Cannon fires continuously??

1) For some reason when I turn the Pershing tank's switch on, the switch on the turret on, the cannon fires continuously. Am I doing something wrong?

2) Is the main gun supposed to fire when I press the K button on the remote, or is that just to simulate recoil?

3) Is main gun elevation controllable only by pulling down on the stick and waiting for it to cycle from down to up and then up to down, so if I overshoot my elevation setting, I have to go through the full opposite first?

Thanks, and I am enjoying tank despite these questions.

4) Do you flip the tank on its side while you install the battery? I'm afraid if I flip it on its lid, it will damage something.

1) cant really understand =)
2) by pressing K on the radio control, the tank will do the jerking move and you'll hear a firing sound. i think its the same with the IR version.. not really sure cuz all of my tank are airsoft version..
3) yes, you can only control the cannon elevation by holding the left stick down.. its a cycle from up and down.. once its done moving up and you still holding the stick the cannon will automatically go down..
hopes this helps..

1. Might be you have a short in the switch or the wiring of the cannon. If it like the TIGER you might have a short at the 8 pin connector.

What I do whe I change the batteries is roll up a nice soft towel and lean the tank over to remove the battery "hatch"

Hope this helps

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

I'll try to explain #1 problem better. All aspects of the RC operate as they should, the tanks drives, steers, fires machine gun, makes main gun jumpback when I press the "K" button. There is a switch in the hatch in the turret. Its the hatch where you add the bb's. It has on and off. If I switch it on, the main gun just starts firing. About one shot every second or so until the bullets run out. Then it still keeps popping.

The RC transmitter's left stick seems to function fine. It will move the turret up and down. In fact, if I pull the left stick down, the gun elevation cycles up and down, all the while the gun keeps firing.

I'd hate to pay $25 shipping to return the tank for something I am doing wrong or could fix. I'd rather put that $25 towards a repair or upgrade to a hobby radio interface board.

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

One thought, it could be the transmitter is the problem. Is the left stick up and down a potentiometer, or simply a two way switch? I'm wondering if its a switch, as there is no proportional control of up and down as far as I understand it. Up is fire gun, down is move gun. Sounds like a switch to me.

If anyone knows if its simply two switches, the upper switch might be jammed on. Let me know and I'll put it apart and see.

am thinking that you have a short on your airsoft mechanism or the 8 pin connection as what don said.. cuz i know the only way to activate the airsoft is to move the left stick upward... hmmmmmmmmm..
dont worry theres alot of guys here that are good in electronics and troubleshting tanks...

I can tell you wife not very pleased when she started hearing those airsoft pellets bouncing off the walls of our living room. Almost as bad as the time I brought home a steam engine figured I'd let it run on the kitchen floor. It went wayyyyyyy faster than I thought it would and started bounding off the baseboards. My wife took a fit. I haven't fired it up since!!!!!

Tim,

It really sounds like you have a problem with the airsoft wires. Here is a diagram to show you what goes where when you open it up. The guys on here are wonderful to help.

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

Thanks Torpedochief. I opened up the transmitter and see that the left stick up and down is a two position switch.

I do have one interesting observation, if I turn off the transmitter the firing stops. If I turn it back on, the firing 8/10 times resumes uncontrolled. A couple of times I turned the transmitter back on and the gun stopped firing. I drove the tank around. The gun started firing uncontrollably again as soon as I pushed the stick up. It would not stop again until I turned off the transmiter.

Should the left stick, stick in the up position and not return to zero? Not that I believe that to be the problem, as I opened the transmitter and the switch looks fine.

The sticks should awlays return to centre. If it's stuck up then it's telling the tank to fire.

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

Aha. The left stick "sticks" up. But, if I pull it down and hold it down, it still continues to fire. Puzzling.

On a side note, a 3200 Orion Lipo battery sure makes the tank go better than the 2000mah Nicad that came with it.

i think your left stick transmetter has the problem... try checking the left stick wirings...

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

Yep I think you might now have a stick problem. If you can't find the problem, you mightwant to invest in a new Xmitter. I say invest because trust me.....and all the folks on here will give a big AMEM, you will indeed find a use for the second Xmitter.

You will find a deal on a broken down tank, or decide to upgrade and before you know it you are hooked. You'll build and build and build.

I'll let the place I bought it from know there is a problem with the transmitter. Whether that's THE problem or not is another matter, but if you say the left stick shouldn't freeze in position when you move it up, that's not right and they should replace it.

The supplier has offered to send me a new receiver board. Not sure if they are on the right track with that.

I agree,

Give them another call. I thik your Xmitter left side went[:-]

Don't worry we'll get it figured out and you'll be shootin like a pro soon.

Thanks. The retailer, Mato toys seems pretty good about it. I emailed them yesterday and they got back to me today. They asked for pictures of a broken part (the little tow rope on the back), so I sent them pictures and a picture of the transmitter with the stick stuck forward. With a bit of luck someone there will send me the right part and I'll swap it out myself. These machine's seem to have been made for disassembly and that's encouraging to see.

Tim,
It sounds to me like the switch for the fire function is stuck closed. THis is possible because they are cheap 'reed' type switches. If you want to know for sure, open up your transmitter and snip/desolder one of the wires to that switch. If that solves it you know for sure it is your switch. I'm willing to bet money it's not the receiver board or wiring within your tank.

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

I was looking at it last night, and its a wiper type switch. Similar to a rotary potentiometer with its wiper, only in this case it has a wiper that can touch one of two separate metallic segments on a round disc. If they send me a new transmitter, that should fix it. If not, I'll see if I can unplug the individual wire from a multiwire plug that goes onto the transmitters circuit board. I can't see how the wiper could touch the fire segment if the stick is down and touching the opposite elevation segment, but its hard to see what's on the backside of that disc, you can only see one surface that has the wiper. The back side must have conductors as well, because I can't see the wires attaching anywhere but on the back.

Sounds like a trigger happy gunner inside your tank, spooky.

RE: Cannon fires continuously??

A little more experimenting, and I have found that 100% of the time, the gun stops if I shut off the transmitter for 10 or more seconds then turn it back on. The gun then stays off until it is triggered again. Not sure what this tells me, but it tells me something. If I could only try this transmitter out on another tank I'd know for sure whether its the transmitter or not.

Oh Tim,

You are about to unlock something in yourself. Careful....these things are addictive!

My predidction is that in three months or sooner you'll be building another tank from nothing. Come on in the waters fine!!

I'd always been interested in radio control tanks. Back in the 80's I bought a Tamiya rc car. It was affordable on a student's budget. It came with a catalogue of other Tamiya products, of which the tank caught my eye. But the price!!! You had to have rich parents to get something like that. I see they are still a premium priced product. I also see some of the incredible work you guys have done and I'm inspired. Realism, modification, all very cool. I'd like to build one of those controller boards to hook up my tank to my Spektrum radio.
