I'm starting a Ziroli Stuka build and didn't want to hi-jack the other threads...I will be cutting my own wood. This is my first attempt at doing a big scale bird from scratch...any and all hints ,tips ,modifications, ideas, free stuff, and even criticism would be appreciated...Today is Thursday 3/10/11...I should be getting my plans in today or by Friday...the wood may get in this week, but looking for it early next week...I'm looking for documentation, and good pics to get an idea of a paint scheme. Ive seen most of the posts and pics on the forums, and I will be using ideas from those..anyone who has built on of these and found a better way of easier way let me know, or something you wished you would have tried and didnt.

Ok just got back from a road trip...went to Staples had 2 sheets of the plans copied...$14...well spent, now I can keep the originals intact and not have to cut them up for the saw patterns. Bought a couple pieces of wood...have 2 pieces of 1/4 x 6 x48 popular, will make the wing spars out of that since it not much different than spruce...bought a belt and disk sander (skil brand) to go along with a new band saw...I love it when I actually have a good reason to buy more shop tools. going to try and make a few pieces tonight in the family room as long as the shop vac will work.for a dust collector. Have a couple of books ordered...ready to start getting wood cut...

Having never done a scratch built, I find this very enlightening.
Keep those pictures coming. Especially the "normal/run-of-the-mill" stuff that is simple.
It leads to a much better pictoral understanding of the complicated stuff that often follows the simple.
I think a Stutka is on the list of wanna builds for me somewhere down the road.
Thanks!

Well it is a little overwhelming being that this is my first complete scratch build...there are alot of good forums for some vital information on building this bird...its just finding the right post in the right thread, so many to choose from...This may be a long drawn out thread...not able to purchase everything at one time so I have to wait for some of the pieces to be bought...I'll try to post as much as I can with out trying to over do it...but to me pictures are sometimes better than words...The actual cutting process took a little over a day...most of the time was spent making copies, cutting the patterns out and using a spray glue to paste them onto the wood...as all this was going on I was searching and getting help from several people on these forums on trying to get pictures of the theme I've picked, ( Royal Hungarian Airforce )...Was taking time to hand cut all the pieces worth it instead of buying a short kit...I think but thats just me wanting to say I did it all myself...I guess we'll see if the cutting was the right thing to do when the build actually starts..lol

What are your plans for the landing gear ?
Sierra Giant has a beautiful set for the Stuka. Delivery can be slow. If you plan to use these, I suggest that you order now, so that there's a chance that you have them by the time you need them.

I think I'm going to use the bent wire gears..I have the 1/4" wire anyway and from what I've seen they work so I'm going to try and save a couple hundred bucks...I found the forum with the aluminum tail wheel yoke also...I ordered the aluminum block for $12..just have to cut it out and shape it with a dremel...will use the 5/32 wire nose wheel gear for thr rest of it...thought I'd tap it and use set screws to hold it to the wire...is that how yours is attached? Thanks for the heads up....if you see me doing anything wrong let me know...

It looks like you are doing real well. I don't see a reason that a first time scratch build should shouldn't come out right.
It is just one piece at a time. It appears that you have the skill and patience to do it.
New adventures are fun because they are new and saying that you built it from scratch is a major accomplishment.
I have been lurking a number of build sites as I am just getting back into RC after a number of years out of it.
At best, I put together an ARF, then built a trainer kit and a Hots kit for my son to fly.
He then trained me to fly when he was 12. Now he's 29 andd we started his son.
I just started a Top Flight Giant Corsair kit and it's all new to me. Joined the Corsair brotherhood as well.
I am have a great time getting back into it. I can get and hour here and there to build.
I wish it were more, but some time is better than no time.
I have access to the build threads and even more improtantly some really accomplished "Top Gun" builders who can and will stear me in the right direction whenI get stuck.
This time it's for me. While I have a long way to go with the Corsair, I have a set of Ziroli plans for the Stuka as well.
That is next!
I be lurking your build as you go along.

Lurk all you want and comment all the time... Tom Crump has one of the best build threads on the Stuka...give his a look...I also have a TP Corsair but it just the Gold Edition...its about 60% done...recieved it partially built..have to fix a few things on it but will get it flying sometime...other forums have good build threads also I also have a thread started there http://www.rcscalebuilder.com ... Ziroli 100" Stuka revisited ...I too was away from RC for 15 plus years while my twin sons enjoyed every sport they could play...lol they are now 22 and I'm just a couple of years from retiring...so I have a little extra time, between fishing and camping and honey do's to build a little...I still have alot of gray areas on the build...not sure on the control horns or the control rods....hinges....

The axle ia a bolt. The yoke is tapped on one side to accept it.
Buy your tail wheel before you start. My yoke was enginnered around the tailwheel, to insure a perfect fit.

2 cent opinion... Hope your wiring bending-fu is better than mine for the mains. Used robo-struts and worked out great. Found them used for 100.00. Worth every penny even at 176.00 for new ones.

In my opinion, this is the better of the two threads that I did on my Stuka. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=615484

I think this is the page that has Toms tailwheel...had to do alot of picture sorting to find this....wish there was a way to condense all of the forums into one searchable one....
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showt...615484&page=63
Tom if the plane is near and you can get me the measurements of the tailwheel that would help a bunch....

couldn't you layout the yoke with the front straight edge at the edge of your chunk of aluminum and save yourself all the cutting and smoothing on that edge?
