RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Next, had to finish turret clean up. Here, I've filled and sanded the battle damage from the original Cromwell turret, and added the new bolts which I took from the read of the turret.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...9/100_1204.jpg Here, I've finished the fine sanding, and given the turret a shot of primer. Looks pretty sharp. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...9/100_1209.jpg And then, checked out on the hull..... the hatches look amazing! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...9/100_1208.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...9/100_1207.jpg |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Finally, decked in the back section. Note that I'm using Lego blocks to add strength and to help keep things square - they're amazing. Also, note the box holes on the side of the decking, to allow the speaker to be heard. They will be covered on the final tank by the flared plating on the sides. All in all, coming along nicely!

That's a really beautiful build. The turret is eye candy to me. And the Lego block idea knocks me out......LOL.........Why didn't I think of that? Do they work with styrene cement or do you use CA???? Rex |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Hey Rex,
I use CA on everything... I buy the cheapy kind at the dollar store (It's not even crazy glue brand!) and it sticks fast and like concrete. The lego block thing is an old-time scratchbuilders trick from way back - they're perfectly engineered to be 100% square every time. Nothing better for setting up corners. Beats eye-balling for sure! Shep |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
I'm with Rex on this one. The lego use is wonderful, kinda like machinist 1-2-3 blocks. I guess i will start on my Cromwell build later in January. I should finish my Panzertroyer in the next couple of weeks and the Cromwell is calling to me. I am considering a dual project where I build the Cromwell and a Comet at the same time. That way I can take advantage of similarities of many details.

Several years ago, I bought a near-complete run of Scale Modeler magazine off ebay. The books from the 1970-73 period are a treasure trove of little scratchbuilder tips.... picked up a ton of good little 'tricks of the trade' from them.
Hmmmm... maybe we should start a 'scratchbuilders tricks and tips' thread? Shep |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
I'm thinking hard about a Comet too, once the Cromwell is done... but I think I might go for a Grant tank in Western Desert colours. Always loved that tank!

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Lego is amazing stuff. Just aout every model I kit bash has a lot of Lego in it. My Sherman Fireflies are full of the stuff. From internal gun mounts to external stoarage boxes, lego has a role to full. When glued together the stuff is incredibly strong.
My last use of the stuff was to build a snap lock receptacle for the Mato Metal hull. Anyway I solidly stand in support of Lego. |

Here's a link of the Cromwell (half-built) running and firing. Pretty cool!

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
I don't know. Pretty convincing but the model is too fast. Turret looks good! Armed with "how" he did it I need to look at my 1/35th kit and think.
Thanks for the video! :D ~ Jeff |

Wow... it's been a while since I posted in this thread. But with the announcement that Panda is doing a 1/16th Panzer 38(t), I figured I'd better get the Cromwell out of the way before I get another project started!
Just getting the rear end of the tank together. The air intake unit at the back is on, and I'm starting to get the rear deck in shape to start etching the panel lines and adding details... |

Looking good [8D]

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Gonna have to keep track of this build. Have Christian's kit, but not gonna have the time to get to it for awhile. Very unique build, great looking so far!

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Question for everyone...
I am going to covering up the rear of the turret with a camouflage net, that were really common to Cromwells in Normandy and Northeast Europe in 1944. Does anyone have a source for the them, or a really good technique? Lemme know! Shep |

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Found a couple of great reference shots for the kind of camoflage netting that's going on the Cromwell's turret. It's called Hessian Camoflage... of course whenever I hear the word 'Hessian' I think of Yosemite Sam from the Revolutionary War episode of Bugs Bunny.
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps3f23134b.jpg And a nice profile showing lots of stowage and gear. Also, this is a pretty good example of how Cromwells were seen in the field during operations - the fenders either came off, or the crews removed them. Note what appears to be a Bren gun on the top of the turret. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psaec71442.jpg Been picking away at some more detailing. I've got the rear deck all finished. Only thing there is to add the grill over the rear opening... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psac30fbb6.jpg And got started on the front with the periscopes.. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psd5a24e2f.jpg Thanks again for looking. Hopefully, more progress to report by the end of the weekend. Shep |

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Cool! I think it's great that you built two at once! I might do that on my next project.
For a whole bunch of reasons - work, kids, a house reno - I had to put the Cromwell away for a year or so. I like to just pick away 20 minutes or so at a time. Today, I'm going to try and get the stowage boxes on the sides done... that's really the last serious piece of construction left to do. Then I just have to change the front idlers wheels and detail the front. Maybe a week or two. And then into paint... and then onto the next project! |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Hope I'm not posting too many pictures..
The last photos were really dark, so I brought the Cromwell upstairs into the light and took some nicer shots. Got the storage boxes on, and now it is really feeling like a Cromwell tank. The position of those boxes also makes the turret feel a little more to scale, I think. It's still a bit big, but I can live with it. Does anyone know where I might find some 1/16 or 120mm British tank crew figures in open-hatch positions? I think they'd look great in this tank... http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...pscf519a54.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps8b3487d5.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psc680dfb6.jpg |

I haven't watched them yet (there are two 1 hour episodes) but the BBC made them so they are gonna be good. Other tank videos are listed on the sidebar too. |
RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Nice model, Cromwell is on my to do list (along with all the others lol). I'd seen that turret diorama model and did wonder if it could be used. Here it is and a great job you doing. The BBC Tankie series was excellent, though the chaps in it didn't rate the Cromwell when they first saw it ! Personally I think it's a purposeful looking tank but then again I didn't have to go to war in one [X(]

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
By the way, Hessian or Burlap was used in rolls up until the 90s as a shape breaking layer covering the whole vehicle. Over this went the cam net. So a Hessian roll on the back would be perfect. Way back in the 80's in my Armoured days, we used to paint Bricks, doors and windows (some with flowers in them !). <div>and we used to pretend to be German houses, thus foxing Soviet recce pilots into thinking that suddenly Germany was covered in wobbly buildings ! </div>

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Really getting close now... I've got the stowage boxes made, and on... they're a really distinctive feature of the Cromwell, and certainly add to it's shape...

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
And a couple of shots of the front end details... rivets, towing lugs going on, Besa machine gun mount and visor cover. Still have to mount the lights and light guards, then it's off to paint.

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
Quick update!
All I have left to do now is build a grill cover for the back of the tank, and add a couple of small details. Priming it this weekend, and then hitting it with the OD the weekend following. Stay tuned! Shep |

RE: 1/16 Scale rc Cromwell Tank build thread
More progress!
Finished off the major detailing.. got the running light covers on, put the grill on the back, and raised unit on the back deck. Then, quickly masked off the running gear and gave it a shot of Tamiya Surface Primer. I love that stuff. As you can see, it is still very much winter here in Canada! Now that the upper hull is all one colour, it really starts to look like a Cromwell. Can't wait to get some Olive Drab on her! http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psc21a3bb8.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps46f2b01d.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...psa339c7cb.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps5e29e548.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16...ps820c50bd.jpg |
