King Tiger in Panzer Grey?

I was thinking of painting my Mato King tiger to that dark ghost grey that some Panzers use? Would this be realistic or should i just stick with the camo that came with it?

The King Tiger came about late in the war when panzer grey was no longer in use. It wouldn't be realistic.

It wouldn't be realistic since the Germans have long since stopped using the Panzer gray color since the beginning of 1943. But if you want to color your Tiger II gray, go right ahead. :)

In the instruction manual for the old clutch version KT that Tamiya produced, they mentioned that KT's sometimes rolled off the assembly line in the old panzer gray as they were running low on the base yellow. Then in the field, they would get their makeover. That being said, it's the only place I've ever read that.

I read that there were grey King tigers that saw action in the final battle of Berlin. However those did not have zimmerit

Now just my two cents. If and when I get my KT I'm goingto use the primer red, and dunkengleb in the wave pattern then splotched with irregular Os over the colors. I have one picture of this in TIGERS IN COMBAT II. And a very fine model builder in Japan did one like that.

Take a look

If you're content with the factory paint job, you should keep it stock. But if you want to change it and just want to do a simple paint job, then why not do an all-dunkelgelb paint job?

You can always imagine your tank crew just got their King Tiger fresh from the factory, and have yet to find the time to do the camo job on it? :)

Rule # 1

If you like it then that is all that matters.

Rule # 2

We all start somewhere. And from the looks of it you have a great start!

Rule # 3

Everyone that I know of on this site will be than willing to help you get the tank the way you want it to look.

Rule #4

Enjoy it Brother

By the time the KT's started rolling around I believe they were using the red lead as a base color, so it might be plausable you could have seen one in red only. Red Lead is what we in the Pipe and Iron trades used as the primer. it was also what was used on tin roofs back in the day. The lead is what gave it it's protective properties.

I also wanted a grey KT, after reading alot about the final days of the war a panzer grey KT was looking more probable, paint was scrounged and applied by the crews with little regard to directives. Photos are more scarce for this time leaving artistic license the only option. With these caveats in place here is my KT build :)

Very nice tank!  And thanks al for the info!

Next question...How would i be able to remove the side skirts on my KT?

ArmChairGeneral 10-16-2009 09:33 PM

RE: King Tiger in Panzer Grey?

Mine is a Tamiya, the skirts were optional but if yours is the matorro they are molded on i think, not impossible but more work to remove. I'd use a x-acto and carefully cut them off, other people have used other methods

I like the tank. I had an idea for the paint. could have it german gray then half or partly painted in the yellow. kinda a mid step of the field prep.

Hi Guys,
Torpedoechief is spot on! Build what you like the way you like it. Your tank looks a little shiney as is but if you spray a coat of dull coat or clear matte on it it will dull out t like a real tank. You can also "dry brush" and weather it to your liking. I'll post some pix of the the K T I sold last year to throw some iseas at you. Browse the web for some original pix and check out youtube for some nice color pix and videos of some tank you would like to emulate. The libray is a good source to as are the tank museum pix of their collections.
Good luck and have fun with it...Bob thecomandernj

Iv.e seen some plates of some very interesting colored KT's. Some that went to the eastern from had an almost baby blue color with a white wash over that. I'm not sure if that was just an artists enterpritation or what but the KT certainly had some of the most interesting camo schemes I have ever seen. I'll try to put up some of the plates if I can remember where I saw them.

I seem to remember seeing one with green as the disruptive color and it was a very late production model. There are pictures and a description in The Modeler's Guide To The Tiger Tank if memory serves.
