Since the other forums on this are mostly talk, I figured I'd post a pic of the Sierras going in. I'll have them the way I like here soon. You can see the just of what I did. The ply in this is really strange and it almost melted of sorts when I cut into it. I'll build my own formers to support these out of 1/8 real ply and support the originals on both sides. The wheels are 5-1/4 Glennis. I'd like to keep as much of the original well if possible. More cutting to come.

Ok boys i guess its time for the build i got one in today. I will be on the sidelines for this one for a little while i have to finish my monster wulf first. I learned to never start multiple projects.

Which kit is that one?

Looks like the TF will be a nice canvas. I hate that they elected to glue the control surfaces on. [:'(]. However, I like the fact that the decals aren't applied.

mmm that is exactly how an ARF of this nature should be treated, like a nice canvas.

Those surfaces should be able to be removed with a little effort. Probably only hot glue anyway. Perhaps dribble a little acetone into the joint to see if that will soften it enough to then be able to pull it out.

Bestine solvent will dissolve the hot melt glue type adhesive used.

I still have a wing to do. I'll post it along side the finished one later. Still some cleaning up to do. Sierras gear are a better choice if you're willing to do the dirty work in getting them in. I think in the long run you'll be happier with the setup.

Where would I get some of this. Anything to make the build easier.

This solvent should be at good paint stores and even Home Depot if I remember right. Its not harsh but it dissolves the adhesion of hot glue very well.

No residue as far as I remember but you can come back with acetone on a rag or q-tip.

You mean glassing as in if the hot melt is on a fiberglass surface and you remove it right?
As I understood it the question was what will help dissolve hot melt glue to remove the hinges in wood. On a fiberglass surface you can use acetone on a rag to clean it off with no side effect. I have wiped down an entire compsite ARF jet with acetone to repaint it and lighten it.

lol.. Thanks. You know me and my FW190's. The retract mounts in my opinion are fare from adequate. The material used is some sort of layered ply which is really easy to break up. Really soft stuff and I wouldn't use it in a build of mine. It looks like it'll survive some harsh landings but how many is unknown. There wasn't any metal, other then the blind nuts.

The other retract installation went like a charm. Everything was a drop in with having the new rib formers. No guessing of any kind.

I hear you. I placed my 1/5th scale Platt 190 on hold again so I could get some of the dirty work out of the way on this one. My Platts fuse is ready to glass but the wing is another issue...

I need to learn to do that. The poor thing has watched me build eight planes on the sidelines. Well' at least she's almost done. I'm building a sliding canopy for her now. Once that's done, I'll glass her and finalize the wing. I guess the delay has been due to already having one in the fleet.

Flight reports? Anyone? Lots of chatter in this forum. I have not gone through all the posts but not much on flight reports. I hope Darryll at Sierra is making retract units for the Topflite FW-190. Robarts are not my cup of tea and that comment is being quite reserved as to my true opinion of Robart comparred to Sierra gear.

The idea of stripping all the ''monocrap'' covering off and finishing with glass cloth and resin is also well worth the time and effort. My last giant TF P-51 was monocote. What a dissapointment on a single hot summer day. I spent more time ironing my plane than my white shirts for business.

Too bad they can't make a hybrid between ''monocrap'' and roofing shingles. At least roofing shingles lay down flat in the hot sun.

Your disinclination for Topflite is quite apparent...

The "Smith's" on here don't contravene in respects of material used or what they have chosen in lieu of.. They hasten without pessimism.

Great role models for all to ensue....

I have to say I prefer glassing to covering with monokote or any other film for that matter. At least with glass, you know you will have something special when you are done. Worth the effort.

LOL. Brings to rise my favorite Yoda-ism that holds so true with modeling...."TRY NOT...DO...or DO NOT....there is NO try...there is ONLY Do"
