1/5 Scale Tanks

I was looking for a semi-large tank, hopefully American tank. Betwen 3 and 5 ft. in length.

Thanks for any help.

your best bet is the M-5A1 Stuart from 21 century. Ther are no longer made but in big demand. There's a website; "M5StuartRCtankbattalion.com that you can go to. There are always some for sale as well as parts sources,
and upgrades and parts are available on the internet.

Panther, do you have a stuart? Jack Yang makes the original style track for the Stuarts to get rid of the dumb dble pin track they put on them. He's on the Stuart website. Those tracks, the upgrades to proper gun, new mg with M-1917 cradle and a few sandbags really make it look like an M-5A1. Now if better electronics could be put it to make it run faster... I have a mini cam in the driver's compartment and it's almost like driving a real one behind the screen.

Yes, I have 2. One will be rebuilt using a kit for an early M5 Stuart horseshoe turret

http://www.diewerkstattonline.com/en...e/m5turret.jpg

from Die Werkstatt.

I know all about Jack Yang's tracks and I am a member of that yahoo group as well. :D

These M5 stuarts are barely 2.6 feet long.

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Neat turret. Are these still available? Could almost reconfigure the tank back to an M-3. Really a nice change over the "standard" M-5A1.
Do you have any problems with Jack's tracks? I'm going to have to do some work on the end connectors and pins because
they do tend to come apart.

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Yes they are still available and no I do not have Jacks tracks.

I've seen the construction of them up close and thought they wouldn't hold up. Guess I was right. The stock tracks are very tough and strong, so why waste money on something that'll keep failing?

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

The tracks really aren't that bad.....just have to watch for a loose end connector but as I wrote, I will work over the tracks before I take it out. They not only give a much more accurate apearance but also sound better. Maybe something in ther materials but they do sound different. It's like the early Pz III scenario and some tigers and M-41s, where the pins were always working loose. For someone who is going to run them hard all the time, it just may present a small problem, but for my application of running a bit for demo at our museum and occasional displays, its OK and I'll solve the little boo-boo.

Who has the older turret...it looks like resin???

Thanks for the post, I'll do some research on them. ;)

Seems like a nice tank, is it turbine compatible?

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

hehehehee no idea...but petrol engines in 1/6 or even 1/4 scale tanks still sound like a lawn mower....

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Thats one of my main issues with fuel-powered tanks - the noise just isnt right, and they generally have to rev like all heck to get anywhere. Then you've got the oil, fuel load etc.

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

True....seen petrol engines powered tanks on youtube...looks great (exhaust pipes) but it just doesn't sound right.....

I know what you mean hatakashi, [link=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=321v1IBSoQg]this[/link] is a good example

Also, I think I found rctransmission's youtube channel [link=http://www.youtube.com/user/iliyacerjak]HERE[/link] (the guy that makes nitro gearboxes for rc tanks)

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Thanks wacky that's exactly the youtube vidoes (ie 1/6 petrol powered M1) I was referring to.
If they ever gonna make a 1/6 or 1/4 Maybach engine then I'll surely put one into my tank!! :D

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Those nitro engines don't sound very realistic, I really want a tank that can handle a turbine. I have 20 too 30k to burn on a project like this. Is a 1/6 scale to small for a turbine?

hatakashi 09-09-2008 07:35 AM

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

U might be able to buy a 1/4 shell then fit ur own turbine engine in.
A running chassis is around £7000, then u can do the rest [8D]

2o to 30K ??? Sheesh, you could prob get ahold of the Rooskie mob and get a 1:1 for that :D:D:D

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

Armortek Shermans are sold out. I havent seen one offered up for sale.

Jack Yang brought a fresh set of his tracks to RC Expo this year. He put them on a Stuart and then let kids run the tank. The tracks held up to the abuse way better than I would have thought. They also provided much better traction than the stock ones. His tank could climb over things that other Stuarts couldnt. Good stuff.

Rumor: There is a new company forming in the U.S. that is going to produce a 1/6th M18 Hellcat.

You may want to check Die Werkstatt as I have heard he is cutting back. Follow this link,

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

or if METAL isn't a MUST HAVE option you can think about 1/6 or 1/4 GRP tanks, and I think it's possible for u to fit a gas turbine in a 1/4 one. :D

RE: 1/5 Scale Tanks

$20 or 30k? Just buy a slightly used fullsize T55 or T72... theyre in your price range
