new build thread-SU152

I know there are several of these out there but i have not seen a build thread on one so i am starting this one. From the roughest cut on! Grab your popcorn and beer.

I am using the Heng Long KV-1 as a base. I purchased the El-Mod SU-152 kit from Phil at RCTank Wars several months ago and after looking at my list of to-dos i arbitrarily decided to start work on this.

The plan is to use Mato tracks and sprockets, Impact Transmission units, Asiatam recoil, bearings and adjusters. still deciding between EL-Mod and Tamiya electronics for brains, but i have both in stock. I have the late style metal wheels from Tank Zone. I also have upgraded suspension arms and a few other goodies to utilize. here are the first stage photos. BTW if anyone has one completed or in work i am sure we would all love to see it.

The first step was to remove details and cutout the upper KV-1 hull to fit the casement (fighting compartment)

Good for you. That's a great subject to model (especially for those of us that play Red Orchestra). It's also a detailed enough of a build that it should hold some interest. Please post a lot of pic's of this awesome brawler.

Awesome, I don't think I've seen a SU-152 build yet! Hopefully you can remain focused and hold off on your gazillion other projects!:D

I got a bit done on filling holes in the hull, removing internal and external lower hull details that are not needed for this 152, installed the metal return wheels, bonded in the transmission support bearings, removed and modified the suspension arms to accept the metal road wheels and made an interesting discovery. Heng Long put in additional holes for the suspension springs as we discussed last year. So, at least for the KV-1, you no longer have to drill new holes to re-clock springs they are already there. next steps are setting up and installing the Impact TU's and installing the track adjusters.

Looking forward to the pics! <div>Is the SU chasis the exact same as the KV? The ride height seems to be quite a bit lower than the KV-1, when looking at the 1:1 photo's of them, I cant tell if the lower half is shorter (height wise) or that the roadwheels just have more slack in them. </div>

RE: new build thread-SU152

Yes the SU was based on the KV-1 chassis. The JSU was based on the JS-1 and 2 chassis. A lot of pics labeled as SU-152 are really JSU-152. From the top the radiator vents are distinctively different and the SU has the rounded rear deck of the KV-1,while the ISU has a slanted flat deck.. from the side the SU- has flat disk center covers on the drive sprockets and the JSU has conical center covers on the sprockets. There are quite a few other subtle differences, in fact the JSU hull did have a bit larger volume and so it may appear to set a little lower. The sprocket covers and rear deck are my main indicators.

That is a JSU-152, not a SU-152. see my response to Tony.

Thanks for the info, learn something new all the time! I just ran a quick search on the two and your right, a lot of the same photos are showing up the same for the both. Dang google and the gremlins behind it!

A bit more work done. Impact gearboxes assembled, run in and installed. Idlers installed. All body holes plugged and aft lower hull brass box stiffeners installed. replaced rear deck with correct later deck, primed upper body to see flaws. Lots more to do. Electronics and speaker will probably go in next then move to gun installation and upper hull detailing. BTW has anyone used the Asiatam recoil unit with either Tamiya or EL-Mod electronics?

Interesting to see someone document a build using the El-Mod conversion. The SU-152 was actually built on the KV-1S chassis. Glad to see yours will have the correct late style road wheels and return rollers on it. I've also noticed that often on the internet, photos of the ISU-152 are mislabed as being an SU-152 and vice versa. The IS-2 based ISU is a taller AFV and like you pointed out has many differences when compared to the KV-1S based SU-152. I believe it was the SU-152 that was given the nickname "Animal Killer" or "Zveroboy" after its performance during the Kursk battle, not the ISU-152, which I have seen also associated with the "Animal Killer" nickname. The ISU is only the Zveroboy's younger and bigger brother with Iosif's name attached to it..

Kclank.......If that's your real name...........
You seem to know more about the armor of the Evil Empire than the average red, white and blue blooded American tanker should. Did the FBI overlook you in the recent raid and spy swap? I'm not trying to stir anything up here.....I'm just asking.........[sm=confused.gif]

Umm your quoting the the wrong person. That wasn't kclank writing but RSEA. Try to pay closer attention :D And I'm just wondering is there something wrong with someone interested in Russian/Soviet armor? Are you the RC model police? And I battle with Steve/RSEA at our Phoenix battles and he's just as American as you or I.

Duane

And I like your SU-152 kclank, that's my next project when I can find an ELMod SU-152 HL Kit (have a Asiatam KV-1 metal hull with late wheels on order).

Not to worry even when they let Rex go home on weekends he still has to wear the ankle bracelet. Seriously he is as harmless as a pet (dead) duck. lol. Since he is a close friend I allow him to utter whatever he wants.

BTW Rex was quoting me and I am sure since you are reading closely you will note that he did it accurately.!!

Duane...
My apology to you and anyone else that I may have offended with my inappropriate sense of humor. I meant no harm. I was under the mistaken notion that my comments would be seen as "tongue in cheek", which was my intent.

Instead, they turned out to be "foot in mouth".

As my friends will testify, that's because I suffer from "head up ass", in my old age.

I love Russian stuff, Hey, I'm 1/4 Russian.

.............and 1/4 German...........................and 1/2 Polish......................

Talk about an identity problem! But I can screw in a lightbulb in record time!

Oops, I sure do have egg on my face. ;) Sorry Rex for me not paying closer attention and what I said, did not know you were just poking fun at your friend kclank. I still like your build kclank and hope to duplicate it. Can't wait to see how you do the elevation and recoil.

You're doing a really nice build, Ken - thank you for sharing it. I'm not nearly as far along on mine, (having to cut out and replace that rear deck has stopped me cold. But seeing that you were able to pull it off may give me the courage to try it as well). I managed to strip the 3mm hole in the roof that the gun pivot is suspended from, but was able to re-drill it for a 4mm countersunk screw. I would like to mount the elevation and traverse unit to the roof, but have not figured out a way to do that yet. I also plan to mount some sort of bracket to the barrel to hold the recoil mechanism; but haven't figured that out, either.

The new KV book by Neil Stokes shows a couple of details I haven't seen on drawings before. There is a "shell loading port" on the right side of the hull. I don't have the book in front of me right now for exact location, but it showed it above the roadwheels, between the 2nd and 3rd wheels. There's also a small bracket underneath the door for attaching some kind of loading tray.

The other detail, (and I don't know if I'm going to bother to add it; because I can't figure out a way to do it very well), is that the main engine hatch did not have enough room to open to the front with the new superstructure, so they reversed the direction it opened by putting the hinges on the rear. There's also a bent-rod handle on the cover that both assisted the crew in pulling it open, and could also be used as a support to hold up the hatch when it was open. -Mike

Cool sutff thanks. When i figure out my recoil and el/traverse mounts i will share it. i have an idea that is similar to the methods i used on my Elefant.
Any chance of posting pics on the details ("shell loading port" on the right side of the hull.
