As I understand from this thread, front support is not necessary (Tom's words I think). That said, I am going to make supports for the cowling/side panels, and in that process, I will probably make front end supports for the engine while I am at it

I needed to mount the engine, so I can begin the baffling job/construction (which I must admit, is giving me "headache", as I have never done an inline engine before). I will copy fellow modellers solutions, based on pictures in this thread. There is not much room between the engine and the cowling at certain spots. I will make the left/right side panels of the cowling removable for easier access/maintainance.
I look forward on how you will do this. Having owned a few 1/5 Spits and losing the most recent because of engine overheating I am very interested in the ducting (one of my favourite aircraft). Your inlet air looks to be quite large. Is this based on any previous experience?
All my previous models where fuelled with methanol and engine heating was never a problem. the last one was gasoline and the engine cooling was a nightmare for me.

This is the Spitfire of my friend Tom Bogner. He supported the engine in the front because he mounted the engine On rubber-locks.

Cooling is the same System as always.

By the Way. The best is when You halfen the cowl. You can remove the Lower side and arrive the hole engine without removing prop or Spinner.

@youngguy, the air intake is not my work, it is something the previous owner did (before he lost interest in the project), and I will modify it to my preference later.

@lxtrim, I have mounted without rubber-locks. Are you saying that I will be fine this way, without front support? I am asking even though you have mentioned this before, since you have experience. Or in other words; if you were to mount a Kolm engine tomorrow, how you do it, based on your knowledge?

Kim.
My il135 was mounted in spitfire for One Season without Rubber And without front Support.
Now problem, if your Firewall is stable enough!
I would do it again this Way.

Thanks for quick response lxtrim. I have probably "overdone" my new firewall, and the fuselage in the firewall area and some 20cm back into the fuselage. Better to overdo this area, and extra weight is no issue with the Carf Spitfire

Kim, Looks great so far. Interested to see how you baffle it. I'm wondering how much of a hindrance putting a mesh screen over the cutout will affect airflow? I just hate seeing smiley face under the spinner on a spitfire!

Hey Fellas, I have been following this thread for a few nights. I too have decided to build the Mustang with the Kolm 135. This is great having so many experienced guys in one place on this mission.
Dr Scoles I am very impressed with your work so far. I can't wait to see your beauty out of the paint shop.

I built the 50cc Aeroworks mustang but installed a DA 85 and a solo prop 4 blade. We also fiber glassed the airframe and used flite metal. I am thinking of using flite metal on this bird as well. Actually I was going to buy a BVM jet but after hearing the Kolm 135 I am just craving that sound. Plus I love the Mustang so it all works for me.

You guys have done some great jobs on these birds and I really appreciate the collective skills you all bring to the table. I am getting hungry for more info Dr. Need those pics. lol

Back on the Spitfire/Kolm 135 after vacation, family and work... I have finally started on the cooling construction)

Here is a photo (dry fit) of the progress so far. Lots more to do, but I can imagine the end result now. Getting a snug fit between the cowling and the cooling plates, are really time consuming, wtih multiple cowling on/off repetitions. I have also installed two Futaba temp sensors (telemetry).

Since this thread is getting some life, I will share some pics of my progress…. My buddy painted the plane with PPG liquid metal, it looks awesome. Depending on how you clear and weather it, it looks like metal… ;-) I have four pages of little tiny nomenclature stickers to put on, then it has to be cleared, then I can do final assembly. I love the distressed look that CARF or fiber classics or whoever did it put into the plane. Looks like the real thing!

Kim, how are you going to secure the temp sensors to the cylinder heads? I was thinking about using RTV silicone. I read somewhere that it can be done that way, but open to better ideas.

Not much. I paint about as well as my buddy fixes teeth…. I do know you have to paint the plane black, then clear, then you spray the stuff super thin. After that, you put a binder over the top, then its durable. Do your decals and weathering, then clear. I think you may put the binder on again after the black/clear..can't remember. I took a video of him doing it, I'll try to post.

I did the Kolm like I did my Moki.... Locking wire (if thats what it's called) from Todd at dreamworksrc. Put the temp sensor between the fins on the sylinder, and wrap one turn around it with locking wire (or similar). Works great, and easy (no mess) to remove if necessary.

Your Mustang looks great btw!

Two more pics, this thing is going to look awesome. I cut out a few hundred little decals today while I was watching football. Kids have been taking it to me lately, not sure how long it will take to get all the finish work done. There's no more fabrication, just gotta do the stickers then reinstall everything.

Here are some photos....pleeeease share your thoughts if there is something to adjust. I have NOT yet installed a small inlet for the "warm" side, as I am uncertain whether it is neccessary or not? If so... is it better to make the small inlet at the front (next to the big inlet), and route the air to the "warm" side, or just make a scoop on the "warm" side (side panel), to give the carburators some cool air?

Photos in this order: Air inlet - "cold" side - "warm" side - Air outlet seen from the engine - Air outlet seen from underside cowling.
