I had a modified Zenoha G20 and Sierra retracts in mine. The plane flew good and moved like a bat outa ****. But the wing structure is really too flimsy for the weight of the G-20. And hitting a gopher hole didn't help any. But now that there are several lighter small cc gassers on the market, I can lighten the plane up abit. I been testing a RCFG 15 cc in a H9 AT-6. Plenty of power, weighs about the same as a .91 4 cyc. So far so good.

An RCFG 15... I'll have to look into that. I've been eye balling the DLE 20. A gogher hole? I can imagine the damage that could do..lol Fireant mounds get me sometimes here. I hate fireants! lol How does the AT-6 fly compared to the Hellcat?

My 100 inch wing span short solent is 8 1/2 pounds with two 3-cell 3200 batteries . While trying to build her that light i must have broken all the sticks at least once and some twice. lol Your rebuild is looking great , you would make a good scratch builder drube . joe

Plane looks great Joe, looks heavier than 8.5 lbs! When I complete my Hellcat I was planning on starting a 1/4 scale Fly Baby build from plans, but I may redo my H9 P-51 first. One day I hope to scratch build but I need to learn how to use the CAD programs..

Thanks

The engine is mounted andthe cowl is fixed! It was really bad! The pics hide alot of bumps, lines and filled cracks. I didn't spend too much time on it because when I go gas i'll use the new one. But for now I can get flying. It does look good from 5 feet away. lol

Iam no good at all on a computer or cad but i was a carpenter for 30 years and can draw by hand and make any thing i set my mind to. The sheating on my seaplane only goes up the side 4 inches and the sheeting is 1/16 the rest of it is 3/16 sticks . The wing has a 3/32 balsa ,yes i said balsa main spar with 1/8 by 1/8 bass strips top and bottom. I chose Ivans plans cause he is the master of light building and once you have built his way, its very hard to build any other. Your plane is looking great and i cant wait to see your maiden drube . When you do get ready to scratch build or even kit build here is a site that i learned alot from. joe http://www.airfieldmodels.com/index.html

Panel line with a fine pen, and weather that thing.. you not only won't see your tiny flaws.. you will be wishing all your stuff looked so good ! I think its a heck of a finish you have going.. keep up the good work !

p.s. panel lines and weathering OVER the insignias and invasion stripes will REALLY add to your finish.

Thanks, By fine pen do you mean a fine tip sharpy? I read some where on here about using fine steel wool to fade paint. I'd love to weather it but don't know where to start.lol
Wold love some help and direction!

Thanks, Alan

There used to be a permanent marker that was called a panel line pen. I think top flite put it out?

As to weathering you can use an airbrush, chalks, some people use the ground carbon from pencils, and rub it in.. Its really more of a diving into the water and learning thing.. there are some great weathering threads on RCU. Personally I like to do the base coat, then panel lines (on metal type planes) then I use some airbrush shading and exhaust and gun burns.. I have used just common colored chalks over that for some more shadowing. lastly I use some white chalks to highlight areas that would be on top reflecting light. I hit it with some flat clear afterwards.. I don't recall if you are running glow fuel or not? if so you need to make sure its a glow fuel proof clear.

A few of my friends that were afraid to try it are now hooked, and every plane they do looks better than the last.. The real advantage is IF you like the tough used look of warbirds..repairs are MUCH easier to hide!

Thanks! I really like the worn looking warbirds! I have read through some of the weathering threads but I see like you, Panel lines are put on after the base coat. Since i'm past that point is it still ok? Do you have any pics of the lines applied after decals and before the clear coat? I'll do more reading this eve when I get home. I think at some point i'll have to invest in a testers airbrush kit.

Thanks again

One thing to keep in mind, you will want your pen drawn lines to dry a few days before clearing..also Don't put on your clear real wet, it can cause the pen ink to run some, and besides a drier rough coat of clear adds a texture that looks right anyhow...

Here are a few pics of a kitbashed 4star 60 wing, its fabric covered and then I painted , and panel lined it..The landing gear was installed in the wing, and the outer panels changed a little, but other than that its a dressed up 4star wing.

Thanks, That looks great! I was just looking at the panel lines on a real Hellcat.. Wow there's alot! lol That's going to take some time! Do you think it would look bad if I just did the weathering and not the panel lines?

Everyone has their own style and technique.. there is no right and wrong..

The drawing out of the panel lines can be a bit of work, i do think it really makes the difference. I don't get to worried about if they are all exactly right I have some plastic tracing sheets I bought at a art store, I don't know the correct name for them... I think they are for architecture drawing, they have different sizes of squares, circles, and other shapes. It makes it much easier to do rounded corners and access panels. ..but heck, you only see them on the ground up close..not when it flies by.

Unless you have better eyes than me !
