The Hanger 9 P 51 D flies NOTHING like the Top Flite Mustang. It is a better airframe in every respect except for the wing tube fit on SOME of the delivered models. Both of mine needed surgery on the wing tubes. My brother's plane had the same issue but Horizon sent him a good center section. You can force the H 9 Mustang to stall, but it is a gentle break that is easy to recover from. To get mine to stall I slow it down, hold up elevator while reducing power, when it is almost stopped, it will drop the left wing tip and begin to turn. Recovery is instant as soon as the up elevator is let go. On a landing approach stall (Top Flite Mustangs are famous for their roll over and dive in) the H 9 plane will lower its nose and descend until power is added, then I can continue the approach to landing. The H 9 Mustang does not have an accelerated stall out of a high speed turn like the TF Mustang does. Just pull it as hard as you want until you are tired of that. I only use the recommended control surface travel for High rate, low rate is not needed. Another thing it does that the TF plane can't touch is the dead stick glide, be careful, it will glide right past the runway.

Hi guys,
Seems like this is where all the P-51 fundi gathers. I am flying a CARF P-51 and would like to check where others have the C of G on this model. I am also interested in hearing what flap settings you are using.

Hello friends, put off getting a P-51 since everyone has one. A fine gentle old friend use to pester the heck out of me to get one and when he passed I decided to get a TF and make it a tribute to him. Good friend did the building for me (I'm a rubbish builder) and "Art's Revenge" was born. Truly a fine bird.

I have a question gentleman.......
I also have many Mustangs. My latest project is the ESM Miss America 71" WS
Even though I am not pleased with this model I still think if may be a good flyier.
My question is I went to balance it and it as asking for 22 ounces of nose weight.
I have never had a model ask for that much weight before.
Has anyone else built the ESM P51 D model??? And what amount of weight did they use to balance it??
The directions ask for a 137MM CG point. After much reading it is too far back. I am trying to balance it at 128MM
ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT

I have a few EMS models as well and I have had the same issues with having to add weight. Everyone I have built needs weight. Use their CG point and add enough weight to make it just a tad nose heavy. Warbirds like to be a tad nose heavy

I was in the hobby shop one day about three years ago, and a modeler came in and was looking for special nut. The hobby shop did not have it, I overheard the conversation and mentioned that I did have one at home.
We got talking and he knew who I was. He followed me home and I gave him the special nut he was needing.
His name is Alan Rockey. Just about the nicest person one could ever meet.
Then he mentions to me that he is the corporate pilot for a major company and that one of the aircraft he flies for them is a P-51 named "Daddy's Girl" that won the Oshkosh Air Show the last year for best restoration. Done in one of the highest scoring schemes of WWII
And he says in a casual way: "Would you like to go for a ride in it?"
Of course I say yes, but take the offer with a grain of salt. I appreciate his offer but just don't expect this to happen.
About a month later I get a call form him and he is telling me if I want to go for a ride in a P-51, today is a good day.
"Holy Cow" I am calling a couple of my friends to meet me at his hanger . I give one of them a still camera and the other a movie camera. Sure want to capture this.
I arrive at the hanger and he gives us a complete walk-a-round, showing us the gun bays and everything. Then he tows it out, we get in it, and I am really going for a ride in a P-51 Mustang. He has me hooked up to a head set.
The take off alone was really exciting. What power.
We then fly out and over Fulsom Lake which is east of Sacramento.
When we get over the lake he is asking me if I think I can handle aileron rolls. This is the thrill of a lifetime, and I am going for anything rather it make me sick or not.
So here we are, slow rolls, speed rolls, 4 point rolls, and then various loops too. And then he ask me if I think I can handle some combat maneuvers? Now I will admit, they were a little tough on me, but I did not get sick.
After flying around for a while it was time to head back to the hanger.
Now their hanger is on the Air Force base.
When we got close to the airfield, he is asking the tower for permission to do a low pass. OK !!!!!
Next thing I know we are in a dive, he has pushed the throttle forward, and I swear, when he pulls out of the dive we go the length of the runway and if the wheels were down, we would have been rolling on them.
And then we are landing.
This is one of those things that just doesn't happen to very many of us aviation buffs. I know there are places where one can pay thousands of dollars to go for a ride in one. And I wonder if even that would be a ride like this.
I'll tell you, it is one of the most special days I have ever had. I will never forget it.
Alan and I are friends to this day. And I will never forget him either.

