JAYNC: Just wait until you try to put the bolts holding the engine standoffs inside the fuselage. Better look for a child with small hands!

Hi Eddie,

Thank you!!

I am using flight Power 6s Packs to make 12s. Last time I checked I believe the amp draw was about 86 amps. Pull and speed is good, vertical is ok, not quite as much as a 55cc gasser but not bad.

I added about 10oz to mine after the first flight and it flies very smooth now. Elevator was just too sensitive before. It balanced right in the middle of the CG range before adding the weight and it moved the CG forward about 3/8".

I've got one. It is perfect except for a little RC 56 residue where it was glued to the airframe. You'll be gluing it down the same place anyway so isn't an issue. $10.00 plus postage. Don

So that 10ozs and the factory weights, wow! There must be about 3+ pounds total. Oh well it must be balanced!

Making progress on mine, got all the wing servos installed

How much throw did it have and did you consider reducing the throw rather than adding more weight?

I would try that before adding more weight.

I fly all my top flite warbirds nose heavy, balance it to where the nose is pointed down a good 15 degrees from recommended balance point. Thats when they lock in the groove and fly on rails.

Yes I played with the elevator throws. The airplane just flew like it was tail heavy and the weight smoothed it right out. This airplane is still a floater on landing and could carry a lot more weight if need be. Don

If it flies good its, then it must be right and a little nose heavy is good. How did you decide that 10 oz was needed. I'm asking because i will be balancing mine down the road. You said that it moved the CG 3/8 forward?

its really kind of up to your taste but if you balance it on the recommended balance point and the nose is pointing down a good bit then it will fly great. On my p47 that I just put the dle85 in I balanced it to where it was almost falling off the stand nose heavy and it flies so smooth you wouldnt believe it. When I land and the mains touch its almost the tires have velcro on them. When you balance a top flite warbird level at the recommended point they are always hunting around and flying loose. When they are nose heavy they lock in and fly on rails. Set the cg nose heavy to your taste and if it flies loose add a little more lead until it locks in.

Another tip I found from a fellow warbird pilot at the club is when landing with flaps as soon as your mains touch retract the flaps and it will drop the tail right down due to loss of lift. Works really good, just takes a little practice to get your fingers in the right sequence.

I'm estimating that it was around 10oz but it did move the CG forward about 3/8". JAYNC has a good description on how it flew before I put the weight in. I also set up my control throws so the airplane flies scalelike. The real airplane did not have the roll rate or elevator response of a Pitts. A lot of warbirds I see are obviously set up with way too sensitive controls. I also have been building, restoring and flying full scale for the last 40years and owned a SNJ (T-6) for 8 years and have flown a P-51, P-40 and Spitfire so I set up my warbird models to fly scale like. I have 4 TF giant ARFS and i balanced all as specified . They all fly very well with no bad habits. It's always good to get other experiences.

Thanks for all comments.

JAYNC,
I have Sierra retracts and wheels like you. I'm not sure if the gear doors will work with these struts.Have you looked at yours?

All of mine are balanced at the most rearward recommended point and I use less than 75% of the low rate recommended. Smooth and graceful, and no nose-overs.

I looked at them but haven't started to build any of it yet. I'm sure there is a way to make the doors work , just have to get creative for the lower mount. I took the doors off of my P-47 because on a grass field they seem to always have issues from time to time.

I use this technique flying full size taildraggers and it works quite well especially on 3 pointers or tail low wheel landings. Settles right on the mains, stops any tire oscillation (light on the gear) that could lead to a small bounce or rise after touchdown. Though some don't need it, and it depends on the RC plane, it works for me too on most RC warbirds.
