Gear box help
 

I want to slow my Mato sherman down like YHR did but I am having a heck ofa time finding some HL 3:1 gear boxes. Does any one have some extra ones laying around or can someone point me in the right direction to buy some. Thanks for the help.</p>

Also, can you place a higher rate resistor on the motors to slow them down?

I see 3:1's at RCCommand, RCtankwars, and I bet matomart probably has them as well.

Not sure if anyone sells *HL* 3:!'s, if you've checked those sites already, apologies.

While I suspect you could put resistors to reduce the voltage to the motors, 3:1's are a better option.

At least on most of the HL tanks, the maximum speed they attain with the 1:1 is pretty darn close to the real deal tank speeds (under ideal conditions), but the acceleration/deceleration is what is lacking for realism. That's where the momentum settings in some of the aftermarket electronics come in.

Hi Alex,
One of the oldest and most simple tricks is to change to a smaller pinion (one with fewer teeth on the gear). This will increase low end torque, improve hill climbing and improve drivabllity since the tank will be less twitchy. They are only a few dollars and should be available and any decent RC shop. They may even help you out with installation. You might have to elongate the motor holes in the gear box with a file but is is simple. Just make sure you clean the greaboxes when done. This fix should only cost $10 to $25. If you want to take it to the next level you can also buy "gear reductions" for the gearbox. The pinion swap is the cheapest though.

Is the pinion gear you speak of the one on the motor? If so, Ithink it's already small enough. I opened up the boxes today and took a look at the stock stuff. The pinion (if it is on the motor) has something like10 teeth and is already less than half an inch across.

Hi Alex,
Yes, the pinion is the small gear on the motor. If you cannot use/find a smaller gear than you may need to use the add on gear reducetions. I'll post some pix. Bob

ebay is always the best place to check the price then do your serious shopping later.

do a search using "8T pinion gear" or "8teeth pinion gear" or something like that, there is a whole bunch of answers for your selection.
Be careful though, besides choosing the correct teeth count, the teeth pitch must be correct to whatever gearbox you are using.
Since RC cars are the dominate thing, most of the pinion gears are for the RC cars. If the gear's teeth pitch is correct, you will be fine.

I am not shure about the sherman motors but for the 380 in henglong you need 48 pitch and 2.3mm shaft. I have gotten them from ebay with a set screw or if you can drill them out from 2mm to 2.3mm you can get a bag of 20 8t 2mm for about $5.00 at that price even if you mess up a couple it is no big deal.

where is the ebay site at? I would like to grab them at this great price

300 and 400 series motors' shaft are all at 2.3mm diameter.
pitch....I am not sure.....but Cheap tank said 48, then I had learned something for the day.

Ok....So Iused the 8 tooth pinion idea and it slowed the tank down enough for me to be happier with it. Idon't have the capabilities of video taping it in action but it is a WHOLElot less twitchy.

The funny thing is Ifound the gear in one of my son's broken toy monster trucks. They are the little 5 inch long monster trucks made by hotwheels. You push them and they keep going...I don't really know how to describe it but there was a perfect pitch 8 tooth pinion in there. It only took a bit of work to make the hole in the gear larger and press it on to the motor. After that I had to enlarge just one of the holes where the motor screws into the plastic box, enlarge the actual motor hole, and set the gear lash. All in all I have 7 bucks invested in the re gearing of my tank. Love it. :)
