS" and it is the EXACT picture of the Tamiya R/C Sherman except it has T66 tracks. And there are numerous pictures of Shermans with T66 tracks; a couple of dark pictures that show these tracks installed on a Sherman in the factory and it is hard to make out the gun mantle but it looks a LOT like a 105.

I'm been planning on ordering a set of T66 tracks for one of my Shermans so I can find out IF I like metal tracks. I feel comfortable that T66 tracks ARE correct for 105 Shermans.

Thanks! Mike (Old MSgt)

I'm far from being a rivet counter, but if I liked them I'd put them on! :D They just weren't standard issue but I have seen plenty of 'project' Shermans and prototypes so it wouldn't be that much of a stretch.

:DIf it looks cool do it. Worrying about ALL the details sometimes can take the fun out of the hobby

Most HVSS Shermans had those early tracks in the ETO, very few had the ones we see on the model.

Thank you Old MSgt. and everyone else for the comments. [sm=thumbs_up.gif] It certainly sounds like reliable information, so the T-66 tracks are what I will go with. Now, the only question is, will they work properly with the standard Sherman sprockets? [sm=50_50.gif]

RE: T-66 Tracks

hi, if you were a rivet counter, the Tamiya's stock M4 sprocket wheel is for T84 tracks. The T66 tracks' sprocket wheels are slightly different.
Else, it doesn't really matters.

T66 comes in two variants (as what I know), with (like IMPACT's) and without (like KK's) the intergral grousers.

If you had the books on M4 Sherman variants, you should be able to tell quite easily.

RE: T-66 Tracks

That's true, but the T-66 tracks that Impact makes is the early type sprocket. The choice is yours. The Kenny Kong T-66 tracks will fit the Tamiya sprockets. I have them.

The later T-66 tracks used on Shermans (like the M4A1E8) utilized the sprocket that exists now in the Tamiya kit.
