Half Track Build

hey everybody, i have had this fun idea that i might somehow get an RC 1/16 scale halftrack with atrillery gun, and fit it with a DBC/DBU system! i was wondering if anybody has attemped this before, and has any GOOD suggestions to offer! cheers!

Hey Matdragon,

Check out this thread, Merle has built 3 now using different IR battle systems, he makes it look easy but it is a lot of work!

Here are two pictures of my 2yr old prototype with the latest track upgrade.
In my opinion to date this is the best track setup I have been able to do.
I cannot get the tracks to come off regardless of the kind of driving I do, at least not so far.
For those who have not been following or are new, my 251 uses both front wheel and track steering, and is Tamiya battle compatible.
With the link track addition I think one may be able to get away from the dual gear box arrangement and go with single motor gearbox.
It won't do super tight turns, but normal truck type of turns seem to go very well; tighter turns are accomplished by using both front wheels and tracks together.
anyway enjoy.

bullyhys: obviously panzer 3 tracks, did you have to mod the drive wheel much?

Hi Stuff,

Yeah they are Panzer3 plastic tracks( the metal tracks are not flexable enough, can't make the curve aroune the drive sprocket.)
As for mods I used the same style as the T34 track drive setup.
Here is a picture.

I thinks thats a bit too complicated for me! :) but has anybody ever considered building static gun points, like a bunker gun with the DBC/DBU + soundcard unit? cheers!

Was tossing the idea of building an M3 GMC Tank Destroyer when the Trumpeter halftrack comes out. Have no idea of the logistics involved, just an idea at this point. Couple years worth of projects in front of that anyway! 9 I think! :D

when my stug comes together had thought of using the pzIII turret on a pill box of some description with a battle circuit installed and the "kill" commands rigged to a smoker so when it's dead the thing would smoke like mad;):D:D:D:D

If you are considering a static battlefield piece, check out TANKHOBBY.COM

He has has a battlefield circuit that would work, and he has some examples he has built.

wow, your project is coming on well! and fv432, i like you idea of the pz III turret pillbox, you could buy a tank smoke generator from here
[link=http://www.tek-uk.com/prod126.htm]heng long smoke generator[/link]i was thinking of buy one of these for the bulldog when i get it, because i find it a little silly how it only smokes on one side! lol cheers!

RE: Half Track Build

Thanks Matdragon,

This 251c is to be Tamiya battle compatible, not bad for being mostly cardboard cerial boxes?:D
The 251c will be equipped with a slightly modified EL-Mod electronics system. I'm Still working on the armorment details.
As for the running parts they are from my 1/18 scale 21st Century Pakwagon prototype . This was due to a shorted steering servo that could
not be repaired without taking the entire halftrack apart anyway[:o]
The upscaled hull gives alot more room to work with.;)
More pictures as thing progress, that's if anyone wants to keep up with the project.

Updated pictures on cardboard/plywood sdkfz-251C/17 halftrack.

Ok folks here she is and at this time is pretty much complete.
The 251c is a Flak version with a verlinden Flak 38 20mm gun mounted. She is EL-Mod equipped and as before in my other 251 projects features front wheel steering
that is augmented with track steering via XMTR Ail & Rud mix. This halftrack also has link track via HL Panz 3.
The EL-Mod unit is a Prop4 which gives engine sound, gun fire, and hit/destroyed sounds. It is also Tamiya battle compatible.
The 251c is scaled up from a 1/16 scale paper/card model of a 251c APC and then I did the Flak modifications.

I have also included a picture including my HL Panzer 4F1 for size ref.

Hope you enjoy.

Looks great! Thanks for sharing! How did you get all the electronics in there?

RE: Half Track Build

It wasn't too diffulcult as this one is just a bit larger. To help out I made the whole hood assembly and the Flak 38 along with battle compartment floor removible.

Here are the latest pictures of my cardboard cerial box 251/17C.

She is ready for her 1st combat trials.

The EL-Mod electronics is setup as a light armored vehicle and is Tamiya battle compatible.
The 20mm flak gun is being used in the ground role, the electronics is configured so that
when the gun is fired the IRsystem fires 1 time while the 20mm appears to fire 4 to 8 times this is to simulate firing of multiple
rds aginst a armored target.
It should also be noted that the vehicle engine is not required for the gun to be moved or fired.

Hope ya enjoy the pictures,

Regards,

Lovely vheicle you got there! Great job, looks fantastic. I wish you could make a little movie clip, would love to hear the engine and see the 20mm gun in action :)
I guess you have been working with this project 24-7, I thought it would take much more time. I say it again, great job!

Hi guys,
No have not been working on it 24-7, just when don't have anything else to do.
Here is a link to a vid we threw together it's a bit grainy but not bad for 1st try at this. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=BNdaBtOzld8

The big problem is can't drive and do the vid at the same time.
Also with all the playing about with the halftrack the batteries are in need of recharge.

bullyhys
