Low torque mammoth?
I have a mammoth st that I got from a friend who gave up on it. I just got it tuned in pretty good, temp staying at about 245-260 and it goes pretty fast but I have 2 problems. The first is that it seems like it has little torque off the line. Once it gets going it moves pretty good but it seems like it is stuck in second gear. When I am winding it out I cannot here it shift at all. I located what I think is the adjusting screw for the trans and it is turned all the way in. This should make it shift alot later right? If it is indeed in first gear then if it shifts to second this thing should go about 80mph? I do not think it is in first gear at all. What can I do to check or fix this?

RE: Low torque mammoth?
Sounds like first is locked out or something. I'm not familiar with 2-speeds so don't trust my judgement here.

RE: Low torque mammoth?
That is what I am thinking too but do not know how it could do that. Never messed with a two speed before.

RE: Low torque mammoth?
2 speed mamoth? all the way in should be first only. half way in should be good. al the way out should be 2nd very early. any farther and you'll be looking for the little ball.

RE: Low torque mammoth?
I figured all the way in should get rid of second but I tell you when this thing gets going it hauls ass like it has been in second the whole time. Just slow on take off. I would get eaten up by a walmart r/c car out of a corner.

RE: Low torque mammoth?
it sounds like its stuck in second, that type of 2 speed uses small springs if damaged it can be stuck in either gear. to fix it you need to buy 2 speed repair kit which consist of some springs and a few other things. once the screw is screwed all the way down that spring is pretty much done. the other thing is it could be over geard for the 40 series tires, alot of people have been going with a smaller pinoin for 1st and 2nd .

RE: Low torque mammoth?
Just a quick question jombo how do you know he has 40 series tires do they come stock from the factory? Also has your friend done any mods to it maybe he has a tall spur gear clutch bell combo on it.

RE: Low torque mammoth?
the stock mammoth st comes with 40 series dish wheels so i am assuming he hasent changed them . he also said that the 2 speed screw was all the way down ie broken spring so no tencion on the 2 speed and its always in second just like a clutch bell weaker springs engage the shoes faster and stronger ones engage at a higher rpm. i am only going from a stock truck because there isint enough info to be a modified truck

RE: Low torque mammoth?
i have a mammoth st and i HAD the same problem so i just switched the 2 speed out for a center diff. problem solved.
the reason was a combination of my clutch shoes and springs, my gearing, and how the 2-speed was set. btw you really dont need a 2-speed if you race unless the straights are like 250ft. |
RE: Low torque mammoth?
It is completely stock. I tuned it a little better and got some more power out of it before a pin on one of the front axles came out so I have to wait and see. I did put some smaller tires on it from my mantis truggy and will see once I repair it. There was a new clutch and springs put in it and am thinking the springs are too weak maybe.
