RE: KMP T-6 Texan II Assembly and Flight Video
Earlier this week an usually early snow storm hit the Pacific Northwest but today it was 45 degrees and partly sunny and no snow left on the ground. We may not get another day like this before Spring so I balanced the T-6, taped on the canopy and headed to the field to perform the maiden. The T-6 tracked straight during the takeoff run and felt rock solid and stable in the air. The only issue is as you add power the nose plants itself and it won't rotate unless you pull back on the power. Once it rotates, it flies awesome. There are a couple of different things I can do to solve this.
The Futaba S-Bus system performed flawlessly.
Here'svideo of the 2nd flight. This flight was 5 minutesand was performed at a couple of clicks above half throttle. it used 3000mAh. My batteries have a 6500mAh capacity so I can increase flight time by about 3 more minutes.

I have a couple of more task to do to button up this build.

Thanks,
Jorge

nice Kirk..looked like a good flight and in moves out well
So it sounds like your pretty impressed with the S-Bus system? did you use S-Bus servos or the adaptors?
does the install seem cleaner?
nice work as always

RE: KMP T-6 Texan II Assembly and Flight Video
The canopy has been cut and fitted. I was contemplating what to do about the cockpit area. I don't have the time to make a cockpit so I opted to paint the canopy, it's much too large of an area to leave clear without a cockpit. I cleaned the inside of the canopy really well to remove any release agent and then sprayed it with Alclad Lexan Chrome.Once the chrome dries it needs to be backed with a water based black (I was Model Masters Acrylic). The spinner is made from fiberglass and doesn't have any prop cuts outs so I cut the spinner to fit the prop. I replaced the nose wheel retract unit with a 105 degree rotating unit. Now on the takeoff run the nose gear doesn't dig in and pull back causing the nose to dip like it did with the other retract unit. Things left to do are paint the nose gear strut white, glue the wing tip light covers in place, paint the spinner, and paint and install the exhaust stacks (they came painted silver and I'm going to paint them stainless steel.
I got 3 more flights on the T-6 today. Here are some photos from today. Notice how the chrome canopy picks up the color of the sky. One thing I did notice today (now that the nose isn't dipping on the takeoff run) is that it needs the takeoff flaps for a smooth scale like takeoff. Without the flaps, when it rotates it jumps off of the ground. I think I am going to lower the nose retract unit about a 1/4 inch. This will raise the nose and give the wing a more positive angle of attack on the takeoff run.

RE: KMP T-6 Texan II Assembly and Flight Video
Finally got around to looking at the flight data from last weekend. Unfortunately, I forgot to delete the data from the previous flights so it only recorded half of the 1st flight of the day and none of the other flights. Basically, what the chart shows is for the first 4.5 minutes of the flight 1850 mAh were used (AmpHours), the average current draw was 17.5A (Current), and an average running temperature of 55 degrees (ambient temp was 41 degrees).
I have an APC 4-bladed prop arriving on Friday. If the weather permits, I'll fly the 4-blader this weekend. At a minimum. I'll ground test it.
The motor for my next prop project arrived today

The Chrome canopy was a nice touch, do you mind telling me how you did it and I will let others know.

- [*]Fit the canopy to the fuss.[*]Clean the inside of the canopy to remove the mold release agent. Iused WIndex.[*]Apply1/4 inch fine line tape around the lower edge of the canopy frame, protecting this area from paint and giving a clean surface for applying glue when the canopy gets glued to the fuse.[*]Mask and cover the outside area of the canopy to protect it from paint.[*]Clean the inside of the canopy again, drying it with a lent free cloth.[*]Spray the Alclad IIChrome for Lexan on the inside of the canopy according to the directions on the bottle.[*]When the Chrome has dried, spray a couple of coats of water based black. I used Testors Model Masters acrylic.[*]When the black has dried, remove tape/masking and glue canopy in place.[/list]Kirk

I've been working on the exhaust pipes. They were painted silver and didn't look right. I wet sanded them with 400 grit, completely removing the silver paint. Next they were with an acrylic black and wet sanded with 600 grit (Photo 1). This process was repeated using 800, 1000, 1200, and 1500 grit. Once all of the sanding was completed, tyhe exhaust pipes were painted with Alclad black base coat (Photo 2). As per the instructions, I let the base coat dry over night and then sprayed a couple of light coats of Alcladd II Stainless Steel. Photo 3 shows the results.

Thanks much for sharing, We at KMP do enjoy the creativity modeling skills such as yours add to a scale project. It is scale touches like this that earn the points in scalemaster competitions for ARFs. I personally was present this last year at the Scalemaster nationals to present awards to winners. I was amazed to discover that Arfs from KMP and CMP placed in the competitions because of personal scale touches. Nice exhausts!

RE: KMP T-6 Texan II Assembly and Flight Video
Yesterday, I was able to get out to the field and get some of the first flights of the season. I replaced the 2-bladed prop with a 4-bladed prop. The T-6 isn't as fast with the 4-blader but it has more verticle. I pulled the nose up and it didn't stop climbing until I pulled the throttle and kicked the rudder over. The flight lasted just under 6 minutes and consumed 3800mAh.

I know this thread is 8 months old but thought I'd share my experiences with this kit as well. I had similar problems with my kit as far as two right side exhaust stacks and elevator hinge patterns. My LHS is working the exhaust issue.
