Possible DD Sherman build

Ok so I am hooked..I have only owned a tank for a few days now and already I am wanting another one...But this time I am actually consdering a full feldged build.(the KV-1 I got was more of a test tank to see if i like rc tanks...mabe i will detail it later)..So back to where I was headed with this...One of my favorite tanks has always been the sherman(and the King Tiger)..So I want to do a build regarding it...So I have decided that I might model it after the DD sherman...but I wanted to ask what peoples takes on and experiences withthe various shermans is..I know the best is always Tamiya but how is the HL sherman...I also I heard that there is a mato sherman?...What are people's opinions on the shermans and this build idea?

You mean, how is the Mato sherman and you've heard there is an HL Sherman. No HL sherman as of yet....and it appears to be only a rumor at this point.

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

ahh ok...yea your probably right considering i am still fairly new to rc tanksi looked it up and thought it was the other way around but anyways....

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Correction, there is an HL Sherman.....it's 1/30 scale. lol

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

lol...but i am refering to the 1/16 scale...so what is your take on the shermans and a possible DD sherman build?

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Well I'm all up for new build threads. I love to see things people can do that I can't, it's what I live for....<<insert sarcasmLOL!

I don't have a Sherman, while I will be getting both the Mato and Tamiya soon. I've heard plenty of mixed review on it, but most seem to be limited to Mato's electronics and scaling.....wait, that means everything about an RC tank, lol! No, some of the guys builds lately like YHR, Yellowshaker and last but not least Edoubleaz's builds are really inspiring so, I'm pretty open to getting a Mato Sherman, and if all else fails, it'll be great for parts! lol Glad you're getting into this hobby, not surprising though as most everyone who enters gets sucked into the vortex of money flinging that we call a hobby.lol
Lol but I have learned that most hobbys are that way..I was into model railroading many years back...it wasn't cheap andtook up tons of space eventually It all had to go on ebay...So to keep my self busy I just built, painted and weather regular model plains(one i am particular proud of)...but I wanted something more engaging so i found rc tanks...

The Sherman DD is interesting. The Mato M-4A1 is a good tank for it, but it's going to take a lot of scratch modelling. There are all the hydraulic braces all around the screen, then the question of do you want to raise and lower the floatation screen, or just have a representative model. Silk would probably be the best material once you have devised a method to keep it errected. Not many photos or diagrams available as a guide for scratch making....even Dick Hunnicutt's Sherman book. Good luck.

That would be a great build, but way too much for me to take on. Good luck and keep us posted on any progress.

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

I know thats what I am starting to figure out while I am been doing some researching...One thing is there is a lack of imformation on exactly how these tanks operated and the body design under the "cover" Also the front end requires exstinsive remodeling which for my skill level at this point may be to much...I think I have the skill to but in the props and mabe make it truly amphibious like the real ones(but hopefully more reliable)...one option i considered is the other versions of the "amphibious" shermans..these had intake and exhaust stacks that were above the water...I believe they were called "deep wading" shermans...might be alittle easier to model...

Might be to much for me to take on too...lol

There's a guy who did one and I can't for the life of me find it again. It was beautifully done! Really sucks that we don't have categories.....search isn't always that reliable since not everyone has or uses spail chekrr.

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Yep, that's the one. Another project tank that makes trying pointless. lol I tell ya, these guys here raise the bar a little to high sometimes that some projects are best kept unposted, specifically mine, lmao!

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Yea I know I thought I might be doin somethin that no else had done and could set the bar myself for that build but then I saw this and at my skill level realized that at this point I can't come close to that...but I do have a plan b...

This is my plan b buildto the DD sherman build...it looks like there will be less fabricarion of structural parts and will be better for my skill level

Also, check out the guys at Dak's build. It'll give you a great example of what you're up against.
http://web.mac.com/ethandunsford/DAK...c_Sherman.html

"Snake Eyes" is an absolute beauty! I love the camo paint job and everything about it.

The forum has a good mix of people. It is really a pleasure to see these fantastic recreations. I little intimidating maybe, but it does display real craftsmanship, and a standard to measure up against. I would hope these masterbuilds don't scare others off. It is amazing the info learned even from the novice builders. Everyone has a different way of doing something, and I have seen some real nuggets from guys who may not be masterbuilders yet, but they are working towards it. The sharing of info is what makes us all better modelers.

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Ok guys so after exstinsive research and a self evaluation of my skill level and newness to rc tanks and armor in general I have decided to build thissherman...
http://afvdb.50megs.com/usa/pics/m4a1.jpg

I think if this is the tank that I will be building I will need the Mato sherman right?..but I think this will be minimal as far as hull modification goes...so i think this will be a great first build....

RE: Possible DD Sherman build

Look forward to seeing that build, whether you post a progress or the end results. I love variant tanks, even if they were serviced or not.

I like variant tanks to especially the sherman variants(there are so many of them)...and I am not sure whether or not I will be able to post my progress or even when I will be able to start but I will post the finished product.
