Default engine for topflite 1/5 P-51

I got my father-in-law the kit for fathers day and am helping him gather the other things he will need to complete it. Motor recs in the instructions are for 41-60 size gas engine. There are lots of threads on this but I have not been able to find a clear answer. What engine/muffler will fit with out too much modification of the cowl? We want it to have good power but still look good. thanks for the help!

Anything from a DLE 55 and a G62 to DLE85. Read all the treads they are worth your while.

I would recomend the DLE 55 RA rear carb , rear exhaust fits in the cowl but will need nose weight to ballance the plane . A good option is the G62 with a JTec wrap around pitts muffler that is custom made for the TF P51 engine weighs more than the DLE and will ballance out with less added weight especially if its an spring start , magneto engine . Using a light engine is not really benificial unless it has much more power than a G62 . The DA50 will fly it nicely , but again you will need to add a substantial amount of weight to the nose to balance the plane . For speed it is hard to beat a G62 with a T6 racing prop from APC.

If it's the ARF then it will balance fine with the DLE55 RA. The tail on the ARF is very light. Just make sure your batteries are as far forward as possible. If it's the kit version then it will likely need nose weight. How much depends on how careful you are with keeping the tail as light as possible.

Here's the ARF with a DLE55 RA. Make sure you use a baffle for cooling with DLE55RA. Use the Bennet muffler not the stock muffler. Changed the scheme from Big Beautiful Doll to Buzzin Cuzzin. Just seen too many Big Beautiful Dolls.

And the kit version with a DA50 and Slimline muffler.

Both fly great.

I've have been running a DLE55 RA for 3 years now without any baffling and never have had a heat issue. At least 200 flights. I guess it might be the cowl your using. I am using Leo Spychalla cowl with the 5 1/2 " spinner.

I didn't experience any overheating with the DLE55RA myself but read some guys were having problems. I did the baffle on the DLE55RA just as a precaution. It was pretty easy to put in. I did not use a baffle on the DA50 and I've had plenty of flights without any problems.