OH God,how I would LOVE to go up in one.Thats my bucket list the whole bucket.I sure do envy you not jealous just envy.I was standing on the wing of one and the pilot said 3500.00 for an hour.Too much for me.Oh boy.I have three TF stangs and I fly them as often as I can.I just like to look at them during the winter months.WOW that sure is a beautiful mustang!!!!

I got to fly in, and pilot The Collings Foundation's P51-C 'BettyJane' in March of 2015. Definitely kicked MY bucket across the street. Doing 300 knots at low altitude is a thrill that is hard to describe. I think I sprained a face muscle from grinning all through the flight and on through the next week. I have built and flown 3 Top Flite Mustangs in the BettyJane's colors and squadron markings and I am currently building the fourth 'BettyJane', a Jerry Bates design with a fiber glass fuse molded by Vic Catalasan, powered with a new DA 60 engine. Just riding in this plane is thrill enough, but when the pilot allowed me to fly maneuvers also, I got into 'fighter pilot's heaven', as described by recently deceased WWII Mustang pilot Don Lopez in his book by that name.

hey guys!!!! I haven't posted in a long long long time, and I'm sorry considering I started this thread lol. So just to keep you guys updated, I bought a TF 60 sized P51 for 200 bucks rtf, just had a crappy motor so I bought a die 20 for it. I am also looking for a tf giant p51 arf if anyone has one, but I'm in canada lol.

#24 Leroy Gardner, Rest In Peace - I’m sorry to report he passed away last month. I had the privilege of owning and flying his pride and joy TF GS Kit Built P-51D. It was his first large warbird build with no previous experience but lots of research. He did an incredible job and he had asked me if I would pilot the maiden for him because he wanted to work up to learning how to fly warbirds. Everyone in the club with some experience told him he was reaching way beyond his level both in building and flying. He researched the kit, the flaws, the fixes, and the materials to finish and paint it. Plus, because he was a craftsman, he added a cool engine hatch and cooling splitter in the cowl. Leroy fully documented the build and made a binder of the various stages of the build. That binder was the main reason why I bought the plane because he clearly built it right. I was very impressed to say the least.
He offered the plane to me after some time as he was finishing it up. For some reason he decided to sell it but in hind sight I wonder if he knew he wouldn’t have enough time to learn to fly it and figured it would be better to let someone else enjoy it.
It was a gorgeous Mustang and I flew it for one season and fully enjoyed it. I left it mostly the way he built it but improved a couple servos, elevator control rods, added a two stage spring set to the Robostruts, and replaced the plastic Dubro wheels with Aerotec aluminum scale wheels.
Leroy came to the field to watch the first flights of the plane he built. He was a little emotional, excited and very proud to see it go. He thanked me for taking care of it and flying it like it was supposed to be flown, like a war bird.
I regret I sold the plane to my friend who wanted to fly it in the scale masters qualifying round the next season. I only sold it because he was going to compete in the scale event and I could tell he could handle the plane as we had flown warbirds together so it felt ok. He loved the plane too and practiced a lot to perfect his routine for the contest coming up. One day entered a split S maneuver lost control and destroyed the plane. He was so upset. I was upset too but what can you say right?
I kept the tail section not only because of how Leroy relocated the stab to the proper location but also because the finish is very nice. I’ll pattern the update of the TF GS ARF to Leroy’s tail section later on.
Thats the story of Leroy Gardner’s P-51D Mustang. I’m happy that I had the honor of presenting him with flying his creation so he could have the satisfaction and experience. I’m sorry, Leroy, that I let it out of my hands, that will bother me forever, but I will always remember you and your plane.

Sorry to hear of Leroy Gardner's passing. I was building a TF 1/5 Scale P-51 at the same time he was posting is building. I refereed many times to his build thread. He was an amazing craftsman.
