Hello everyone,
A few months ago some of you answered some questions I had regarding the noise levels of the Kolm etc. The advice was greatly appreciated! Long story short, I ended up pulling the trigger on a beautiful Carf p51 painted with British markings. I love it! I'd really like to place an order for the Kolm il150 3 cylinder next, however some people have me concerned about the strength of the overall structure of the plane. Aside from using the installation kit, has anyone strengthened the wings, aft portion of the fuselage, horizontal stabs etc? Is this definintely needed? Also, how far back behind the firewall are everyone's "reinforcements" extending? Is all the weight technically still hanging on the firewall mostly? Any help is greatly appreciated, as I'd like to take the safest course of action while still incorporating the 3 cylinder version. Carf has suggested going with their new racing version since it's completely reinforced. I'd hate to part ways with the mustang I just bought, but maybe that's best? Anyhow, any help is greatly appreciated !

Good morning Ryan!
So:
there are already some carf p51 out with the IL155 and IL150. so we know, the plane can handle the weight. my kit was a very old one, so i decided to put a thin layer of glass on the nose edge of wings and stabs. in you case thats not possible, because it´s already painted, right ?
so... if the servos are stron engough and als links are builded stiff and strong, it will work. what i would try is, bring some epoxy with glass bubbles inside of the nose edges. you can use the servo ports for that, at the inner side you can drill a hole to bring it in. mix it, make it hot and inject it. should be easy.
all the weight isn´t on the firewall. a did a thick layer of carbon fiber in the front. the engine is mounted on the firewall and also it gets a front support. i will add some fotos of that if needed. for sure there are already some online here.
if you have a builded mustang, there is no reason for me to buy a new kit.

Thanks Tom!
Well it sounds like this is going to work after all. Any pictures would be greatly appreciated. I've been reading through this forum and taking notes, but I'll take all the pics I can get. Below is a picture of the mustang, its painted but I'll definitely do some supporting, and touch it up as I go.
Do you have a specific distributer to recommend for the install kit, or is there only one version available right now? I'm not sure I saw it on the vogelsang site. A few more questions: I noticed you re using the long version of the KOLM, is this working well for you? Is It a trade off of cg movement versus additional weight? How do I know which version CARF p51 I have(not sure the builder knows, I'll contact him).
I really appreciate the help and patience. This is going to be a father/son project. We plan on eventually attending some meets with his meister p47 and this p51. We re really looking forward to it!
Thanks again!

Hi Ryan, love the scheme! You need to add a ton of weight to the tail. I filled the elevator tube with lead, and put the batteries right in front of the tailwheel retract. I don't think you need to reinforce anything but the front end. I put 6oz bidi carbon fiber from the firewall(which has to be moved back significantly, to the leading edge of the wing. You definitely want the long nose version for the twin, can't comment on the triple... I saw the triple in person last year, I know Thomas is keen on it, no way I would put that motor in this plane. Its just too big and heavy. Make sure you get the electric start, it is a must have! Love to see some close up pics of your Mustang.
Pretty sure I put pics of everything earlier in this thread on the reinforcements. The mounting kit I got was for the long nose, and I got the short nose motor.... (still bitter because I made it very clear I wanted the motor "for the CARF mustang") the mounting kit was near worthless this way, just served as templates. With the long nose it would be much easier.

I like the camo scheme and it'll certainly stand out from the typical TF or H9 invasion stripe scheme that's so common. I am on the fence about doing something similar myself based on a Canadian scheme. I also like the wing tanks and they don't look like the one Dean sold through aero-accessories. Any idea where they came from?

Hey guys,
I appreciate all the input! I should have some info regarding the wing tanks by Tomorrow. As far as the weight of the Kolm 150 3 cylinder, I did quite a bit of research regarding different ways to support the aircraft at the AMA Expo East yesterday. There was a gentleman selling this new "3rd generation" fusing CA type glue which sounds very promising in increasing structure strength by 30%. This, along with carbon fiber supports may do the trick!? Either way, CARF is very confident in how strong the new Reno racing version is. I understand the " sandwich " composite may be different, but it looks identical. Also the wings are shorter so the load is a lot closer to the wing tube itself, decreasing the amount of "flex"? Going to continue researching before I commit to chopping this firewall out, however I think it's possible to achieve the quality of this new Reno racing version!
In reference to the starter, Is there a reason people swear by it? Is the compression/possible kickback that bad that it's essential? My goal is the 3 cylinder with the least amount of weight. Once again, this is a learning experience for me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Ryan, the starter is for ease of use, and cool factor! It is so nice to just flip the momentary switch and watch it go. I wish I could have it for all my planes... It will add weight, but you can put the battery for it in the back. If you do the three cylinder, you will need to put all the batteries in the tail and still add a considerable amount of lead. My plane weighted 50 pounds the first time I flew it. I knocked the tail off it in a crash, rebuilt it and believe it or not, shed two pounds. With the tail off, I moved as much as I could aft and it made a big difference.

The original builder said the drop tank accessories are from CARF.

don't know what a 135 240 is but Thomas Gass told me he flies the 135 engine with a 750 ml tank and has plenty left over so I'd guess it's likely going to work for you. That's the size I'm going to use as well for the 135.
I think it averages about 75ml per minute at full throttle if you have it leaned.

Hello everyone,
Very interesting threads, thanks,
Can anybody give a feedback for the best propeller (2 blade and 4 blade) to use with the couple Kolm IL155v3 / CARF Mustang ??
I've the similar Flying Legend Large P51 (Ripmax) and Kolm 155, not fly yet, good quality too.
Thanks,
Laurent
