Thunder Tiger CV joints keep popping out after taking Jumps?
Hello all,
I posted this question in the Thunder Tiger thread, but figured maybe some others have experience with this issue.
But my situation is that I jsut got my ST-1 Pro together with bits and pieces from Ebay. Got my z.28R in there, and everything runs great.
During that time, I also rebuilt the shocks and threw those back on there.
The problem is, that when I take a jump with this thing, the CV joints in the rear pop out of the drive cups. It happens one at a time.
I've checked all the bolts and nuts back there. I've had the rear shocks in both position holes, still same problems. They don't pop out everytime, but they do enough so that it's not race-able.
What's really got me vexed is that once one of them pop out, I can't get it back in the drive cup without removing the hub. I mean I can really tug and pry and I can't get it in, so I don't see how they are popping out?
Any suggestion or ideas as to why this might be happening?
Thanks,
Forrest

is it like the pin part that keeps coming out?? if it is then put a new pin in there and CA glue it in there so it stops sliding out

If you're refering to the pin that is on the end of the CV joint, it is still in there.
So I don't see how it is possible for this thing to be coming out with the frequency that it does?

The reason it's happening is because there is a lot of up travel of the rear suspension. You can probably do it manually by compressing the suspension all the way. There was a problem like this in the CEN truggy, but CEN made new shorter arms to fix it.
So things you can do to fix the problem...
Put fuel line on the shock shaft to limit up travel
Drill a new hole in the arm that is closer to the diff (pushes CVD farther into outdrive)
If there is room, shim the inside of the CVD behind the bearing
There may be other things you can do to fix the problem, but these are the easiest things to do.

do what crobar said put a piece of fuel tubing on the shaft to stop it from going up all the way.

When you say to use the fuel line......you do mean to place it on the shock shaft just to limit the amount of travel the strut will allow correct?
Now that you mention it, when I rebuilt and put new shocks on it, there was a piece of rubber tubing there. I removed it as I put those little black unicorn looking sleeves/covers over the bottom of the shock assembly. So this problem was already there.
And I was messing with it last night, and I did see that if I really pushed on the A-arm, really compressing the springs, I could almost get the shaft to go back in the drive cup.
So I will put some rubber tubing on there to see if I can reduce the suspension travel some. '
Thanks Fellas!

RE: Thunder Tiger CV joints keep popping out after taking Jumps?
Thanks to all you guys for the help.
I've got some fuel tubing on my struts now. I wound up using between a quarter-half an inch of tubing to restrict suspension travel.
I haven't tested it thouroughly, but so far, the CV joints haven't come out yet. I jumped this one hill by my house about 10 times so far. Previously it would have definetely come out.
So maybe I've got a fix, maybe I've reduced the odds the shafts will come out. I was going to go to the track this weeekend to test it properly, but I've got to go out of town. So next weekend hopefully we'll get to the track to see if I've got it fixed for sure.

That's because its not an RTR
Every truggy has a problem with someone sooner or later. I like my RTR I win the A-main every other week usually, so that's something.

I think it's sorted out. Had the car at a friend's house and we were jumping ramps.
I had it up at least 6 feet landing pretty harshly and awkwardly. No problems thus far. Got an actual race Friday so I should know for sure then.
