Panther G nice Tiger I. Panther F I don't believe it's a economical compared to getting a Tamiya Tiger, not counting the Tamiya battle unit if I were to get the parts he described I'd end up paying more for it then buying a Tamiya....without shipping. I'd have to buy the Asiatam lower hull ($118 without shipping RCCOMMAND), the HL Tiger I ($90 without shipping from Phil), Steel gearboxes ($79 without shipping RCCOMMAND and lets say I didnt have them on me), the Tamiya DMD/MFU ($291 with shipping from Jason's store ebay), Tamiya recoil/elevation unit ($45 with shipping Jason's store ebay, again lets say I don't have those laying around)==$623 without shipping. I can go to AAF Museum and get Karen's Tiger I for $575 without shipping. Just thought I'd throw that up here to show everyone.

I didn't say it was cheap. I could have bought the Tamiya Tiger long before the electronics upgrade for what i spent on hull,s turrets, wheels and other parts. my point was that this is the best electronics upgrade for the money. You can get the stock HL hulls to perform reasonably well but for my money the Tamiya Electronics are the only way to go.

Duane, I guess it's all how you look at it. The Tamiya kit you have to buy ($$ wise that is) all at once. A conversion project you can pick and choose the parts along the way (leave out or re-use the HL units or gearbox) and you might pick up a deal here and there on something not quite new but not used. Plus the fact it might be a tank Tamiya doesn't make is more along the lines I was addressing. :)

I know all the prices and where to get 'em so I won't go there. I just think it's a cheaper route in the end with a low investment starting out.

My opinion. :D

Hey Panther G, I wasn't addressing you I was addressing Panther F and his statement that it's economical. :D I think what you did was great and goes to show you with a little ingenuity you can accomplish alot. After seeing your camo job I want to get another Tiger I ;) or like this:

After thinking about it I can see your point, we also have different views on the word "economical", for me the total amount I spent is the measurement for "economical", for you it might mean your budget i.e. what you can afford at that time. I'm of the opinion though that I should just save up for the Tamiya because I've counted the total cost.

My two cents,
Duane

No offense taken Duane, F is correct though. I have had this Tiger going on 3 years. Over that time I upgraded it as I went along and as new and better parts became available. So for me, it was the economical way to do it. In the long run Yes I could have had bought the Tamiya tiger, but the knowledge and expeirience that I gained and the fun I had building it is priceless. Agian it is the electronics package that does really make it economical. We all know what the DMD and MF units can be had for, then you can get any one of 10 decent hobby grade radios for under a hundred bucks, so how can you beat that. All of the HL motors and gear boxes can be addapted to the DMD and MFU so no need to change out all the other components. That is why I left the HL traverse mechanism, it is FAST compared too the Tamiya. Quite the nasty little suprise for the Die hard Tamiya guys. LOL

Yep, I'm thinking economical and you're comparing cost ~VS~ value. Two completely different views, but opinions vary. :D

Nice conversion.

It's funny but I was considering doing this exact thing this summer; only I was going to buy all of the parts at once as a kit (metal hull, upper hull, metal gears, new version of the CD turret, etc). By then hopefully, CreepingDeath will have their new turret on the market and it is supposed to work with the Tamiya electronics. So, I'm glad to see this thread with someone that just did it. Now I know what will fit, which is everything. But, for guys like me who would be doing this sort of conversion for the first time, can you provide:

a more detailed how-to with step-by-step photos?

a parts list (wiring harnesses, plugs & types of plugs, which DMD/MFU, controller/receiver/servo) and where you got them (Jason's ebay store name or seller name, for example)?

Last question: It looks like you might have used one, but just to confirm...did you use a 2.4 GHz radio for this? That would be great to be able to use that instead of the 27 or 75 MHz radios.

Thanks in advance.

I see where your going but not sure I totally agree. For me when I peace meal a project a part at a time I end up paying way more because I end up paying shipping and handling for each part that I buy. 10 parts worth $200 ends up costing me $300 because I end up paying $10 S&H for each item instead of $10 for all.
I usually end up doing it a part at a time for my more expensive projects because it's the only way I can afford it, even though it ends up costing way more.

Your point is well taken Perry, and correct, but again this took along time and was never intended to go this farLOL
And yes it is the new Skysport 2.4 Radio and it works GREAT. The receiver that came with it it is very small so it didn't take up any space. I just double sided taped it to the left Pannier. Everything fit just fine with the Asiatam hull. I even have 2 5000 mAh batteries under the Tamiya speaker box.
If you wanted you could use a much smaller speaker box and have even more room left over. I was even able to retain the upper hull locking mechanism for the Asiatam hull.
The project as a whole turned out even better than I hoped. Tamiya Battle system is installed too.
If you have an HL Tiger and want to use the TBU this is a very easy modification.
I can very easily tear it all down and do a pic by pic build thread , that is how easily it went together.

I'd like to see a pic-by-pic build of at least the electronics and their installation. ;):D

What is your eBay source's seller name?
