Lipo in Tamiya?
 

Did a search but didn't find a topic in the tank forum about running Lipos in a Tamiya.....

So, I've decided to build and run my Leopard 2A6. I've read about the weight of the battery pack warping the bottom plate of the turret. I'm thinking of running a Lipo pack that I use in my 10th scale buggy. Its a 7.4v 5400mah....

Thinking may be its light enough not to warp the turret and has the added benefit of actually being smaller in size than a standard NiMh or NiCad pack...

Anyone running Lipo in their Tamiya tank of any type? Thoughts?

i run them in all my tamiya tanks the best way to go

work fine, just make sure they do not drop below minimum charge as they will need to be replaced

if you decide to run lipo batteries make sure you have a Low Voltage cutoff module inline so the cells don't fall below 3 volts.. This will damage a LiPo battery.. Any good new ESC's that's made to use with LiPo batteries should have the Low Voltage cuttoff already built into the circuit.. If not, make sure to add one or else you'll have a damaged lipo on your hands that can potential for a fire..

If you EVER notice them start to swell discard of the battery properly... DO NOT throw LiPo batteries in the garbage.. Fill up a large container or bucket with heavily Salted water and let the battery sit in the salt water for at least 6-8 hours .. Then you can discard of the battery..

Might sound ridiculous but believe me, following these precautions can save you alot of problems...

This won't help you all the way. It's the dmd unit that hangs over to much and isn't supported enough that causes most of the sag.
I fixed this problem with a small screw in the back of the turret fixing the lower part to the upper part and so stopping the sagging. But the screw is visible, so a lot of people won't like this fix.

I use Lipos too and find that the tank shuts itself down when the charge gets too low and this is a long way off the minimum charge that might cause damage.

One tip though is never leave them plugged in as they will slowly discharge and be wrecked. Pull the plug out on storage or install an additional on off switch that goes directly to the battery, the tamiya on off is not a true on off switch as the tank is still live even after it is officially in the off position.

In my leo, I cut away some of the plastic that supports the normal stick pack to make room for the wires, thus in doing so, the underside of the turret doe snot bulge out at all. I think its the top turret halve that is pushing against teh wires when you try to close it that pushes the bottom back of the turret out.

Anyway i have been using Lipos (2S 7.4V) in all my tanks ever since I started playing tanks becoz I had some spare packs lying ard that I used to use them for my planes. I have been tanking for 4 years and now, almost all my club members use lipos due to teh size of the packs and the 'charge today and play next month' properties of lipos.
