I broke down and bought a Xoar 17-8 three blade. Turns 7,250 rpm. Feels like good power. I think this prop will work good and looks scale. I'll post and report flight performance.

Does anyone know why the FW 190's gear is angled in like it is? The Germans didn't do anything without a reason. It seems if the gear went straight down they could have gotten the ground clearance they needed and had slightly shorter gear and therefore stronger.

Part of the reason is because the downlocks work better at that inward rake of the gear then if the struts came down 90 degrees. Its a mechanical advantage for side load forces since they predominently landed on rough grass fields instead of paved runways. If the struts came down 90 degrees, then the downlocks would also need to be longer and more prone to stress failure.
I'm sure there are other reasons as well.

Got about 5 flights with mine these past few weekends. Running Tacon 160 motor on 12s, about 3800 watts according to ICE data log, AUW 13lbs. Didn't even have to deploy flaps to land in our short runway. I've owned many different sizes of FW-190 and this once again proves bigger flies better!

I finally got to fly the FW 190 with the Xoar 17-8 three blade prop. The DLE 30 was turning it 7,500 rpm?? Maybe the cold weather? Anyway it flew fine, plenty of power and looks more scale I think. Here are some pictures of the plane with the 3 blade.

I flew the 190 a couple off weeks ago. It was too windy for me. Made two approaches and went around then bounced once and went around again. Next time I landed. The landing was an "arrival" on the mains. Not really that bad. Both gear folded. The mounts broke. No damage to the struts as there was really not that much force. At least I didn't break my expensive prop. Finally got around to fixing it. removed sheeting from around the gear mounts. Poorly designed and poorly executed. Cut new larger mounting beams, added a short rib, reinforced the other, put gussets every where I could, used plenty of epoxy and resheeted.

Flew today. Not windy. Engine was running great and has more than enough power with the DLE 30 and three blade Xoar 17-8 three blade. Had a good smooth landing so didn't "test" the gear. At 12.5 lbs this plane is light for a warbird and flys great. Mine may be a little heavier now with the new redesigned gear mounts. There are places to skimp on material to keep the plane light but the gear mount is not that place.

RBean, The landing gear in any of the ARFs I've bought in the last year have had serious issues... my new default is to load up the areas with T88 Structural Adheasive. It's an epoxy but it does a real good job soaking into the wood around it. I'm definitely not shy about the amount either...

I ripped the gear out of the wings 3 times on my BH FW190. the last time the left gear went through the top of the wing. My new approach is to "butter" the entire area with the T88 and then mixed an ounce or two with either West Systems 410 (micro filler) or sawdust and load up the leading edge.

I've also switched, quite happily, to Wingspan electric retracts and Robart straight 1/2" struts and 3 1/2 wheels.

Even my "seriously less than perfect" wheels landings work out pretty well.. I love watching the struts soak up the take off and landing roll outs and especially love the staggered retract effect you can setup in the Wingspan retracts!!!

Sparky, tell me about this T88 Structural Adheasive. Where can you get it?

I buy it by the quart from Aircraft Spruce

My mentor turned me on to it.. he uses it to build actual planes people fly in (if he trusts it to keep his butt in the air, i can trust it to keep my plane together)

Ok, good to know where I can get the T88. Flew the FW again and had a less than perfect landing that did "test" the gear. No problems, it held together. Out of town now, can't wait to get home and fly with the weather warmer and the runway mowed.

Black Horse does not make the plane anymore from what I understand. There may be a few retailers somewhere in the world that still have a couple, but will take some searching to find.
Too bad too since the BH 190 flew well and is good for people not used to heavier wingloading.
If you really want a 70" or so FW-190A, ESM makes one and you can get that from ytinternational right there in the UK.

This place in the US has the BH still in stock, but really pricey:

Too bad it is discontinued, its a nice flying airplane because of its light weight. Mine with a DLE 30 weights about 11.5 lbs. Not bad for a 70 wing span warbird. They were however over priced because they sold the plane with what was essentially worthless retracts and gear that most people threw away. Hobby People had it on sale for $100 off so I figured I wasn't paying for the gear. My redesigned gear mounts seem to be holding up ok. About six flights since the repairs and no problems. 50 flights total on the plane. I'm using a Xoar 17-8 three blade prop and this plane still has more than enough power.

It is with a heavy heart that I say "I've sold my BH FW190" for $400. It had an awesome, very reliable DLE20, Wingspan 90degree electric retracts, and robart struts and wheels. There is even a gentlemen who's interested in my spare complete kit for $450. I can't believe I don't have it anymore.

I called the folks in Vietnam and they told me to call the resellers in the UK... they've got parts but they're expensive to get here, etc. I just spoke to a guy yesterday at PVMAC's Big Jolt that got the last ARF from Hobby People... good luck.

Flycatch,

I tried that recently as I wanted to get a new cowl... No such luck. The store manager I spoke to, who also flies at the same field I do, said he can't order the parts any more.

Bummer as I just dorked my wing today...

Thanks guys but ive emailed bh models with no reply from them and the only spare part listed for the model looks to be the cowl. Looks like im going to have to make a plug and pull a new canopy myself. How bloody annoying!

Thought I would let every one know that my BH FW 190 is still flying. It has a DLE 30 which is more than enough power. Spring air retracts with the 74 degree blocks. Over 150 flights on the plane. Light weight at 12.5 lbs, so flies well. Only thing really wrong with it was the weak and poorly designed gear mounts. I've fixed that. Here are some pictures at field. The marketing problems was it was over priced because the retracts that came with it were useless but had to pay for them anyway. If they had eliminated the retracts and lowered the price by $100 it would have been competitive. (also redesign the gear mounts). I may get around to spraying with flat clear to take shine off.

RBean, Regarding flat clear, I have used LustreKote Flat Clear in the past, but not anymore. The planes I have used it on in the last year or two all began discoloring where they were exposed to sunlight. This includes ARFs from H9, WM, and Seagull. Below are a couple of pictures from planes less than a year old. WM T-34, Seagull Zero

And a link to an album of before and after pictures of these planes and others. Appears to be no problem with the coating until a year or two ago.
