Leo questions
Has anyone had any experience with the A4? I know they use the clutch style drive and don't have all the bells and whistles. My question is how would one go about converting this to an FO tank? Is there a gearbox set up that would fit this thing other than the clutch drive? Is it possible to use the A^ components for an upgrade? Thanks for any help guys.</p> |

Hey Joe,<div></div><div>As long as the width of the A4 is the same as the A6, I don't see why you couldn't convert the A4 with A6 components. The most important part of the gearbox mounting is adding standoffs for mounting the gearbox down which you could find at Ace or most hard ware stores. Then you'd have to drill 4 holes in the A4 hulls axle slot so you can mount the A6's axle. If you get that done....everything else is just cake. You might have to use the Leo A6's sprocket though.
Edit: after examining the A4 manual.....it comes with standoffs. Not sure if you could make it work...but, it's a try. If not, then you might need to replace the 3 screws with long bolts than run all the way down and through the hull and bolt them in place. I think the biggest problem is finding the right height the 3 stand offs or spacers need to be.</div> |
RE: Leo questions
Tony, you seem to know alot about this tank. Do you have an A4?
|
RE: Leo questions
Heck no, lol.
I down loaded the Manual when I was considering buying it and performing this upgrade myself. Look at my prior post, I uploaded snap shots of both the A4 and A6 manual or at least what I was planning on doing when and if I got it. |
RE: Leo questions
AFV model sells a transmission unit for the A4. Basically the Tamiya Sherman TU in a metal plate mount.
I did it with mine using el mod. All I lack is the recoil. Sacrificed for the 360 turret & headlight. Oh yes, look at the panzer-ketten forum on the Leo A4 builds. Came across a thread that used the Leo 2A6 TU on the A4 |
RE: Leo questions
Joe if all else fails i have the solution for the A6 sprockets so you can use some standard Tamiya gear boxes with these sprockets so if you can get one go for it. It is an awesome looking tank. Some of the upgrades some countries made too them make them look like 6's but way cooler.

I bought the Leo! <font color="#00265e" size="2">mizuinu</font> , any chance you have links to these sites?
Greg, I have to decide if I am going to try using all Tam parts to do the upgrades or go Elmo with it. I want all the turret functions too. |
RE: Leo questions
AHA!! So you bought that!!;)
Have fun with it.:D It was the Gepard chassis but the A4 uses the same chasis. Kudos to the dude on panzer ketten whodunit Just go to http://www.rc-panzerketten-forum.com...tuser=0&page=3 |
RE: Leo questions
This forum is a good reference site. Too bad I do not read German. But man, they build serious stuff there[X(]
I am looking at the possibilities for my plastic hull Gepard. I am looking for just the lower metal chassis as the width of the metal hull & plastic hull versions for the Leopard & Gepard are different. |
RE: Leo questions
Well Joe, once you make that conversion to the 540's..... so much for that race! lol....Maybe I would have an advantage over you since you'll have a metal hull! lol
|
RE: Leo questions
Ok, what did I miss?Is there something I should know about this tank? Did I get ripped off or something?
|
RE: Leo questions
LOL! Guess you forgot about the Sherman VS my Leopard! Once you make that conversion, that Leo A4 will be the fastest tank you have!
|
RE: Leo questions
No Tony lol, I saw the post by Mizuinu and thought maybe I got beat here.
I am not sure if I am going to put A6 parts in this thing or go with the Sherman TU's for it. |
RE: Leo questions
All I can say is HE HE HE HE HE HE you got it baddddddddddddddddd.<div>
</div> |
RE: Leo questions
My brother in law has one, he never upgrade it, it runs smooth ... i think you have to upgrade everything would cost almost as much as a new one .... though a Leo A4 has no Fo would it not be sompler to put HL soundmodule into it? There is plenty of space left
|
RE: Leo questions
Hmm, well I really don;t know much about that tank. I guess I'll end up putting Sherman boxes in it with elmod to keep it simple.
|
RE: Leo questions
is that necesary? It runs good with the original ones
|
RE: Leo questions
I would liek to make it a full option tank with sound and turret functions, so I think it would be necessary to do this...
|
RE: Leo questions
can't you use the original motorbox wired on the dmd controller would be a sorrow less, more than room enough to place turretrotation and gun evelation etc ... good luck ...with lots of foto's
|
RE: Leo questions
Karel, would you use elevation and rotation from the later model A6? And the dmd?</p> |
RE: Leo questions
that would be the best i think, i has the leo speed of turretrotation, our belgian army had leo's to saw them in action in 1980 on battledrills on a rocket site (ours) they were in no time at us we had 2km sight on the field if that was real war we lost then. I were german leo A4 like you had bought one, our leo's were with rounded turret like on the pics of rivetcounter when he was in zelzate
I you can afford you must try to buy the geopard to it has turret and gun evelations and they move fast like the real turret did , no no noise on it |
RE: Leo questions
does the two leo's use the same tracks , i don't think the A4 is more then 20y old by now
|
RE: Leo questions
I know I saw leo A4 trakc son ebay but not sure if they are smae as A6. So I cannot use the leo A6 turret hardware?
|
RE: Leo questions
why not if you use the DMDand the MF of the leo 2 nothing is impossible, i bet you convert it the right way, the A4 turret is also big but thicker than the Leo A2
|
RE: Leo questions
Look at the customrcmoodels website. It was done there used, the original gearbox but was modified so the DMD can be used
The original gearbox used too much space so I bought one on AFV model as I don't have the idea before on how to approach this mod:D http://www.customrcmodels.com/id455.htm Here's what I was doing: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_91...tm.htm#9901220 |
