Default Topflite p-47d gold build questions

Hello all, I have a few questions about a p47d build. This is my first attempt at a build, all is going well but am stumped with the ailerons. I can see that they are both built in place and cut away once the wing has been sheeted. The plans say to use the 5/16x5/8 15" balsa for the leading edge. I dont understand how to install this, is it done after the aileron is removed from the wing? Any info is greatly appreciated, and pix are even better. Thanks, Patrick.

You're on the right track, Patrick. Cut the ailerons away from the wing (carefully! LOL) after you've done all the steps up to that point. Then you'll face the leading edges with the 5/16x5/8 balsa. Work slowly and carefully to get a good fit. It's really pretty easy.
Good luck w/ your build!

thanks, figured that was how it went. I have to say the instructions leave a lot to be desired, not to mention the plane built in the manual is completely different. My need info on building the flaps as well seeing how it says to build to the drawing but there isnt one in the plans, lol.

here's a tip keep posting in your first thread (this one) so your questions don't just get lost in all the clutter,if you have several questions just post them here and you will get more affective answers.

Between 8-9? does it fit flush with the grooved strigers? length wise or width wise?

I just figured out that 99% of my issues were from following the p40 manual that came with my kit instead of the p47. The last thing I cant locate is the wing dihedral block. I have the di. braces, and the di. block just cant find where to put it.

Patrick
That'll cause a problem or two every time! Send me a mailimg address. I'll get over to the shop, pull out my construction manual, copy it and mail it to you. It should make your life MUCH easier!

I was able to download it from the top flite website. Fortunately I was smart enought to follow the scale drawings, and not the manual. Think I will be ok- just some of the build order got mixed up.

Did it fly??
well funny you should mention that. as it was taxing to the run way, I throttled up a little, the port side
engine exploded ( I think it was a cox engine), shattered the nacelle, prop went through the fuse and
impacted the starboard nacelle pinning the throttle rod that engine went nuclear and the whole plane
was spinning around in a circle. nobody wanted to go near it. finally after what seemed like 10 minutes,
the gas tank finally broke loose and everything came to a halt. I still have whats left of it (20 years later).
its sitting out at my brothers farm. so no it never flew. but that P-38 wasn't through destroying things yet.
where it was stored, it fell and hit my brothers wildcat on the post side wing.. braking it in two. he was
not impressed!

Dont need a pic, but how about a description of where the block should be, dont see it on the plans, only see the braces

I glued a few thin pieces of hard balsa on the outside faces of the dihedral braces like one would in say a shearweb application. used a few scrap pieces of hardwood rail material to span from W2 through the W1s and to the other W2.. I honestly think it was overkill, but at the time, seemed like a great idea.
