Tamiya Static Kits
Anyone know if the Tamiya 1/16 static kits like the King Tiger with the Porsche Turret come with any electrics at all. Sound unit, MF unit etc. Is the only thing needed the motors and gearboxes?
|
RE: Tamiya Static Kits
The tamiya static kits are virtually the same, minus gearbox, electrics etc. I've heard of some people converting them to r/c, but after electic components motors and radio I wonder how cost effective this is. But it can be done. Regards, JZ

Tamiya static kit's tend to be called static for a reason

RE: Tamiya Static Kits
If you wanna build a Porsche KT, you will need to buy FO Henshel KT + Porsche KT turret. I do not think you will find the turret, so you will have to buy the whole kit. You can swap the turrets and sell Henshel KT as static kit.

RE: Tamiya Static Kits
The 1/16 Tamiya statics are just about impossible to find now. i believe they stopped production on most of the models. they only had a couple in the first place. The Leapard and the KT but I may be wrong.

RE: Tamiya Static Kits
Both Henschel and Porsche turreted KT's, Leopard, and the DAK Tiger I.
Expect to pay between $150.00 and $250.00 for the Porsche KT and over $300.00 for the TI, if you can find it. |

I really loke the Porcsche KT's look great. You can occasionally find the older version with the dual Gearboxes on ebay. Not all the bells and whistles but if you want to get into a Tamiya cheap. I picked mine up for about $200 shipped.

2 cents on the KT Porsche turret model and the current auction stuff looks to be good values, so far. Though, I am not bidding because I have been there and done it before.
In 2006 the kit and new/old turret drive cost $185.00 plus shipping at thousands of dollars, OK, $45.00 UPS. In 2006 and 2007, the goal of this build was to convert this legacy Tamiya KT Porsche turret kit into a TBU runner with good torque that would let it crawl away at 8 hits. Tamiya old and new parts combined with KT DMD units, bearings, ETO gear reduction units, Willy's RC long can motors and the Daryl Turner good parts including the idler system which helped solve all the broken track issues. Uses an HL Pz3 unit for main gun elevation, but no recoil like the stock Sherman. The turret drive motor uses a small Tamiya ESC instead of the original old servo system, but also sync'd to the DMD for sound with a Y Cable to the receiver. The turret spring slipping clutch was CA glued solid. Clearly, not the most cost effective build, but great fun to assemble. This thing is a smooth running tank club TBU gunfighter, but was declared a lousy kraut cheat'n panzer by the last SCAT prez after just 2 outings. Anyway, sold it to a local guy and all most funded both the Tamiya Panther G and Jagd kits in return. Thank you SCAT. |
RE: Tamiya Static Kits
I thot that in order to convert to a porsche you had to also have the porsche upper hull as the upper hulls for the 2 tanks are different. A club member inmy club did teh conversion and told me thatthe upper hulls are different.

PlaneDev:
They are only in a few points, the main one being the armor ring to protect the turret 'neck', and the 'new' attachment vent-cap for the MF Henschel, where the Basic Porsche used two vent covers to hide the bolts. Oh, and the early deck has no mounts for the new turret traverse motor, but as pcomm used the old 56004 traverse unit (part 53400) that was something that was not relevant. If you glue the armor ring down on the deck, you'll never get a Henschel turret back on without serious work, and the vents are too big to be worn when the Henschel turret is in place, as the turret bustle would catch on them. That help? |
RE: Tamiya Static Kits
Thanks that cleared up some stuff.

White Wolf is correct on all points.
The Porsche turret hull riser ring makes the concept of turret swaps a bit dicey for a runner and expensive. You need things solidly built for a runner, like glued in place. The static kit and the 1st generation, old, not full option, DMD RC kit hull does not have the inside mount points included for the later DMD turret rotation unit as found in the current Production Turret King Tiger Full Option kit, though many people have adapted the full option production turret rotation unit and ring gear assembly to the old Porsche turret. The spacer ring is the basic exterior hull difference, plus the static kit does not include the hull rollers for the Porsche turret to ride on, as they are only included in the rc equipped kit, though hull indent voids are molded in proper positions for the "not included kit roller parts" to drop into. Lastly, besides the stated differences between the kit hulls, the left and right engine vent screen assemblies that are unique to the Porsche Turret KT that would ride to high if glued in place to allow for easy turret swaps with a KT Production turret, so they would need to be deleted. Even if you designed a removable PKT turret ring, aligning a turret rotation system to work for two different sized and shaped turrets seems a bit much, though not impossible. |
RE: Tamiya Static Kits
darn had a winning bid on a porsche kt and in the last 30 seconds got out bided by $5.00

RE: Tamiya Static Kits
That's what I basically plan to do to mine. Rob from Paul to build ... errr, Bill. I'll build a Henschel kit some other day.
