Hey Folks,
I'm converting my Prospec 5t to electric with the Tekno conversion kit. I'll run The Monster Max 2200 combo with 6S for bashing and 4S for racing, but I can't decide what Clutch/Brake system to use. I'm well aware that electric needs no clutch or brake, but I'm wondering if the additional tuning options that having a clutch and mechanical brake (not to mention the lower strain on the motor, the lower power consumption, and reduced heat) offers is really worth it.
Pros:
Can tune power delivery via clutch
Can adjust front/rear brake bias
Stronger braking
Less heat
Less stress on the ESC/Motor
Fractionally longer runtimes (electronic braking uses quite a lot of juice I understand)
Cons:
More weight (servo and brake assembly)
More power consumption maybe (driving braking servo)? Need to understand if this is less than using electronic brake or more?
More wear on parts (clutch shoes, brake pads)
Slightly more rotating mass (clutch and brake assembly)
What do you guys reckon?

The first thing that comes to mind is that if the clutch setup was any good than why doesn't anybody use it? As far as I can tell, all the pro drivers use direct drive. And nobody locally runs the clutch. The one guy that did, hated it.

Yeh I guess that is the burning question...what do the pros use...wonder how I can find out if there are any that are using clutch and mechanical brake and think its worth it.

the electriclutch actually makes the car come into turns like a nitro car, the car can roll free and not feel knotchy or feel like a slight drag brake
your right many pros dont use it but cant you only use it on the tekno setup?
also are you running a bone stock 5t because I know a few things you can do to it lol

I know a few guys who run the Tekno clutch setup....they say their motor and sped control run cooler then without the clutch....they really like how it works...

Good to hear, thanks Neal. Do they race with that setup? Could u ask them what clutch springs they use please (if any, I hear you don't even need springs to get the benefit).

the teknodrive clutch is always engaged, it just slips abit at very low end to quell some of the bottom torque from a monster truggy motor

The clutch and mech brake are not required. My 5t is not box stock (well, it's all mugen parts, but it is fully setup to my driving style, hinge pin holders, steering blocks, ackerman etc). Why, what did you have in mind?
I don't like the freewheeling effect of nitros, it's unrealistic and unhelpful, I used to race nitro on road, which fortunately are belt driven cars and have 'some' of what you might call engine braking (I know it's not engine braking, but similar effect, as when you come off the gas, the car transfers a little weight forward and slows down).
So yeh, the kit FINALLY arrived after being held in greek customs for a MONTH!! They charged me another $100 for the privilege of collecting it too.

I started stripping down the old chassis and cleaning parts last night, will do a build thread with lots of photos over the next few days. Then a running vid of 'The MADMAN'! lol

Techno offers two clutch options. The Traktion Drive or the Elektri-Clutch
They operate differently.

I know what they offer, I'm going direct drive. Just finished the build, but need a servo wire extension, nice kit I must say. Looks great, can't wait to try it. Still waiting for batteries from HK anyway. I'll be running double 3s 5000mAh 40c to start with, on the mamba monster 2200 combo and a 15t pinion, after checking temps I may go up a few teeth if I can. This thing should be off the hook.
