Ebay/Paypal hack warning

If you use these services be aware of a hack where the winner of a auction who uses the 'Pay Now' button that takes you from the auction page to Paypal can change the 'Ship to: ' address that your Paypal is set to temporarily, this means the thieves get your item. I just lost a $40 item, the thief signed for it with USPS and I have his address and name, you'd think that would be enough these days to get the authorities moving? Use your credit card where possible, Paypal and Ebay are not your friends.

Has this been happening a lot recently? I've never ordered anything from Ebay so I'll take this as a warning... thanks a lot! [sm=thumbs_up.gif]

I have been using Paypal for years with little or no problems. Anything that comes to you from Paypal not addresing you by name, should be sent driectly to Spoof@paypal.
I have stopped a number of these things by letting them handle those issues and deal with them. In winning anything, you should be contacted by Ebay as well as the seller, who in many case, initiates the pay process and use only the Pay Now link directly from the Ebay listing. Put all your transactions in safe keeps until item is received and the deal is closed. CYOA and everything will be OK. [>:]

I only use the pay now link on the "My Summary" page never on any link thats come via email and I always make sure it's going to the right address.

Did you check the ship to address before you paid? if not then it's not ebay or paypals fault and maybe you should contact the police.

The hack came from the Pay Now link in ebay, I have been using Paypal since 2000 and I don't fall for dumb stuff. The lesson here is not to open Paypal from Ebay, I thought it was safe but apparently not.

I don't know.. I would think it would be just the opposite, and I agree with the other poster that said don't use the pay now links that come via email. If you use a pay now tab in ebay it should redirect you to paypal via Secure Socket Layer (SSL), and if the paypal page doesn't open up with https:// it's not a secure or legit paypal page. I'm pretty sure the only way a situation like yours could happen is if someone hacked directly in to your computer thru an unsecured wireless network or something like that. Like the other guy, I've never had a problem accessing paypal thru ebay, but I'm sorry to hear about your troubles all the same.

Paypal has always done good by me. They even recovered cost on a bad transaction $400 from a dealer who sent me a damaged product then accused me of causing the damage.
