high grade aluminum is darn expensive.. and machining aluminum is even more expensive cause you waste most of it. so you have to buy a big chunk of it and only to machine it away. plus theres the cost of labour and bits.. that said i wouldnt pay that much for it. a foot of 6 inch square solid 6061 costs around 200 bucks.. not cheap at all.

people say steel is cheap but for a foot of inch and a half DOM tubing its 30 bucks..

I found a place online that sells 7075 aluminum that's .125" thick for $30 per square foot.

Chassis's are only like 3mm thick. That's enough to make a chassis. ._.

yeah.. fine. but were talking about billet chunks for machining.
the O/P wanted to know why it would be so expensive. and i gave him an answer.
its higher priced then normal. but thats because "normal" is all made in china etc..

someone said aluminum was cheap.. but it isn't.

Titanium isnt that bad to work with its hard and a bit gummy, but if you got the right tooling its not so bad. 317L stainless is a pain to work on

I bought a chunk of 7075 aluminum a few weeks ago for a project it was .75 x 3 x 51" cost me $80. The cost for that servo saver is all machining cost. If they did a high production run of it it would be alot cheaper since the more you make the cheaper it is to make.

You gotta remember the retailer is probably sticking on at least 100% mark up.
