BATTERIES

I can't seem to find nimh batteries that will fit in the stock battery compartment of my Heng Long Tiger. I would rather not cut open the battery box if I don't have to. Can anyone suggest a source ?

I used one similar to this and had no problem. There should be many suppliers and possibly better prices.

You can check the dimensions given to be sure:

"Standard Dimension: 5.39"x1.87"x0.95" inch, fits all RC10 cars"

That's where I got mine for my PzIII and my Bulldog. They barely fit, but you get batteries up to 4500 mAh for nice long run times. :D

If only they had made the compartment slightly larger; it barely fits the stock battery.

I think that you'll find that with any battery pack, except maybe the Li-Ion battery packs. But, they have their own issues. If you run a search in this forum, though, you can find some input from folks that use those in their tanks.

Just a little caution. I have bought 4 of thier 4200 packs, same seller same brand and 2 of the 4 packs have dead cells. Probably just my luck but you never know.

I use the Trinity Reference cells. They fit in the battery compartment a lot better than the stock batteries and have room to spare for the wires and connectors. You can get them at Tower Hobbies [a sponsor of this site]. They have up to 4600 mAh, but I am using the 3000 mAh and run time is well over an hour. I've never had it die on me in a single session...

If you order any battery online, watch to not get the Traxxas connector models...

Guys...

The reason some packs fit and others don't is the way the pack is constructed. Some are flat 3x2 layout, others are flat sideby-6 layout.

Another thing is ~endcaps~. Some manufacturers put plastic endcaps on their packs to protect 'em, especially common with buggy packs. This would make the pack longer, and hence it won't fit in your compartment.

The last thing is how the power leads are attached. If they come directly off the end, common on the 2x3 packs, they add some length, again causing a fit problem.

When in doubt and buying online, ask the seller for the pack dimensions... but the critical one is usually the ~length~, and how the power leads are attached.
