Default ARF BUILDERS ONLY....PLEASE!

Ok you kit bashing ARF builders.........Let's see whatch ya got! This'll be fun.........Please, just friendly banter here.......I'm not looking for arguments about the difference between builders and ARF completers......or assemble'ers.........

Let's just have some fun and show our talents.........I want to see a pic of the original ARF......THEN, your own version in it's completed stage. Also, a brief paragraph about your mods, additions, changes or what ever you did to make it your own Warbird.

Let's keep it light hearted and fun. If you want to show a pic of your family and the dog, I'm ok with that, just so you show a pic of the ARF that you completed yourself with no outside help.......

I'll start it off.............This is the one of the newest and easiest to bash, the Top Flite P-47 bubble version Mighty Thunderbolt. All I did was uncover the front from about the back of the cockpit area and recovered with aluminum Monokote. Went with the Yellow Aircraft Canopy and Frame for some more realism. The one supplied with the kit is rather small if you look at the real bird. This just helps in making the Jug look a little more scale. The pilot is an ACES OF IRON with the lower half of a Barbie doll added also for realism in the cockpit. Some Primer flat black on the top of the fuse and rear of the canopy. Painted the rear of the cowl just to get rid of the rest of the stars. I think she came out ok...........I anxious to fly her. She came in at 23lbs, had to add 5 1/2 ounces to the tail to counter the heavy 4.2 Brison we went with for power. The big 4 blade prop is simply for static, something I made up myself. The weathering is some light work with an airbrush and scotchbrite pads.

I'm going to start one next week. I don't get much time, but you will get some pics. I have seen almost exact what you did with different nose art, no weathering.
I'm planning about the same with invasion stripes and a naked lady on ther nose. I like naked ladies and it ticks of some people that I enjoy tickling off.

Here's a CMP Bf-109 that I'm finishing up. I added a cockpit kit from Ty's Planes and a pilot figure of my own creation. I did some minor corrections of the camo pattern on the wing by generating overspray on the pattern instead of the razor straight lines that the factory painted. I also added some weathering and some different decals.

For the gear, I used E-Flite electric retracts, Lado oleo struts, and Williams Brothers wheels. The engine is an OS200 with a Turbo Header muffler.

Hope it's OK if I share the work of a couple of fellow One Eighth Air Force members. I don't think either of them will mind.

First up, two Hangar 9 Thunderbolts re-finished by Bob Frey, one for himself (Little Chief) and another for OEAF member Kenny Thornton. If I'm not mistaken both of these birds are still covered with iron on plastic, just repainted and with panel lines and rivets added. Bob also opens up the wheel wells to allow for a much larger diameter wheel to be used. Powered by Moki 1.50 and Moki 1.80 respectively.

First, as it comes out of the box.

The re-finished Jugs.

Next up is the ESM P-51B as customized by OEAF member Austin Goodwin. I don't know what all Austin did but I'm fairly certain the airplane was stripped and glassed, surface detail added, and then repainted. Knowing Austin he probably added a full cockpit and other detail goodies as well.

Original

Austin's bird as photographed by Joe Balabon.

Finally, one of my own but far less impressive than those above. This is a Thunder Tiger Sea Fury refinished in a totally spurious scheme just for fun. Wings were glassed, panel lines added, and then repainted.

Original

Mine after the re-finish.

VQ produce a nice performing ARF which makes a good test bed for scale detailing.

After one of those 'she'll be right' incidents at the field I decided, in preparation for finishing the Spit kit build I am doing, that I would strip the covering off the Hurri' and do the full fibreglass, rivet, rib stitching, litho plate, etc, deal to her.

So here are the before and after shots.

OK GUYS!!! This is exactly what I'm talking about...........What fun to see all the boys doing their thing. GOOD, BAD, UGLY OR INDIFFERANT............They are Warbirds and I like'em all!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Terry..........your flight line always shows your talent........

STUKA BARRY........LOL! Your right, I'm not from the TAR HEEL state and I don't understand............Even tho the stock ARF from our friends at Top Flite is a pretty and well done ARF in all ways, It's just about the fun of us Time Challenged Warbird pilots that still try and do somthing that stands out even just a little bit at the Warbird events or at their field on warbird day.........

I LOVE THIS STUFF........KEEP EM COMIN BOYS! BTW, I have built from a kit and will again..........I just thought this would be fun and enlighting and already I think I was right.

I definitely like the Razorback model much better. Great job. I've seen the "Tar Heel Hal" with a DA-85 stuffed in it and it was ballistic.

Barry, yes sir, I did the 85 and she moves out pretty good plus the large prop looks awesome when you see those yellow tips cutting an arc.

The 85 fits nicely in the cowl, only had to have a very small hole to clear the plug cap.

Ron, Yes I flew her at the Rockies this year.

BTW, I'm very familiar with Bob Frey's work, he's a pro and yes does it all, and I've flown with you guys down there. I usually hang out with Shane Willaims when I'm in town, please don't hold that against me. VERY VERY well done on the Sea Fury.........I LIKE!
I don't know Shane so can't hold that against you Ron. Can't be any worse than admitting I hang out with the likes of Bob Frey though so I get where you're coming from! We've probably met but I'm lousy with names, though I'd probably remember your face. If you're down for the 1/8 Air Force event in March be sure to look me up and say hello.

Great thread guys, keep the pics coming.
