Absolutely HD.

A tail heavy large scale warbird will crash, ive never seen a incorrectly CG'ed big warbird go home in the same condition it came to the field.

For a newby its worth mentioning if your new to warbirds take a moment to remember what they were made for and fly em accordingly.

They dont grovel around at 1/8-1/4 throttle without incident sooner or later. Ive seen so many beautiful planes destroyed by people trying to fly them like trainers. They are fast agile aircraft and will not bite you if you keep that throttle in the upper half of the stick.

Also some warbirds tend to land at higher speeds than other aircraft but a P-47 with full flaps down are easily landed.

The balance point on most models is measured as a percentage of the chord. I checked one of my Top Flite P-47's and it balances at 30 percent of the chord measured at the fuselage. 28 to 32 percent is an average range. I prefer the more rearward point which calls for less elevator throw. As you move the balance point forward you will need more throw. Forward balance requires a higher landing speed as you need the air flowing over the elevator to hold the nose up to flair. Rearward requires less throw as the landing speeds are slower. Any extremes on balance choice can be bad. I've seen nose-heavy planes plow into the runway because the elevator couldn't lift the nose. If you balance around 20 percent, this is a likely event. Balanced at 40 percent, the pitch stability will be compromised and loss of control is likely.

Avoid meaningless adages when it is time to balance your plane. Get out your calculator and do the math, just like the engineers that designed the plane did!

You will like your P-47. They are the best mannered of the fighter planes....they were designed to be a stable, good handling weapons platform that translate into a like-handling model.

I set my aero-bats a bit tail heavy. More fun that way, but I would prefer to have this plane right on the money or a tad nose heavy for the first few flights before I make any changes.
We have a field north of Two Rivers (Asphalt Runway) on Hillcrest road and I fly with a Club in Hilbert where we have over 900' of smooth grass runway. Which is where I will fly it first. I prefer grass over asphalt.

My 70" Ziroli is getting closer to finish. Star and bars are Major Decals flat coated and the rest are all painted from vinyl stencils I make. My next bird will have ALL painted markings.

We marked the wing at 28-32% and it balances between the two points without adding any additional weight. Am I lucky or what?

Had a dead stick with my TF P47 w/DLE55.When I flipped the prop there was almost no compression.After removing the muffler you could see a piece of metal missing on the top of the piston.I sent it back,It's still under warranty.Had about 15hours on it.

Did you get a chance to inspect any further? Pull the plug? I was wondering if there were any clues? Also, what percentage oil did you use?

Kelley Models,

The T.F. Giant Scale P-47 shows 1/2 inch for up elevator on low rates. That's what I use all the time except for taxi when I flip to high rates to keep the tail planted. A lot of people fly with too much elevator throw and when the plane is pitch sensitive they move the balance forward rather than reducing the throws.

Lifer,

Thank you. A friend of mine had a Y.A. P-47 and he told me too, that it requires very little elevator for normal flight, and high rates for landing and take off. We'll make some adjustments before I fly it. This is the first plane I've built that I've been so nervous about flying it. I've built a lot of Extra's, Cap's, etc. and never was worried about the outcome as much as this one.

I did pull the plug and all looked good. I'm running Klotz synthetic 40-1

I don't use high rates for landing and takeoff....low rates only. High rate for taxi.

Hi There - I guess I'm a late addition to the party, but better later than never possibly? Just purchased the Top Flight 85" P-47 kit with a full compliment of complete Robart P-47 Retracts to build my first large P-47 (going with a G-62 for power) off of RC Universe. I also have the .60 size TF P-47 ARF kit off of the Tower scratch 'n dent heap and am doing some scale, mods (New Scratch Stab and Tail/rudder with scale hinge-points ala Ziroli design style). I sent you an email earlier before realizing this all started a few years ago. So I'm looking to add my P-47's to the ever growing Warbird fleet (TP 85" P-51 & Meister Corsair), and am looking forward to being a part of the P-47 Brotherhood.

Will add my 2 pennies hear I only use a hi rate on the elevator as the low rate setting lets me fly at a more scale like appearance, and with full flaps I use about 6 % down elevaror programed in, this lets me stay at 3 to 4 clicks above idle with no bolning on final till I cross the end on field line

My friend Tom maidened my rejuvenated Hangar 9 P-47 150.
G62 with a Beila 20-10 4 blade. Videos are very good. But the flights were very successful!

U going to the electrons flyin Saturday or taking your Bird to the
War Birds and Classic In St Charles Ill. Friday looks good but
Winds to 20 mph from the NE on Saturday, Rain Sunday.
