why tamiya

ok i have seen HL and Tamiya on here and it seems to me that HL comes with more features so why choose a Tamiya since that cost a lot more what makes tamiya so special

RE: why tamiya

Ummm, it's the other way around. Tamiya has more features.

This isn't going to be one of those Tamiya VS Hen Long threads, is it?

RE: why tamiya

ok so i was wrong on that but do tamiya shoot bb's

RE: why tamiya

The Tamiya tanks are more robust model kits that must be assembled. Their suspensions act and work just like the real tanks for the most part. While they don't shoot bbs or smoke, they have superior sounds, the barrel recoils and a laser tag system is available for competing with your buddies. Spend some time perusing the forum and you'll see why so many like the Tamiya tanks. Each brand caters to a different segment of the hobby and this place (RCU) is where they merge. Plenty of guys own both and like them both. Each has their ups and downs.

Boy I really hate to see another Henlong Vs Tamiya thing get started. Needless to say both brands have things the other does not! I agee with Swathdiver. But in the end i'ts your decision as to what you buy. Just thumb through the posts and make up your mind! Get back to us with your questions. I own both.

I believe that if you have the resources and time....
PLEASE purchase a TAMIYA Full FUnction and also a HenLong...
Then after running the tanks YOU DECIDE why....
Only after owning both will you truly understand the difference! BUT>>>> I like them all.... I would use a HENLONG SturmTiger or rare Bulldog and Kit bash it to full function for use in our IR BATTLES!!!

I have many friends wonder WHY a TOYOTA??? or WHY not a Brand X...

THEN THEY BUY A TOYOTA and WONDER NO LONGER...

No the TAMIYAS are NOT PERFECT and neither are the HenLong Tanks either and each have their own Pros and Cons...
ALL COMES DOWN TO CONSUMER CHOICE and what you are looking for in a Model... Historical Accuracy, ACCURATE SOUNDS, Realistic Movements, realistic and robust suspensions, etc... WHAT LEVEL OF ACTION/REALISM do you want
and Do you even care if you can have the IR Battle Experience...

I have owned WSN, HEN LONG, TAMIYA etc... Nothing comes close to a TAMIYA in terms of accuracy, sound etc...... Buy one, RUN one and you will see why so many are stuffing the TAMIYA running gear into WSN, HENLONG and other tanks to get the running sounds, actions and BattleExperience...

Hen Long are great to run and so are Tamiyas... Buy what you like and Run what you like.... ALL ARE WELCOME TO RUN AT OUR EVENTS.. Just need to add a Tamiya Compatible BATTLE UNIT/SYSTEM...

I have a Halftrack from 21st Century being built for me right now with tamiya Halftrack running gear, and TANKHOBBY Tamiya Compatible Sensors... I will run it in our Battles AGAINST the Tamiya Tanks...

I also have a Member in our club that used a WSN Tank converted to full function with Tamiya Pershing running gear...
Works great....

So you can take a HL full function if you really want to in the future... It just may cost you to get all the internals out of a full function kit...

Yes.... THEY all have their Pros and Cons... TO EACH HIS OWN... I like them all....

RE: why tamiya

I own one of each. A H/L Panzer III and a Tamiya Sherman and I suppose you get what you pay for. Let's face it, you don't get Range Rover features for Ford Focus money do you.Having said that I like the PZIII out of the box. It will take some money to upgrade it to the level of a Tamiya Sherman, but there again you get an awful lot for your money with a H/L. However, that's not to say that the Sherman doesn't need improvement either. But the fact of the matter is ,basic Kit quality, sounds and mechanics are far superior with the Tamiya. They have to be, that's why they cost more and it's all about value for money. I can only assume that initially H/L are causing Tamiya a big headache in respect of sales/business in the short term. However, I also think that H/L have brought many more people into the R/C Tank hobby than Tamiya could ever have done and many of these people could well buy Tamiya products in the future. This will help us all as it gives Tamiya the funding to develop new and exciting models.

Have a Spectacular 2008

The Tamiya is a superior package, hence you pay more. The Gear train, suspension systems, sound quality, etc are better.

HL is a great value for the money. Where else can you get a 1/16 scale tank and radio for a $100. The price is unbelivable. This combined with all the after market stuff that is now available makes them fun in the long run as well.

There you have it in a nutshell. Two great sources of tanks. Those that ignore the other are missing out IMO.

RE: why tamiya

my dad has a late model Tiger by Tamiya and i have to say [X(] the weight is a stunner, like picking up bunch of house bricks. The suspension floats, plenty of sag and travel, Heng long even with metal upgrades still rides high with no sag.

Tamiya is the Porsche of the tank model world simple as, Heng long is the VW that you can add the body kits to make it look like a Porsche .

Poor mans hobby or rich mans, HL and Tamiya suit both pockets and leave nobody out of the hobby.

RE: why tamiya

Pricing keeps me away from Tamiya (especially multiple), and for the added features I get for much less money, I'll keep heading back for more HL/WSN in the near future :D

Sure, I've never said Tamiya is bad or worse, sure they have quality components -- but to me, and others, the difference just isn't worth 8-12x the price... to those with the money yeah sure, go for it.

RE: why tamiya

I would buy a Hen Long over a Tamiya due to the pricing and the fact the HL plastic is much stronger from what I have seen.

If you want a model buy a Tamiya
If you want something to beat to death..buy a HL!

RE: why tamiya

All depends on where your priorities are. I own one Tamiya FO tank, and three of their 1:14 tractor-trailer kits with MFCU's, aluminum wheels, trailer light kits, etc. At least a few thousand bucks invested. I'm single, no dependants, good job, no debts, so I have some discretionary income. Regrets? Nope...not a chance! Some people think I'm nuts, but I love Tamiya quality.

If you can afford the price, buy Tamiya.

Toyota???

Why own that piece of crap??

I'll buy a DODGE over a Toyota any day of the week!

same as I would buy a Hen Long over a Tamiya due to the pricing and the fact the HL plastic is much stronger from what I have seen.

If you want a model buy a Tamiya
If you want something to beat to death..buy a HL!
same goes with cars..
I have a 1988 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z w/ 275k on the clock.. no rust.
have you seen a Toyota like that?
Nope...and you never will.

This is a joke right? Comparing dodge and toyota... which universe do you live in.

Have you seen dodge daytona lately? No? Why not..? Cause they all rusted out and died on the way to the junkyard.

But i see plenty old corollas and camrys, some from that era as well.

RE: why tamiya

okay simply put.
-Tamiya uses hobby grade electronics
-It is more like a metal kit you put together yourself instead of a resin molded shell like HL's etc.
-Detail is just downright amazing
-YOU put it together from a box of pieces and screws. all the way from road wheels to deck details to the turret top.
-They are full metal!

only downfall is that they are only as good as you build them. you cut corners, it will be not as good as if you do everything just right. its like a painting, better you care about it the better it will look!

No.... they're not.

In fact with a certain modern Tamiya you get more plastic than ever. The older kits had lots of metal, but NO TAMIYA is "all-metal".

RE: why tamiya

Other then tub, the rest of the Tamiya's are plastic. (the Sherman anyway). Biggest thing is the Electronics. That is what you are paying for.
