My experience with the Vortac bombs and things is not to positive. The exploding bomb would always come apart in flight and spray the bottom of my plane with whatever powder I had in the thing, that of course would be mixed with the goop that came out of the exhaust. The half that did come off in flight is gone forever. Even if it did stay together long enough to drop, if you dropped it 5 feet in front of you it could be lost forever, they have a way of hiding in the grass! I lost the TF drop tanks when the plastic hooks would break after so many flights. In my opinion these hooks should be cut out of aluminum. I can make my own bombs, I'm experimenting with an exploding type. If I make one I'll let you know.

Yellow Aircraft has a comparable mechanism in two sizes. They work well.

Guess I'll give Y/A a try... Does anyone know what scale their options are?

I'm in the 1/8 world right now.

they only have the drop mechs. I already have the fourmost ones and am OK with fabbing them into a mold... I really need the 500lb bombs themselves.
I see myself making them by the time this is done.

I have molded scale bombs for four different scale models used in competition. It really is not that hard. First make a pattern for the body; a lathe helps but it can be done on a drill press. Make two half female mold shells from fiberglass using the techniques you can probably find on RCU. The fins can be thin plywood, plastic, or plastic packaging that you luck into. I cast my first bombs from polyurethane foam. I used "Mountains in a Minute" a two part foam that the model railroad guys use. I have not had good luck with insulating foam--it doesn't react in the closed mold. Make sure you leave a vent hole at the end of the mold for the excess foam to escape. I clamp or bolt the two mold halves together. The down side of this is that the bombs will sometimes break when dropped. To eliminate breakage lay up a fiberglass shell in the female mold--two layers of 2 ounce cloth is enough. Trim the glass and pop the parts loose from the mold. With the fiberglass in the mold put "Mountains in a Minute" in the halves and clamp them together. After it cures you will have two perfectly joined halves of a bomb body. Cut a slot for the latch rail and drill a couple 1/4 inch holes where the screws go and epoxy a short length of dowel stock into the holes. Add your fins and paint. Drop on the bad guys.

Could you give me some rough overall dimensions. tip to tail (fins included) and diameter of it? That'll give me a good idea...

Thanks... and if i can make a mold I'd be up to that... I'd want to spit out a dozen of so anyhow... for when they break after one too many drops

Default vortax bomb

hi
the vortax is 5"5/8 long ,dia is1"1/2, fins are 1"7/8 tip to tip
1/8 of lengt is arming tip[this looks small on my 1/8.7 p38]
the plans from the t.f bearcat which should be 1/7 scale
include drawing of 5oo lb bomb it measures
8"1/4 long ,2"1/4 dia ,fins 2"7/8.these are old plans so there was
some shrinkage,arming tip is 1/4 "
ftiano sold 1/8 scale glass bombs even had the prop driven fuses
in both 500lb and 1000 scale not sure what happened there,
i have a h.l. bomb as well it has the round fin though /british
style
hear theres a web site whith full scale dimensions and a scale
drawing dont remember the exact name though ,it was
weapons and warfare or somthing like that
hope this helps
