British Decals

I'm looking for some decals so I can finish up my Sherman Firefly. Any ideas where I can get some?

Thanks Greg

Congrats on finishing your Firefly !! As far as "decals"...that depends on what your Markings may be. One of our resident Detailing Gurus, the incomparable Swathdiver, has posted an excellent tutorial on making your own decals somewhere in here.

If you want to go more or less "ready Made", a Company called MICROSCALE makes water-slide decals "sheets" in a variety of colours if you want to cut out your own "unit symbols".

Tank "Designations/Serial Numbers" may be avilable as dry transfers from LETRASET or CDS (latter also available at the RR shop). MICROSCALE may also make the water-slide type letters/numbers in appropriate sizes ...ie, G-scale (1:22.5). Any well -stocked Model RR shop should be able to help.

Another place to look - "Aftermarket" Decals for Model Airplanes, either static or R/C Types. The latter are die-cut from thin Vinyl/Mylar and take Testors Dullcoat (bottle or rattlecan) very readily. I've used all of these products at one time or other on my own tanks.... :)

Worth a try, eh? More Pictures please!!!

PAINT 'EM!! Can't be too hard since they didn't use stars. Cut a template and have at it. Custom ordered decals can be expensive and take some time.

Greg,

I recently made some of my own decals. I bought some Testor's decal paper from my LHS, scanned color pictures of the markings I wanted from a reference book, uploaded them on my computer, put them into MS Paint, and then played with the size by enlarging/reducing until I got the size right (I printed them on paper and then held them up against the completed tank).

Once I had the right size, I printed them on the decal paper off my inkjet printer set to the highest resoltion and let them dry. Afterwords I applied two coats of Krylon clear coat. After drying, I cut and applied. I got a super custom look on a custom scratchbuild project. I'm very happy with the results.

Can you tell us what unit? I can give you some hints about unit numbers and tactical markings from there.

I was just at Bison Decals website and found this in 1/35th. As you can see, there's not much that can't be hand painted or, look at some aircraft decals and size them up.

That is the set I used for my Coldstream guard vehicle. The cyclops eye was large enough to fake a 1/16 version.
