T-6A Texan II 75-91 ARF build suggestions
Yes the field is in great shape, but between traveling for work and the HIGH!!!!! winds I have not gotten her up yet. I hope to have her up in the next week!! It is killing me!!!!!
Well it finally happen, the weather was great and the wind was 7-10 mph straight down the runway! So I finally got the t-6A Texan on her first flight! I flew it with Power 90 motor, 8 cell 4000 mah lipos with a 15x10 prop.
The Texan taxied down the runway for about <metricconverter productid="30 feet">30 feet</metricconverter> and had a very smooth take off! Once I had her up, it just took 1 click on the Aileron and she flew hands off! The stock retracts worked great, smooth and at a nice speed. LOVE the retracts. There no bad flight habits turned great even at ½ throttle.
She had rolled very nicely and flew great inverted!! I was really worried about the landing all winter long, but she landed great!! Floated in very nicely! GREAT landing!!! (all 3 landing were great!) This bird is no flying brick!!! I love it!!
I flew the first Lipo for 5 minutes, and lots of juice left. I flew the next lipo for 6 minutes and once again a great flying plane!!!! The final battery went for 8 minutes and the cell voltage at the end of the flight was 3.75 volts, and this was at about ¾ and full throttle.
Just had a great day of flying and the bird turned lots of heads at the field!! Could not ask for a better day of first flights!!
I have a few pictures that I will have to download and will post in the next day.
Jim.
Iagree the 4000 mah wil give me long enough flight and the 8 cell gives plenty of power.
Iflew with a 15x10 xoar prop, but would like to get a bit more speed out of her, we have a radar gun, i will have to shoot some speeds and she how fast she flies!
Good morning. I have enjoyed your discussions on this airplane. Irecently finished Primary flight training in Pensacola FL in the new T-6B. Ihave been researching different models over the past few months and the Seagull T-6A looks like a nice model. Iwould like to replicate the T-6B in Navy colors to resemble the aircaft I flew for my first solo. How is the covering? I am toying with the idea of pulling off the covering and applying orange monokote. Would you guys suggest this method or do you think LustreKote would be a better option.. Thanks for your help.
I haven't started mine yet, but plan to replicate the T-6B also. I live out on the beach and recently took some reference photos of some T-6Bs parked at PNS. Ieven saw an all-yellow T-6B, reminiscent of the T-34B from the 1950s. The new glass displays (PFD & MFD)should be easy to do. My plan is to remove the blue covering and replace with Ultracote. I have a roll of orange in the shop. The Lustrecote paint would be easier, but I hate to think what it would look like over the blue Ultracote after some time. By the way, I am a convert to Ultracote...MUCH easier to work with than Monokote, but I suppose they each have their high points. My project is a few months away, but I will post some pics when I get started.
Good luck with yours!
Pat
Thanks for the suggestions. I will post photos when Istart mine in a few weeks. How do you plan on powering yours? I just completed a F8F Bearcat .46 Rimfire, 80 amp esc running on a 5s 40c 5000mah lipo. It's way overpowered and I plan on doing the same with this model. I'm thinking a 1.20 Rimfire on 10s.
Jeff, do you think Icould spin a 3 bladed prop running a Power 90 with an 8 cell 4000 mah lipo pack??
I'm sure you could spin a 3 blade prop with that setup. You might have to play around with several pitches to find what works best.
I am running a 15x10 prop on my Texan right now, how would the plane perform if I went to a 16x10 (I think more pull, and more power used, less speed)?? If I go to a 14x10 (More speed, less pull and less power????) Like I said I suck at this prop sizing thing (also only been flying for a year! )
I will give a 14x10 a try, bench test says more RPM, Less Pull and max watts and amps (longer flights??) I will have to try it in the sky
8 cell | 14x10 APCe |
max watts | 868 |
max volt | 29.44 |
max amps | 29.24 |
Pull in lbs and oz | 7 lb 0 oz |
rpm using a dvt | 8550 |
8 cell | 15x10 APCe |
max watts | 1142 |
max volt | 28.97 |
max amps | 39.08 |
Pull in lbs and oz | 8 lb 3 oz |
rpm using a dvt | 8070 |
8 cell | 16x8 Xoar |
max watts | 1320 |
max volt | 28.5 |
max amps | 44.69 |
Pull in lbs and oz | 10 lbs 5 oz |
rpm using a dvt | 8000 |
Bad Day!!
Another Texan bites the dust!! I was out flying at our Airshow and flying my T-6A Texan and had a great flight and i came in for a low pass to drop the retracts and the fly by was perfect!
Took a final lap arond the field and was coming in on final at about 1/4 throttle and into a nice 5 mph wind, and my bird just dropped out of the sky! and did a nose dive into the field! I thought i had low power in my lipos and my esc cut out since I had no throttle or control surfaces. A pretty bad nose dive, took out the nose, and wrecked my lipos (will have to check out the rest of the plane, but the wing is in preetyy good shape and so was the tail
I will post pictures.
But the lipos all cells were at 3.7 vdc each cell, so had lots of power left. I will have to check all the control surfaces and my CCPro BEC and my castle ice 75. and of course the power 90.
But the folks watching me fly could not understand what happen, she was coming in for a landing, and it has a great glide to her.
BUMMER
Looks like time to buy a plane and reuse the wings, and have a spare set just in case
anyone have a spare texan
The plane is a great flier!!
WIll let everyone know what next steps are.
Bob
Can you tell me what retracts (part number) did you put in your bird, and how did you like them? the retract s that came worked ok, but a bit picky. was hoping the ones you used are better.
SInce I have to rebuild, I will have to improve it!!
thanks
Bob

Jim
Well here are a few pictures, Iam getting the ESCreplaced by my local hobby shop, Ispun up the Power 90 today and turned fine, the spinner is ok. Lost the battery pack - damaged, and not worth putting back in a bird or my house - busted lipos = fire
the retracts are damaged, the cowl is shot, a pilot lots his head - grusome!!! the fuse is stress fracture about 2/3 of the way back
The wing is fixable.
Duece Isent you an email, lets chat!!
Here are a few pictures from the pits (no pictures were allowed at the crash site due to the pilot losing is head )
Lucky Istill had my fleet biplane to fly (the red one in the back!! she was the hit of the show!)
Thanks all - Iwill fly agian
