hi
heres a youth tube 1/16 scale sherman on a scratch builded landing craft i been in touch with the guy from german he is going to send me some pictures so ill post them when i get them as for plans i got a 1/72 scale model of a ww-11 landing craft and go to blow it up to 1/16 scale atfer i do some drawings i think the % is 450% as 1/72 divded by 1/16 is 4.5 x 100%=450% right ? anyone knowing how to scale up please leave feed back on this, and this is why heng-long should do a 1/16 scale sherman if a lot of people ask for it they should come throught ,remenber the squeeky wheel get the oil, thanks rye

Here is a pics of another fully operational landing craft scratch built by BAT & SCAT member Ron Bairs father. Sorry dont have any pics of it in the water, although I have seen it operate a few times at the AMA Show pool.

Thanks for sharing! After I get a Sherman I was thinking of doing the same thing but sized for a Pershing or 2!

Here are some more picts of the landing craft. If I recall correctly, the rear tank is static and used to hide the boat's battery.

The landing craft in the video is ostensibly an LCM-3 (Landing Craft, Mechanized). The LCM-3s were able to hold one tank but were not meant for open ocean or long distance transport as the weight of the Sherman was prohibitive for such crossings.

The photos are probably of the larger LCM-6 but that was essentially the same craft but extended by 6 feet amidships. No WWII LCMs or any of this class were able to carry more than one tank.

Interesting and a great concept which took a lot of nice RC work, but an LCI would never be able to carry two Shermans and the ramp is not eased down to attract fire....it drops down and slams into the sand in a second so the troops can un-ass it quick. [&:].

Its very simple to scale up any decent plan - I'm using a 1/192 paper model to build a 1/72 CSS Tennessee ironclad. All I did was scan them at high res & then sized them up in AutoCAD. IF you don't know CAD, take the plans to Kinkos with some key dimensions so they can do it. AUTOCAD is far more accurate than simply blowing up on a copier.

Here are a couple sites for scale conversions:

http://www.mksmc.co.uk/hintsandtips/scales.htm
http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/fgmodels/scale/scale.htm

Do yourself a favor & spend a few bucks on a 1/35 kit for reference. I found the Trumpeter kit last weekend at my LHS for $12 but that won't help you in the States.

A good place for low cost plans is eBay [link=http://myworld.ebay.com/davesdrydock/]Dave's DryDock[/link]

A member of my 1/144 scale model warship combat club built an operational LST in 2005. He used it in the extra long Campaign Battle to clinch an Allied victory. I have a few photos of it at a maneuvering event. He has converted the micro tank to a Sherman, but hasn't used it in combat since, so I don't have any further photos. Someone in the 1/72 scale combat club built a Japanese landing craft and was able to land a tiger and a converted Japanese tank, but I don't know where the links are.

The tank to be delivered. It has since been converted to a Sherman, but I don't have any new photos.

The LST had to sail through a convoy route to reach the landing beach. Friendly battleships bombarded the shore defense guns and military installations.

LST doors open and ramp drops down at a maneuvering event. The basic mission was to deliver the tank to the beach.

The tank comes out to play at a maneuvering event. It had to advance a certain distance up the beach to score bonus points, but struggled with the occasional pebble.

I have uploaded a high-quality paper model of the LCM-3 in 1/25 scale, for anyone attempting to scratchbuild one.

[link=http://www.sendspace.com/file/dcefo9]http://www.sendspace.com/file/dcefo9[/link]

Down the page a little click on "[Papermodels@emule] [GPM 215] - LCM-3.pdf" to start the download immediately (you don't need install the wizard)

I have over 350 paper models covering land, sea and air... you need, just ask :D

Rob, Where did you get the little mini tank? I' planning to do a Jap tankette and the track-suspension is about right to save a lort of work. How long is it?

RE: 1/16 sherman on landing craft

That tank is literally 2-4" long...

kotori 06-11-2008 06:07 PM

RE: 1/16 sherman on landing craft

Suspension? What suspension? The road wheels are fixed to the hull. It was only a couple inches long, though I don't have the exact info on me. I'll have to ask Rob for more detail on the tank and where he got it. There used to be a whole bunch of micro tanks available.

Since you're talking LST now, here's Umi's excellent Japanese [link=http://groups.msn.com/ModelersAndHobbyForum/japaneset103lstbuildup.msnw?Page=1]1/72 T103 LST[/link].

You'll find photos & information on Rob's LST in the same forum. Both are avid RC ship combat fans & you'll find Umi over in the RCU boat forums. Am sure you'd be happy to assist with any questions.

Yea, thought you'd like that. Its even equipped with working cannon for RC combat. Lets see who has the gumption to build one of these in large scale.

Personally, a 1/25 LCM would be a nice size & fit in well with the Bronkater I'll build, especially with the new VS Sherman due next year.

What a fabulous bit of kit.

My late Uncle Lesley was an LCM commander on D-Day.He was 21 years old and a sub lieutenant in the Royal Marines on that historic day.

Back in 1994 for the D-Day 50th Anniversary I used a 1/35th Tamiya Sherman, having bought the old Airfix LCM III kit to scale up from, and scratch built a 1/35th scale LCM III/Sherman diorama for him.

It wouldn't be that hard, really. The designs of most landing craft have no major compound curves and are mostly constructed of flat pieces of welded steel which could be replicated in either sheet styrene or balsa.

The landing craft I'd rather attempt making is an LCVP in 1/16 scale. I'd need a 1/16 RC Willys MB or Ford GPA to be its cargo though.

Makes me wish I had a big garden with a pond.

It'll get sunk with bricks if I took one of those on any water near me.
