Byron reduction drive on TF 1/5th P-51 Mustang models
I like to know if anyone on here have used Byron's reduction drive to use scale 4 blade props on TF giant scale 1/5th P-51 models. I'm fixing up my Pica Mustang with front fuselage section from TF 1/5th scale Mustang and want to use reduction drive to swing scale 4 blade prop on it with G45 or G55 engine.

I contemplated this several yrs ago, even asked the question here in rcu. The planes are about the same size but the noses are just different enough. If I were to revisit this , I would graft a Byron front end onto the TF kit. The spinner size is different enough thatthis would be a faster way of getting there. I have both kits and I believe it is doable. There are seeral after markket cowls out there that use the scale size spinner which would also get you 1/2 way thru the conversion. How serious are you in doing this?

Lets put it this about seriousness, front half of TF fuselage is already cut and dry assembled on my Pica fuselage. Not much is there to do more fitting wise as hard work has already been done. All i have to make some adjustments on the forward area of wing saddle and glue both fuses together and the add reinforcement from inside. I don't have a clue where to get frontend from byron fuse, so i have to work with what i have on hand at this time. I also have TF painted cowl that is being used on this conversion.
I don't know if byron spinner with be same diameter for the TF cowl or i will have source out aftermarket 4 blade spinner for this conversion...

The Byron Drive is 5.5", I have a scale Tru Turn Scale P51 spinner and it fitsover the Byron unit perfectly. The Spychella and Tony Howard P51 cowls are the match for this spiner. The TF spinner is I believe 5.25". When my battery charges on my mouse I will be able to load up the pics

My other question is about the support of this drive, does it only bolts on the firewall and it takes all the load/weight n vibrations of the engine and the propeller or is there some type of support structure that is needed to be made that will acts as drive support to take off the weight from the firewall and the drive shaft....

Looks like i'm missing few key parts here to do this conversion!.
Shaft on the engine with belt turning spool on other end.
Both aluminum support in between mounts.
Shroud at the tip of the nose before the prop.
Correct Spinner n off course the 4 blade prop...
Where can i get these parts from?, i'm sure TF cowl can me glued on the firewall n then access panels cut opened to install all this equipment in it. Mind you i would re-inforce TF cowl with CF from inside before mounting this stuff in it. This way it will be stiffer n will be stronger to provide support needed.

Does anyone have spychella e-mail address, I 'am thinking about scaling up my new top-flite P-51 cowl. I did not know tony howard ever finished his cowl for the p-51? Any help would be appreciated/

RE: Byron reduction drive on TF 1/5th P-51 Mustang models
I built a couple Byron P-51's back in the day. The first one was with the Quadra 35 and the last one was with a Mustang 50 motor, the prop drive was used on both. Both airplanes flew OK, they were not overpowered by any means. One issue I had with these was vibration, they would shake themselves to pieces. I ended up getting rid of the prop drive and going with direct drive. They did look cool!

No in that picture that you have of your set up the motor bolts right onto where the four hex head bolts are and you will have a pulley on the motor that lines up with the larger pulley of the prop drive, the one part that your thumb is touching is where the prop drive bolts to the firewall so this set up that you have uses no drive shaft because this is the simplier one to use and not so long like the other pictures of the other model that was posted.

Oh i see, ok i get it. So what maximum size motor can i mount on this mount and where can i get that pully u r talking about that will go on the engine directly....
@ Ram-bro, If TF cowl's lip dia is 1/4" smaller or larger then the backplate of Byron Spinner, i'll be ok with it. I can live with this ever so slight size difference.
