graupner speed 400's

hi guys.recently bought a couple of white capped motors ready to install in my tiger (bought with every concievable extra but black capped motors in it..[:-]?)..i'm after a bit more torque/power but have read a couple of old posts recently mentioning the SPEED 400's..post was by swathdiver i think, who i'm hoping will be along shortly to confirm..!;)
are the graupner speed 400's gonna give me more torque or just increase the speed..? don't really wanna swap gearboxs or anything, just the motors..? as i say, i have the white-caps ready to go in but not sure which would be best to go with..???
cheers guys..rgds stuart..:)
p.s. i have a cooling fan blowing across board and a bigger heat sink so should be ok there..;)[:@]:D

Iknow for a fact that Permax speed 400s give you more torque but a little bit less speed, not sure if its the same motor as the graupner 400

RE: graupner speed 400's

those permax motors arent for sale in the usa anymore, tower hobbies discontinued them a year or so ago.

the speed 400s if you look at my motor post from last year, turn more rpms then the the black capped suntechs and of course the white capped ones. i don't have a dyno, never ran them in a tiger hull, but in a pershing and in the walker bulldog, the tank flys and pulls like a truck.

tigers run close to scale speed with the white motors with metal tracks. if you want even more torque you're looking for gearing that no motor can deliver. the new asiatam gearboxes coupled with speed400s will give you a little more speed with tons more torque.

thanks for replys guys..:D
so to confirm, is it worth getting the graupners or the permax as i can get both for about a tenner ($20) a pair here in the uk..?
not planning on new gear boxes just yet and could put new motors in the bulldog instead of the tiger or is there no real point compared to white capped motors.?

Permax 400, 7.2V Motor Details Speed 400

• Length of can: 48mm (1.9") 37.8mm
• Length to shaft end: 53mm (2.1")
• Diameter: 29mm (1.1") 27.7mm
• Shaft Diameter: 2.3mm 2.3mm
• Nominal Voltage: 7.2V 7.2V
• No-load speed: 17,400 RPM 16,400 21500 @ 8.4v
• No-load current: 0.7A 0.5A
• Maximum current: 8.0A 7.0A
• Speed at max efficiency: 14800 RPM 12600 RPM 15400 @ 8.4v
• Current at max efficiency: 3.5A 3.3A
• Typical operating voltage: 5-8V 3.6v-8.4v
• Weight: 73g (2.6oz) 73g

have to go but you need to look for how much thrust or torque they make, permax is long can motor.

many thanks for your help swathy (you and swathdiver one & the same..???!) will probably go for the graupners and see how they run in tiger or maybe the bulldog...;)

RE: graupner speed 400's

the same, swathy is my away from home id. i think the graupner motors are safer to use with the hl electronics.

RE: graupner speed 400's

I think I made a mistake here, the permax I put into my Pershing should be a permax 480(long can) and not the 400s, which are of lower RPMs but increase torque. I need to go home to check my tank again to confirm. Will post or edit this post by tomorrow. Sorry about the confusing.

To get more torque (on a HEAVY Tamiya King Tiger with metal tracks that was using the HL gear boxes and white capped motors) I just replaced the pinion gear from the stock 10 tooth grear to an 8 tooth gear. It definitely made a difference (20% more torque and 20% less speed)

RE: graupner speed 400's

Hi thomasjohnmurphy, when you replaced teh pinons to 8T, how is teh meshing of the gears or is the motor mounting points slot like, like in 1.10 cars when we need to re gear the car but still be able to get good meshing. Thanks

RE: graupner speed 400's

I had to drill out the motor mount hole (where the motor fits into the gear box) and one of the screw holes (the screw that secures the motor to the gear box) With a little adjuctment it worked great. Just make sure if you get an 8 point gears its at least close to the size of the 10 point (you can get them on ebay)
