Tanks and sand...

Did I read on here that tanks and beaches don't mix well? Thinking of taking mine to Florida with me this year but don't want to ruin it. What can go wrong or be damaged by running them in sand and are there remedies? Mine is a Tiger with metal upgrades and nephew has stock Bulldog with metal gear and plastic tracks if weight matters...

Just as in 1;1 scale tanks, sand and salt water will get into everything and screw up a lot. If you have a sealed hull and clean it up after running, there shouldn't be any problem.

i would recommend sealing all the holes.. especially in the gear sprckets... install a seal bearing on bot to prevent the sand from entering the gear itself.. cuz once the gear and the motor catches sand it might malfnction.. ;)

I had no problems with sand with my Tiger I since the hull was sealed well..

I did however crack the links to my tracks since they were plastic back then (3 years ago)
the metal tracks will hold up well and try and stay away from WET sand because this will sure as hell jam your tracks.

Good luck and good Tanking!

I would stay out of the soft deep sugar sand but even if the tanks are sealed your going to have to PM them anyway! My Pershing did very well at the Forth of July 2 years ago, but I bet the Bulldog will do the best with its high center of gravity, and I have done some tesing going through water and sand with that!

I live in Florida and have been running my Panzer 4 with metal upgrades outside doing my best to kill this thing. You really wouldn't want to mess with it in soft beach sand unless your going near the water to the hard wet sand. Unfortunately in Florida we have sand every where not just the beaches. I have found the Panzer 4 can get threw small patches of 3" deep sugar sand, if the area is to large it starts to bury itself. With wider tracks and less weight the Dog may fair better but probably not too much.

Ill be honest, I've been lurking the boards a while now waiting for my tank to get in and when it did I was so eager that I did not take the time to break it in or seal it up before I sent it straight into the field (I do throw pieces of painters tape over the battery cover and switches.). That said I have checked inside the hull and it has stayed pretty clean. The biggest problem seems to be dirt dust coming in the turret from the side hatches.

Wet sand nearly killed my Tiger

Damn stuff just clogged up the tracks until it stalled-

I was lucky the board hadn't burnt out (rx-13) but when I got it home and cleaned it I'd done this to the track pins-

Hey Congzilla - another FL tanker - I think that makes 4 of us now. I'll have to switch my grey tanks to desert colors with all this sand ! No probs so far with tanks in sand.

Thanks for the responses. Woz, you've got me thinking that maybe I should leave it at home! Those track pins... wow! :( I was thinking about the effects of the sand and didn't even consider the effects of the salt & saltwater...
